Thanks to everyone who voted and especially to people who put in a few words. I want to explain that recently I've been having a lot of fun exploring watercolors and I wanted to do this comic in watercolors. But I would say my attempts only half worked out. There's only a few panels I'm pleased with and others I wish I had an erase button for. So I was only planning to color the first two pages but I couldn't finish even that much.
But anyways I'll keep experimenting in the future. I got to try out a lot of news things and I'm already thinking of things to try out. So thanks again to dotorii. I loved that last page especially. Fight in my place!
thank you all for the really good critiques & nice words! i think i know what to work on for the next round now! tysm again William for the sweet pages!
@dotoriii: That was such a fun comic! You've got so much personality in your writing and characters! Your coloring is really fun, too! I want more! Just work on cleaning up your work and refining it, and make sure to give your backgrounds some more love! Treat them like they're characters just as much as the actual characters in the comic!
@William_Duel: WAIT, YOU'RE IN THE INVITATIONAL!?!?!? I didn't realize you'd managed to kill off all of your characters lol. I have to say I'm impressed by your lettering! It looks very neat and I love the style of it. Unfortunately, you fell into the same trap that you've fallen into before, which is not finishing your comic in time. You do seem to be making progress, though! At least you got the full story and most of the inks done, which is awesome! I don't know if it's just better time management, or cutting down your story, or if you're a perfectionist like me and get stuck on details instead of moving on, but keep working on it and keep coming back! The mere fact that you haven't given up the fight is inspiring, and I hope we get to see more of your work!
@dotoriii - I loved this comic! The coloring, especially! And the paneling! It fits the mood perfectly! (Also so many cameos! XD) It was a really fun read and the characters were pretty great! Great job!
@William_Duel - Honestly, your story had me pretty intrigued! I can't say anything that hasn't been said already, so I am really looking forward to your future work!
Last minute critiques? Last minute critiques. I enjoyed both of these a whole bunch so what I have to say is going to sound super nitpick-y. Anyways here we go!
dotoriii: I'm in love with this candy-coated color scheme... (Ji-ho vs. Sugar Rush?) The only glaring flaw to me is the text is a little wobbly but that hardly got in the way of enjoying it. I guess the perspective on the background in page one is a little odd, but I only really noticed because I was looking for it. I'd say things about the plot but comedy is not at all my forte. The jokes seem well paced, the colors match the tone, it made me chuckle.
William_Duel: Choosing to draw Ji-ho in a more realistic style might have been the wrong move, if only because it makes the cartoon-ier parts of her design (the fangs, the cheek spots, etc.) stand out. That said, I'm not sure if the solution would have been to play it safe and stick close to her design sheet or to take more liberties. Sorry I'm not much help there. The plot was cute, though Mr. Cool is going to earn himself a reputation as a creeper if you aren't careful, haha. I liked seeing his arms being used for non-combat applications, makes them more interesting.
DOTORII- Your technicolor shenanigans were a real enjoyment to pore over. It felt like I was some rave going through your action pages. Your coloring definitely sets a certain tone with your comic, and I for one appreciate it. I definitely think it adds that extra oopmh to the goings on. Also, holy cameos! So glad to see so many of the invitational peeps making an appearance to populate the backgrounds. Too often we get so many battles set in cities that're completely abandoned, its nice you kept that in mind
WILL- Oof, these colors are rough. I don't know if its the quality of the markers you've got, or that you were pressed for time, bu the resulting pages seem to have taken a ding in quality for it. While I'd never discourage someone from adding a splash of color to their pages, I'm left wondering how these pages would've fared if you simply dedicated your time to fully showing some TLC to your inks
@Dotorii; I'm loving the colors you have going on in your comic it really gives it a unique and vibrant feel. Though I really wish I could have seen a bit more of the backgrounds and maybe some more zoomed out shots.
@William_Duel; I wish I could have seen this fully finished! I quite enjoyed the old school coloring style you've got going on. Some of your poses feel a bit off? I think just double checking your poses with some anatomy references would help you quite a bit.
i spy a polme! hehe
i love both of these comics so much, i like your colorful round cute style dotorii it really pops!
and i like your old school esque style william, both of the storys made me giggle at the end!
These are really nice! I think you both came up with really neat plot ideas!
Dotorii: Your coloring is really excellent! Work on Your vehicle drawing - the perspective on that scooter makes it kind of flatten out. Also, I think it would help clarify your storytelling if you pull out more often with the camera like you did in the establishing shot on the first page. Also, for your lettering, it would make things much more neat and professional to use some guides, like even just some lines like on a ruled sheet of paper to keep the writing going in a straight line.
William_Duel: I really enjoyed the story you came up with. The twist at the end with the parents was really sweet. The panel layout on the 1st page was a little difficult to read at first, with the photos being shown alongside the panels of the camera taking the photos. I think it would have been made clearer if the photo panels had that white border around them that instant-print photos have. Other than that, I think that it would be good to work on desaturating some of your colors so they don't overpower one another.
Good luck to both of you!
Oh DUDE I love your side. I was smiling all the way seriously! (I should probably make a proper ref for monster meals hehe) Thanks for drawing my buddy so well! Johnny was also fun to draw & I hope I did him justice haha
Uploaded. I'm sorry for the quality of my pages but I had fun, I tried a lot of new things and I had a lot of fun drawing your character. I'd like to do it again sometime with more time.
