Heimie: Man, Suit is a genuinely creepy character, and (with the exception of the rape scene, which was maybe a bit over-long) your half was better paced and outright scarier. Your style, with its heavy, scratchy inks, fits Suit perfectly.
Angieness: I liked how you two decided to work off of the same set-up and dialogue for the first half of the fight and then diverge from there, and your entry was clearly the stronger of the two artistically. Your layouts, angles and general atmosphere were spot-on.
Goddamn, either that boy keeps the viagra bottle filled or he *really* likes tigers.
First of all I'd like to congratulate angie, though that's probably the wrong word, on having the cajones to go ahead with this.
It's kind of weird, even though both fighters had so many pages it didn't feel like much happened. Maybe it was because of the size of some pages or the telling of the same story twice, I don't know. Either way, a little more divergence might have helped. I know it's not controllable but I wish I would have read Hiemie's second since he reveals Angie's Friend's fate a little earlier. That said, the art worked on both sides but Angie's just got more experience. Hiemie's work is, like someone said, the appropriately scratchy style of a serial killer's journal, but I'd still like to see some more excercise in proportional continuity (Especially with some charachter's heads) and anatomical foreshortening. I'm hesitant to say you should be more realistic or more cartoony, you're finding your own thing so there's not much I can say.
I'll give Hiemie props for atmospheric touches, with the writing on the wall and that a ball gag is just scarier than a cloth one and so on, but I'm giving a slight edge to angie for the general art skills. Thinner lines on her part might have let the painterly shades of grey stand out better, but that's just me. Also storywise, Angie's already starting to deal with the rammifications of this, so she kind of edges out the total score. (Though I still like suit's last little quip it's still kind of a throwaway to cap a strip with events that I'm sure will figure into his life in later battles.)
This. This is what shows off the abilities of those in Void. That was fantastic. I was disturbed by suit. Someone mentioned it already, but iin regards to Hiemie, it definitely gave off a JHM feel, without being a clone. Gave me the willies.
Angieness, well, I cannot say much more than yours was a 100% professional feel. From the layout, the shading, the atmosphere. Gah, jusy amazing.
Both of you, congrats. It sounds cheesy, but even the 'loser' in this match should not be considered so. Man, I wish there was more!
Hiemie: I lol'ed during the rape scene in yours XD I think it was because of all the sound effects and bazillion clocks. Still very awesome, Suit is so captivating and believable..which makes him veeery scary. I liked how he played off the 'helping a girl who's drank too much' twice.
Angie: Wow, that rape scene was really believable! Especially with the different shots and angles. The story flowed really well from panel to panel, and I loved the atmosphere.
Both comics scared me : D and the characters are really believable and well-developed. Really good job guys!
I'm happy to finally see this battle up and running. I was almost let down when I didn't see this up immediately after 777 though... I've just been waiting SO LONG for this dagsgadgka1!
Heemeemoomoomee: I think your style suits Suit (AHHAHAHAH cleverest little chap I am) very, VERY well. Artistically, it gives me the sense of a madman's scribbles n' doodles in his highschool notebook about his fantasies and plans for murder, and that by itself was rather creepy indeedly. The character came out outstanding, and the choice for words in his dialogs were just adorably perfect. I'm really happy to see him living up to what I expected, and being even better than what I hoped. He's just...I'm in love<3 Sorry...I have nothing to crit, though. I think everything went well.
Angie: Yours were awesome, too. Personally, I think your style enhanced the mood of dread and creepiness because of the obviously dark settings you've given in the comic. My favorite part has to be when she sees the corpse hanging there with her guts spilling out, and there's that shadow that hang over the body a bit that made me feel as if I can feel how dreaded Angie was feeling. Also, the thing about me is, I am the kind of person who is absolutely grossed out at the idea of sex and horrified to any scenes relating to rape, and you did a fine job making me feel that way through giving a flashback of her abused past, connecting it to what's been done to her by Suit.
I think both of you did a fantastic. Fantastic job. I want to see more of this happening...I just love dark, creepy tales. Please keep them coming!
Angie - This has to be one of your greatest achievements when it comes to sequential work. The whole premise gave me a shiver down my spine and the pacing and angie's P.O.V was excellently placed. Your anatomy work on humans have also grown by a huge amount and you captured Suit's persona so well. I'm really proud of you woman <3
Hiemie - Hats off goes to you as well my good man. You've proven to me that Suit is no doubt the scariest mother fucker in VOID. I think after reading this comic, I am not going to believe anyone else can light a candle to him. The dialogue chosen, the Mr Bungle reference, and the pacing were anything but boring.
All together you both did a fine job keeping continuity with your script. It was truly interesting to see angie and suit's P.O.V's in each other's comics.
Funny thing is...I haven't voted yet. Im going to have a hell of a time doing so when I get around to it.
While we did the same story I honestly felt we both made the story our own in our own ways even with the different openings, flashbacks, and endings. It was something we were worried about doing because we knew a few people would see it as an art contest which it wasn't meant to be that way. Hiemie and I's styles are so drastically different it's very difficult to make an art contest out of it.
