Orca: Love how crafty Karaga is in this! Her using a billboard to help visualize her thinking is such a goofy visual gag that I can't help but love it, lol.
Red: Love how creative the arcade framing for this battle is! It works really well with how bold and graphic your art style is, helping bring that sort of "cheap homemade zine made by a chill guy" feel to it.
That was such a charming comic, I loved the character select screen and the sudden change in style after the game started!!
The whole comic was very Red coded. Absolutely loved it!
@karaga
The gradient map did wonders for your comic! Love the lighting effects too. Also, what a cute way to defeat somadis here lol. I wasn't expecting this solution.
Welcome and congrats on a full color comic comeback! I think you have a great thing going with your monster drawing, it’s nice seeing how much expression you can add to them. One can tell that’s one of the parts you enjoyed the most while making this comic. Going forward I would love to see you give that personality to more of the backgrounds (you actually did a great job with environmental character with that think emoji billboard, more fun stuff like that please). I hope you stick with comics past this battle, you have great potential
@ Red
Seeing you back in the saddle like this blasted me back to nostalgia town to the comic battling days of yore, and the explosive switch to the “in-game graphics” as the “FIGHT!” text flew up literally had me mouthing ‘woah’ as I read. This was so much fun and your play with black and white is literally inspiring, you absolutely still got it
Coming back to add that I'm blown away by the detail in the panels that are introducing each fighter. It really sells how powerful each of them is, and you did a great job of making them look as big as they really are! The use of environmental buffs and debuffs to each of the fighters was such a fun way to approach this fight, and I feel like it's very on-theme for a kaiju battle. Hope you and your kiddo are feeling better and I can't wait for more Somadis content!
This was cute! The expressions really sold it for me. I think the transition between pages 4 and 5 was a little bit confusing, because there was no indication of buildings being anywhere near the fight and then suddenly Karaga was slithering between some buildings. It made sense by the end, but I think having a visible coastline with buildings on it would have been helpful. I really liked the way Karaga managed to escape a situation where she was outmatched power-wise, and thought the overall story was really cute. Without any words, I got a feel for the kind of creature Karaga is and her motivations, and other than that one bit of confusion getting to page 5 I could tell everything that was going on, which is a feat when it comes to silent comics! Great job on your first comic for a while, and win or lose I hope we get to see more from you!!!
Red, the art is just so cute here. The staticy gray scale reminds me of an old CRT monitor set to channel 3 so you can plug in your game system. the karaga intro screen is particularly gorge. I also like the pose where she grabs the stage change crystal. the setting of a stage changing video game was very creative; it's a subtle way to introduce new members to the vibe of the site while also hypeing people who still love old void. I also like the post of Somadis crashing through the air to deliver a mega punch.
my only negative would be that in making the characters exist inside a game, it makes them seem less real, in a meta way. But the game aesthetic also plays off nostalgia drive, so it's a double edged sword.
thanks for setting this all up for us, can't wait for the DDR tournament!
Orca, I Really love the art direction on this work. The panels have good layout and the line art is nice and bold. So I had trouble following the action, anyway. I'm not sure where Somadis appeared from in the ocean, though the reveal looks super cool. Then after the tsunami, Karaga wakes up in a cityscape. Did she get washed up onto land? I needed to see the city in the far-ground to know how far out to sea they were I think.
I love the shadow plot. It was fun to introduce it by Karaga being scared of her own shadow. I think the correct story beat would have been to make Somadis also be started by a shadow, then try to fight it or flee from it. Somadis playing with the shadow is cute, but is a story conclusion that isn't hinted at by the prior vibes.
I love the color choices. I didn't even realize it was a limited pallet until the end page, where the sun rises. so much of the story vibe is carried just by your artwork and that's nice. Hope we get to see more comics from you soon!
Had to read this really quick before bed! I'll vote on it tomorrow when I have time for both comics. I thought this was really cute and am absolutely taking notes on your spot blacks 👀📝 the rendering on both characters was absolutely stellar and delicious to look at! Red art is always such a treat 🩷
Super fun read! I love the arcade setting; brilliant way to put the two on equal footing, and I can really see it gave you the freedom to go over-the-top with the fight. The cameos from other kaiju on the character select screen are also a great touch. The fight had so much action and weight to it; some of those panels looked straight out of a manga. The commentary over the game also made it feel like an event similar to a sports match. Very glad to have had you as my first opponent!
Now this is a webcomic, it has those charming lineless backgrouns and solid linework, and just like the style this story was silly and cozy.
You could push a bit more with the paneling, just to make the story pop, not realy to enhance the acton, but the story itself, play around with the compsotion and the paneling. Great little story.
Lovely Textrues! they look so dirty, makes the whole comic have that tiny bit of edge, despite the silly ending. Good use of light and dark, letting the silhouettes do the talking.
My only critique is the bluf effect, since everything else looks so solid, except for the blur in those two panels, makes them a bit out of place. Honestly just a nitpick, this is really good stuff!
This was a really cute and funny read, it looks really nice! I will echo the advice that storyboarding really helps when having to do comics on a short timeframe. The gradient map looks nice and allows contrast, I'm interested in seeing more comics from you!
This was such a fun comic! I love the spot blacks and whatever you used to make the texture so gritty looking, it turned out really well! I also like that you framed it as a fighting game, that's a neat way to have approached the tournament!
Your use of contrast between the bright and darkened parts helps filtering the page composition so well, they feel nice on the eyes. I'm not much familiar with scrolling types, but this feels great reading through it!
This is my favorite perspective, I guess you can call it? Where us the reader is reading it as some sort of game, such a clever concept, i do hope you continue this, very, very enjoyable to read!
Im so impressed with this Orca, I loved the colors and how you've made the story comical. One thing I worry about with comics is like, lineart being thin, thick, etc, but you've made it so well in your style it's comforting. The colors I love a lot about this too, just so pretty and calming. I want to see more comics from you, keep up the great work!!
Omg I loved this! I can’t get over how much I like your art style. And your expressions are so good. The story was so cute, you definitely nailed how Karaga has probably 4000x more brain cells than Somadis lol
Reading your description, I just wanna say first of all, your method of doing things a page at a time is how I used to make comics, but it's absolutely worth planning things out and storyboarding a bit beforehand if you can, it helps a lot. With that out of the way, this was a very cute comic, especially for an event with a kaiju focus, but Somadis is a surprisingly fitting opponent for that particular writing style, so I think this was a very fortunate match up for you. My only real holdup is I'm not really sure how we got from N ocean encounter to being right in the middle of the city. It feels like I missed something

I REALLY LOVE when stuff get videogamey! Awesome rendering and art Red.
Great stuff! I really liked the  billboard that acted like a reaction for Karaga!

This was so much fun to read, the lighting, the "defeat", the silly emoticon being a sign in the city to make a funni. Absolutely love this!
AWWW MY GIRL CAMEOD! This was incredible, Red! Loved every second of it! That hatching/grayscale and texture was PHENOMENAL!

I love this fighting arcade type battle you’ve got going it’s awesome
Cute story
That is so cute. Karaga taught Somadis to have its own fun!
Love the coloring composition, they feel soothing like the night
