O.O woot!!!! craptastic art aside (this is not my worst battle, i'd personally rate this as the third worst... second being the first colab battle with kura, the first and most worst, a level i will never let myself come close to sinking to again, would be my battle with paige. had she actually turned in, she would have wiped the floor with me... hehe memories. but enough of that, on word), this battle was a success.
not the best success, but it seems that i touched someone with my work, and kura too. this gives me a new boost in confidence as i'm finishing up on the current work...
as for part three, i won't have kevin start it till after part two is posted... just to garner some excitement overall... and this whole this is only a prelude to the next thing i and my team are brewing... :3
thanks rabbit. and thanks again mokuu.
Okay, let's get this out of the way: the art was pathetic. To give a full-on critique of the artwork would be pointless, as you have both done much better than this and you know it. I realize you were both crunched, but seriously, Slade, is that a gray magic marker?? Yech. :P
Despite that, I found this to be a very enjoyable and entertaining read. :D
In Slade's side, we see Kale as a capable leader-type figure (I don't know if she's the ACTUAL leader of this \"team\" you've got assembled here) who is very strong in spite of difficult situations. Also, we see her closeness to Veronica Nightingale in the way she only lowers her guard in front of her. Kale and Veronica share a rather interesting relationship, as Veronica seems hardly the type to make any real, close friends. You made the characters very full and realized in a few short pages. In a nutshell, you made me CARE about the characters.
In Kura's side, we see things beginning to climax. After years of biding her time, Veronica is finally making a motion to get rid of the threat that has pretty much encompassed every aspect of her life. It looks like we're going to see BIG changes in her life, and M&J very likely will never be the same. Will she be able to stop the evil professor in time? And if she does, what will come of the lovable-yet-psychotic murderess Satin, who is pretty much just a child who would be without a \"mother?\" As you can probably tell by this cheesy monologue (you have to read it aloud and use your \"announcer voice!\" 8D), I am absolutely tingling with excitement. I can't wait to see what you do next!
So yeah, guys. You could've done better, but you could've done worse.
Slade13 *thumbs up* Go for pro.
KuraX: you pulled these pages off in 2 days, THATS speed, enough speed for a speed deathmatch where you cant get slown down with sections and tag teaming plots. Your name means Turtle X. Turtle to the XTREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEME. Faster than the average turtle maybe even a super turtle. All this to say, nicknames dont mean shit lol you'll get good results at high speed if you want it badly enough. You're Kura X, the X makes it all special, now go kick asses, do better art and let the show continue. Whatever you do, never rely solely on plot, think eyecandy too. People wont buy your mangas if you dont give them eye candies.
dude. i dont know what speed your talking about when you say i have speed.\" Kura\" stands for turtle, the speed at i draw at. I'll admit i was kinda bored with the section i got, but im not complaining...just as long as the storyline keeps going.
thanks mokuu... i'll admit that your comments are aggravating, but that's okay, it's way helpful too. :3 thanks for reminding me and setting me straight... the last few months have been a blur with all that been going on, and i needed a straightening out. next round will be better.
round three will be awesome. you here that graph, we are going to pull clean up duty, and it time to make it big... :D
Well Kura, i love the no surrender approach but whats up tough? you had 4 weeks in total, imagine that, with the speed you have, you could have finished that entry 2 days after recieving it then refining it with the remaining 3 weeks. And as for the backgrounds, i had to say it but cheat then, get some references from your favorite comics and try to integrate them to your scene. Ok referencing aint a cheat, but it will keep you on on track with your deadlines and even the pros do it. As for motivation, well marinate in your storyline, thumbnail sketch the shit out of it until you pick up your burning pencil and attack that canvas! Youve got way more fire than this.
Okay, but really not worth the arrangements that kept this battle at the top of the battles list for a month. Nothing much happened, but you've both got your reasons for rushing this one so I'll leave it at that.