Thanks a lot for the comments everyone, I was very nervous about disappointing everyone so it makes me very happy to see that people enjoyed both our sides!
I was really pumped when I read Suit's story, but when I got into Angie's and found out both of you started off with the same script, I was kind of disappointed (even with the extended endings). Maybe it's just me. Both of your art cast the story in two different ways, but the overall story still just makes me feel like it's a comparison of art skills rather than story telling.
Hiemie, that was some creepy shit. But overall, I think the way your style suited the story better.
Angie, very nice, very dramatic. Your art cast the story in a completely different manner than Hiemies.
Overall, I'm giving it to Hiemie.
Good match, worth the wait :O
Talk about a nice read!
I liked both stories pretty much, it's creepy and dark, and yet something really appealing, as it's a forgotten genre around here. Plus, it totally introduces the reader to Suit's universe (ahah first time I saw his avatar I thought he was smiling. maybe he is). I felt that Hiemie's part, though, was more sick, as it had a tense (yet foggy, intimidating) feeling, rather than a dark one presented in Angie's, also, maybe it's because the stories are alike, but in Angie version I didn't get the creepy feeling in my belly, while Hiemie's had. Maybe it was the euphemic rape scene, or the hammer thing.
Artwise, they are both aces, I felt, though, that Hiemie pushed excessively in the hatchings in the beggining (it took some time to understand the way Suit captured Angela).
A creepy read. Creepy is good.
Wow... Angie... just... Wow.
Hiemie - Good battle mate, definetely played well on Suit's extreme creepyness, you really brought forward his sick twisted mind. On its own its a great comic, though it pales when you compare to angie's, great stuff nonetheless.
Angie - You've set a new bar for me Angie O,o a high up one. Regardless of the amazing art and perfect use of grayscale for the atmosphere, and great lighting at several points. The way you brought forward the story is amazing, not a dull moment. And even though your end was clearly centered on Angie, unlike Hiemie's you managed to convey a lot about your opponent. Amazing stuff, really....
wow...
And here I was starting to grow impatient...You guys made it well worth the wait!
Hiemie: God, Suit is one creepy bastard. He's like every serial killer i've ever seen rolled into one, some weird lovechild or Gein and Dahmer. Every panel you drew him in made me dread for Angie's safety even more *I know, i'm a loser*. Your art gave off the effect of one of those B-List horror flicks--not the bad kind but the horror cult kind. It was gritty, unrefined and totally perfect for this match.
Angie: You made this p h e n e m o m e n a l. You put a lot a lot a lot of effort into this and it clearly shows. Your grayscaling set the perfect mood for this and I like the use of black filler behind panels, it made things really dramatic. I'm glad you took the time to do a little bit of research because without even that small little detail in the disembowelment coulda thrown things off. All in all it was quite lovely and effective, I coulda waited another week for this and been just as satisfied.
You guys did great, a perfect way to start my morning X3
I don't usually post on aftermatches but man...
Angie I've never been a fan of your work, but after this battle pshh... You got me. Nice ambiance and all. Very beautiful and even though the battle demanded the gore, you did that smoothly. Awesomes from me.
And grats for both artists on the battle planing. Turned out awesome. And even more grats for not starting or going the whole battle using the \"opponent's point of view\" crap. It's too much cliche'd and is not as rich as ppl think. You both were gold, grats.
nice work. you guys must have worked pretty close. the script lines up fairly well, while each of you make it your own. an awesome use of the 'scar' match set.
though i do have to say... i wasn't as disturbed as i was hoping to be. *shrugs* maybe i'm just a sick cookie. :p
I am speechless- I can't decide whos I like better!
You both did a wonderful job, and I am proud of you both for working on your weaknesses! This was a largely anticipated battle and I am extreamly satisfied. The mood was PERFECT in both and despite the rape and gore- it was done professionally.
I seriously have nothing to say because the stories and the work put into this speak for themselves.
AWESOME JOB TO THE BOTH OF YOU!!!!
EASILY EASILY EASILY EASILY WORTH THE WAIT.
Amazing job, both of you, this blew me away.
Just about the best battle I've seen since my tenure in Void (though not very long)
Completed today and emailed to Wei. I had to finish today since I'm working the next few days and I'm unsure when I would be able to work on it/email it to Wei so better safe than sorry. It's as complete as it will get and I'm fairly happy with how it came out, I hope you guys enjoy it!
But... I can't wait another four weeks D: DOUBLE SCAR MATCH CONFUSES ME. How do they get decided? By the winner or they just take 'em? OH WELL WHO CARES I just wanna see how this pans out.
This is going to be a great battle, scares make you look hard. Good luck to you both this battle should be pretty good to me, who knows other then the people who drow it....
Jesus...Y'all best make this some epic shit. I'm a little curious as to how the scars are decided, though...Like, winner chooses? They take the scars the other made?
...Such an awesome way to start Suit's career. XD
You're both getting scars? lol Do a beyond battle then... x_X i thought scar matches were to try and get you to strive to be better so your char DIDN'T get scarred xD haha Ho-well! I hope things go well and I'll be looking out for the fight!
