DOE MY GOAT. I really love the ways you made the world your own here. The world of the mad god being all twisted and abstract was so fun to see, and really adds to the feeling of Xiba's homeland being replaced by something that should not be. Having Raygun start off jovial but reveal his true colors as fearing the supernatural was a really fun way to play with his character while also showing the wrath that Xiba brings to this twisted world. And I really love that Raygun's new form is not only more monstrous, but also more congruent. Where before he was a human with monster parts, now he is a single entire monster, the parts blended together to create a new singular whole. I'm dying to learn more about Xiba and her story, and to find out both who she is as a person and as a conduit for the magic within her!
WOW this comic is visually stunning! Your linework combined with the colors looks absolutely fantastic here. I’m a fan of the green and gold limited color palette too. Raygun’s new design and scar is really cool; admittedly I do wish we got a much larger or clearer panel of his new form! The panel at the bottom of page 9 is just a little too small for me to make out all of the cool details.
Xiba’s powers are extremely interesting to me. Admittedly I had to go re-read her bio to get the full impression of what she had done to Raygun. The idea that he’s mutating into more of a monster because SHE sees him as monstruous is fascinating. This character is perfectly built and tailored for a magical scar tournament like this one. I’m so very curious what kind of transformations she might inflict on future victims.
Your color palette for this was so beautiful, and I’m in awe of your layouts. You never waste space, and I particularly love how, for the majority of the comic, I never forgot that we were in a cave. Even the smallest hints of the cave walls did so much for the atmosphere.
THE SCAR WAS CRAZY!! Xiba’s dancing and magic look amazing and her anguish at the end has me so hyped to see what happens next Also, her little lamb… I’m fascinated
BIG OL EYES EMOJI. Loving the little bits of Xiba's backstory we get here, and I'm so fascinated to see where she goes from here. Also the backgrounds throughout the comic are tasty as hell. Those mines look so cool! And Ilove the little details you added on the pickaxes, to make them look that much more special and not just your bog-standard pickaxe!
At first I thought the scar was gonna just be changing the color of Raygun's horn, so imagine my surprise at the reveal of the actual scar. I went full-on Surprised Pikachu. it's so cool!! and feels like a really poignant escalation for Raygun's story. He started off Normal, and through the years he's added more and more supernatural bits until I think he could barely be considered human anymore--and this is just that last final step. And through it all, he still cursed the supernatural, the very thing he had already become, but now he's put in a position where he can no longer deny that fact.
DOE! You are insane! I continue to be in awe of your work! I'm not even sure what else to say, everything about this is kickass. I hope in the next rounds we get to see more of xiba's goat and maybe learn more details of her past
Ok, I know that I already screamed in your DMs a bit about this already, but AAAAAA!!! This was such a good entry! I'll never not be obsessed with your color and texture work. The scar that you went with is metal as hell, too. (XIBA! I SEE YOUR EXPRESSION WHEN HE SAYS SORRY! XIBA GIRLIE!!!)
This is a super interesting take on Jade town as well. It really makes me want to see Mythra and Xiba interact sometime. Would Xiba scorn Mythra as the mad god that has scarred her home so deeply? Or would she see her as a child, gifted (or perhaps cursed) with an immense power built to protect such a fragile and hurt core?
What an incredible first showing for Xiba. She's POWERFUL. She's TERRIFYING. And as always, the art is FANTASTIC. I really enjoy her characterization, this is such a cool intro for a badass character! You cooked, and you knocked it out of the park, Doe!
