Dipuc vs Estrella D\' Muerte vs Jane Blonde vs Kaisho Ponbiki | All-Together Now! 2010 Round 2

Ponbiki: Wow, round 2 is looking nice! Such a strong first page! I really like how you took it, a lot of strong blacks on your part. It's a very strong looking distinct style and this battle really helped show it off. Your story felt sort of weak. I guess the old tournament setting feels a little dry, compared to what you could have used with it, but at the same time, the comic isn't ruined by it, nor is it complicated and hard to follow. It's just good old fashioned void and I like that, too. I actually didn't notice the Comic Sans. The grammar, yeah, but not the Comic Sans. Guess your visuals told the story better than your words needed to. I do think your close ups are stronger than your backed up shots and the same can be said about your backgrounds. They felt a little sparse and empty and lacking detail. You hide them in explosions and blacks, but the buildings could have used some kind of bricks or anything besides the stark white. However, you've got really good anatomy and action sense that helps cover it up. I also really liked the way you handled Dipuc in this fight and the ending was really good, I love karmic justice. 4 years is far too long of a wait to see Estrella D' Muerte getting used again. Ponbiki is a terrific inclusion and it's really great to see all these fights from you. I'm glad you got into this tournament, because you're giving real quality here. I can't wait for your semi-finals entry. Super job. MisterKent: I am seriously drawn into your story here, amazing work. I thought you handled all of this very well. Your art is really nice here, very very clean. However, it feels like it's all primed up for a slab of colors or grays. It could have been stronger work to make the blacks pop out more. Try working in stronger black usage into your characters next time, it might be a good move for you. Page 6's panel with Black Dog's gray arms are kind of weird to me. I would have worked on making those lines in white vs. turning them gray. I dunno how much I like the interaction between Dipuc & co. and Ponbiki/Estrella. Something about it just feels kind of forced, I guess? I loved the scenes inside of Jane's mind and her pupils changing to their silhouettes looks very cool, but I guess it felt sort of pushed in there. I liked your backgrounds here too. Nothing too complex, but enough that I wasn't dry-mouth for them, either. It's a damned shame you lost, because this was a really engaging story and I seriously want to see where you're going to go with it. However, I do know you've got a lot of plans to resolve this storyline and I also can't wait to see what you're going to do with it. You made a great comic here and I am really excited to see what you'll do next. Amazing job.

Nice job you guys, most of what I thought has already been said. You both did good though :)

Pon-I don't have to touch on comic sans since someone already pointed it out. But because you've had a lot of problems with lettering in the past http://entervoid.com/board/index.php?topic=11449.0 should help you a lot. The art was very nice here but you're still having tons of issues with clarity. Like page 4 because you didn't show who was knocking on the door I was confused about who got pulled in. While logic dictates that the little guy in the bottom panel must have been it, I would have liked to have seen it. The same with page 5, because you didn't show her with the little remote to the bomb prior to the BEEP panel, I was confused about what the BEEP was until the next page. You also missed out on a chance to build up on her having a bomb. I think you overall have a nice feel for action but because you jump around a lot it can make things confusing. Kent-I really liked the story here and the quality was consistent with your previous comics. I however had no idea where this comic was taking place since you never really gave us that information. You can take shortcuts with backgrounds from time to time since it's not necessary to have a background in every panel, but it would have been helpful to plop at least one establishing shot on that first page to given the audience that information.

it's not often I say this but... I wish you both could win. Both of these plots have me hooked. Kudos to both of ya.