Let's do better on the next round, team.
try fat tipped markers for quick toning, Tria, chartpacks, prismacolo, you got alot of choice. Also, you fell in the most dangerous trap of all \" It looked better when i was doing it\", it always does, we all like our work to a point where it'd blind us from our mistakes. A thing to try might be looking at a reversed/flipped version of it or maybe putting it up against one of your favorite professional comic, no deviant art work but printed and sold comic books then looking back at your work and asking yourself whats missing. It pushes you to be more critical about your work and gives you a few passes to make material look a bit more finished.
as far as line weights were concerned, i was working with some new pens... looked better when i was doing it... but i guess it did work as well as i though... sorry about the tones... that was a total rush job... had a lot of projects, more then i though. next one up should be much better.
I... might sound like a dick but both of these entries didn't appeal to me one bit.
Slade13: The lines were awful and broken. There were no attempt at line weight, some of your shots even reversed the line weight theory which makes it look even more odd. The random toning seriously didn't help as it didn't look uniform at all. The lighting was extremely odd as some panels had it, the next panels missed some and it picks up the next page then disappears. Its very inconsistent and breaks the comic on its own. Either keep it or leave it or find a way to make it work with wanted ambiances. I dig your paneling and layout, simple and clean, very well organized .
KuraX: Broken lines, it feels as if your pens were drying out or you tried to ink at light speed with microns. The backgrounds are really throwing me off as in page 1, the scene fades away for no reason, page 2, only a table is visible, page 3, appear and disappear ..etc But you did a great job on the BGs in the pictures shown, why didn't you put as much quality in the other ones? Clean layout tough.
Im pretty sure there are cheats to help you make them look more finished ex \" Clean colors\" can possibly compensate for missing backgrounds, line weight is another trick to add more impact to a picture without taking alot of time, minimal lighting etc. Or at least a hook frame to get the reader's eye appealed in order for him to continue reading your comic.
nice to see some comics from you slade. you had a nice flow in your pages that were real pleasing to my eyes.
and kura, nice to see you handling this kind of comic aswell. serious business!! heh..
Hey, when I am a real ass on blogs I can leave 50 comments in the first hour to start with if I am not stoped in that time period.
But anyway, your 5 pages were interesting with the oppoent's although I have no clue what are the vote percentages on this battle so far since they appear to be blind at this time period.
before you say \"I have time anyday\" tell me your schedule because it is an ass lugging my carcus over to your \"quarters\" not ready to go due to this or that. And I gurentee you will hear me less often being an ass about it.
update: didn't feel like killing myself with trying to get into kom. and i'm not sure i can pull of that pulpo entry. don't feel good enough yet. galvo: if you're reading this, i'm still working on that beetle corps idea, just i'm going to do like you suggested and turn it into something a bit longer then an anthology entry.
anyhoo, good news is i finally own a scanner! i'm on a stable computer system! ...but. between the renovations (which ended just last week) and some restructuring of this horizon event, i'm behind... so i asked for an extension. if i don't get it, that's fine. i will be turning in something no matter what, and it will be better then my last battle with kura, that is a promise. but with an extension, i can do a much better job.
well, either i'll see you guys in six, or in 13. either way, it'll be great! till next...
i'm in the same boat, working on bbs, a possible pulpo (not sure if i'm up to snuf to pull that one off, but you never know) this battle, 'part three', and i'm hoping to get into the kom... it's not impossible... i'll just be drawing practically 24/7... hehehe. which is what i like...
this is actually supposted to be a battle between 'gundream's' kale (the cat girl with the gun) and veronica... but in my rush out the door to work, i forgot that there was more then one kale on this site...
this is part rematch (i so failed kura last time, but computer problems are fixed finally, and i should have the bb submited in the next two days) and part set up for some major stuff i'm planning with my team...
what 'team' you may ask... :3 you'll find out in do time...
i sent a pm to toast about the mix up, hopefully will be fixed soon.
sorry for the confusion... totally my fault. (note to self, include links to all characters for requests for special battles no matter whether they are well known or not.)
