I am still flabbergasted and reeling this comic managed to get past my critiquing crosshairs. Thank goodness I enjoy backtracking!
JACKSTER- This is the kinda monochromatic comic I like to see! You have a near professional handle of your grayscale values and shading (PLEASE tell me you are actively working for a comic company or submitting your work for publication. I'd totally buy it!) with just a dash of sepia I think. Even the color changeover when the pair hit the skies allows for a moment of wonder amidst the spoopy holiday gloominess. Needless to say it gives it just enough of that Halloween spice.
All the hype I remember in the art jam threads didn't disappoint- these two definitely were meant to battle. Its super obvious you had a blast drawing Lil Lily. Those expressions are seriously the best work I've seen you do. From the darkly amusing 'I'll cut you' motion on the top of page 6, to the nightmare fuel of her face on page 18. You went all out and it shows in spades. Honestly, I'm still scratchingmy head as to why this battle didn't get more attention. It was a rather fun ride!
If I really had to choose, my only complaint overall is your backgrounds. While they are beautifully rendered and rather on point, they don't hold the same personality as your characters. For lack of a better word they seem almost painfully exact and mundane in the midst of utter Tex Avery madcap tomfoolery.
NEENS- Not gonna lie, I laughed the moment I turned to page one. The disarming charm of Cult leader Dolly sacrificing a cupcake is so adorably on the nose. Little things like her using an old birthday number candle in her hellish summoning pentagram really shows your appreciation for your opponents aesthetic, so good on ya.
Despite the swing of the votes, for what little you had, I feel character wise, your comic was the stronger of the two. While Jackster utterly slayed by way of action and portrayal of Lily, your comic really made both characters shine. Lil AND Dolly were funny and engaging. Wheras in Jacksters comic, only Lily was the true star of the show. Dolly fell a bit flat for me.
I am utterly and inexplicably raging over the fact Lil Lily is dead and I gotta wait until next October to see mroe of her. Her personality is utterly addictive. Her temper, her one liners and corny jokes are all the things I like. Damn you and your character developed comicky siren song!
Im pretty surprised this didn't get more comments. This battle basically solidified this fall season for Monster Mash and I pretty much liked every page that was happening on both sides.
Jackster your straight line game is strong and your stuff puts out a lot of polish. I would consider this battle a high watermark to strive for.
neens the most heartbreaking thing about this being unfinished is we never get to see Lily's dog! Now we'll never know who has the better dog lol! because Dolly has a pretty strong start here with hers! This is adorable and creative, a little sparse for backgrounds but I love the bright colours and Lily has such an expressive face! Im sad to hear you won't have much time to Void with us but I hope to see Lily again sometime, maybe next October, shes too great of a character to vanish! (I may just have to borrow her from comic to comic!)
Jackster what the fuck are you made of this comic is FANTASTIC! (seriously what inking program/brushes do you use your lines are so gorgeous i could cry). I don't even know how to critique this without just gushing. Your story is adorable. Your expressions are perfect. Your composition and panel layout are perfect. Your backgrounds are great- if theres anything wrong with this comic I am not a strong enough artist to see it. I guess I would have liked to see it coloured like the last couple pages are with just the mood lighting- or maybe take the mood colours out completely and leave it greyscale so its less jarring when its suddenly blue. but thats being nitpicky. you skipped SRT and last MotD both so im super glad to see Dolly again! I wish i could have fought you this month but I can't be too sad when you ended up with such a great opponent, Lil Lily is a great foil for Dolly. But you better prepare for me next October!

Phew! What a hassle this battle was. When I in the middle of inking, I originally planned to color afterwards and then do lettering. That later changed when I had only 3 more days left after I finished inking, so I did the lettering first (which took all day to get done on all my pages) and then color. Here are notes to say about my entry:
- The second half of my comic have half-assed coloring due to coloring at the last minute. I thought I had more time to do it, but sadly that wasn't the case.
- Despite being November, this takes place on Halloween. Because I can.
Other than that, my comic is complete. And I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did with a sore back.
here's the finished pages- long story short, I had a busy month. to tell the truth, I don't know if I can give much more of my time to void battles. that said, I did have fun with this and I hope to finish the rest of what I had on my own time. lil lily is a character I've had for a while now, but these are the first comics I've done with her and I will continue using her outside void.
jackster, the previews I saw looked great and I can't wait to see what you did!
