You both have visibly improved with each round and it's great to see!
Fred: Your pixel animation skills keep getting better with each issue and I wonder if your true plan was to practice for making a new game! This one was easy to read off the back, thanks for the update on the UI! The last kill was very well executed but it all ends so abruptly, without even a victory line from Joan. If the backfire was meant to be a punchline for something set up, I'm afraid I missed it.
Franken: I'm gonna get the crit part out of the way fast cause I wanna get to page 3; It's okay to have a monochrome color palette of course, but when some figures have different shades for darker parts of them like hair, and others are just linework with shadows, it becomes noticeable and can come off as uncolored/unfinished work. If this was intentional it's something to consider for future comics to be more selective about when you do/don't want to cut shades out. Okay now to page 3: This is one of the best uses of an action scene in a tall scroll comic on the site. The quickness evokes a tension similar the final showdown in Kill Bill Vol 2, where every single move is a life or death decision. The ferocity is felt and is tinged with the tragedy you wanted when combined with the lines. Best of all, it is easy to read and follow without any use of panels. This is one for people to study.
Y'all are cream of the crop just like the other semifinalists, great job making it this far
Fred: That last animation was so fluid and impactful! I can't even begin to imagine what making a sprite comic must be like, it looks really intense to make! I really liked the last line Scav said about leaving the apartment. It was surprisingly sad and ominous. The ending felt a little sudden, but the killer animation was super cool to see.
Frankentoon: Hot damn, this is a pretty comic! I love how much you say with the character's expressions. The silent panels working super well to establish Joan and Scav's relationship without spelling it out for us. The set up is great too, like these two people who feel alone in the world find each other, just to have to kill each other.
Great work all around, these were a joy to read!
yes fred. that's how sprite comics work XD
in regards to your earlier inquiry if i would read a whole sprite comic with animation: yeah probably . they're basically nostalgic for the 2000's now. i was shopping for vintage clothing and a shirt from 2000 (y2k) was there. 🙃
oh, also: I second what Cy said about wanting a reaction from Joan about Scav's misfire.
Fred-
The animation was insane! Loved the way Scav's braid flows with her movements. The dialogue says a lot about the character's relationship. Very bittersweet and brutal! Really good eye for detail, specially with the little nod at the static in the TV. Animation is hard enough already, the fact that you had such a small amount of time to make this is incredibly impressive
Franken-
Goddamn I think this is your strongest round yet. The gradients and color palettes in each page are gorgeous! The pacing and the way we can see how they got close from start to finish is both sweet and incredibly sad. The ending got me bad, it's a very bitter end; I think I'm not the only one who was rooting for Scav to catch a break just got her to end up heart broken. I will always be impressed with the quality and story you can cook up in such a short deadline
Amazing round to both!
Really interesting seeing both sides have the characters become friends, then have to kill each other. Rip :(
Fred - I loved Scav’s sprite and the animation for the two-handed gun shot! The banter at the beginning also felt very natural and casual, really reflected the nature of both of these characters as killers, since they so easily accepted the fight. I wish I’d seen JOAN’s reaction after Scav misfired though.
Franken - Love the colours here! The muted blues on page 2 were a great contrast to the vivid colours on page 3, orange was also a really cool choice for the blood and that heart grabbing shot was tastyy. I also really like the way you drew Scav’s braids, they have a real weight to them. The text still feels a bit cramped imo, but the flow is much better than the previous round!
FREDDDD I loved this sm!!
I absolutely adored the dialog between the two of them and the implications of Joan also working for Helix! They'd work so well into it!! Not to mention the animations and going the extra mile to include Scavs chair, some walking animations, and even weapon swaps! I feel downright spoiled, and the justice yall did to her design blew me away!
I love these two so bad, fighting yall has been my highlight of this tourney ;o;
