Cool Artists I Found

Cool Artists I Found
« on: Oct 20, 2011, 11:13 PM »
So kinda similar to the Cool Stuff I Found thread except specifically geared towards artists.  I mean, we show each other our crappy art, why not show each other our crappy tastes?  I'll go first!

Sana Takeda
I love her painterly style.  She's a Japanese artist who on occasion works for Marvel comics, etc.

Today, Google honors Mary Blair, a notable Disney colorist and concept artist. She was also a children's book illustrator, but I didn't find this out until today reading articles about her.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/nationnow/2011/10/mary-blair-google-doodle.html

Her design work is really beautiful--in addition to movies like Alice and Wonderland, she designed the cute little kiddies on the It's a Small World ride!

I know he has atleast 2 artbooks out.  A 2007 Sketch collection, which is 1000 pages!!!!  And a 2011 one which is over 600 pages!!  And comes with a custom sketch cover.  All I could find on how to get them is the 2011 book which is 60 bucks but since it's some chinese place the shipping costs more than the damn book making it 140 bucks american.  There is talk of a french release in 2012 though which might be easier to obtain and lighter on the wallet tho.

Shohei Otomo is the son of Katsuhiro Otomo and he is a damn fine artist in his own right.  Works in ballpoint pen and ink mostly.

Interview and videos of him drawing: http://5magazine.wordpress.com/2011/03/05/shohei-otomos-pop-manga/
“The ink isn’t reflective like the lead tracing of pencils, and best of all it’s cheap! An 80 Yen ballpoint pen lasts me 10 drawings.”

Tumblr's are bullshit & I don't ever want to be the guy crusading for them. But Johnny, sincerely, out of EVERYBODY? The way your ear's to the ground with artists & great page sequences & shit? You need a fucking tumblr with the stuff you're looking at (or if you already have one I don't know about you need to give me the goddamn URL already). I consider myself pretty knowledgeable, & I still only know of about half the stuff you're finding. And it all ranges from 'pretty fucking cool' right on up to 'fucking amazing.'
For serious, consider it.

And post some more of your own art too, asshole!

It's funny because I've been seriously considering doing one of those artist tribute tumblrs for one of my favorite artists because of the very little internet presence he has has and the amount of his work I have.  But yeah I luck across most of these folks, there are some sites/people I can always count on to have some awesome shit and taste and then I just look through their friends/favorites/links/whatevers.  Something awesome always turns up.  and then I annoy folks in the jamzchat with links to them. lol

Also, dudes!!! C'mon Post some cool stuff for me to oogle!!!!

I like Sailormoon.  And people sometimes do really interesting redesigns and then...not so interesting redesigns.  I think this counts as an interesting one.  I like Sailor Saturn because I always like Sailor Saturn.  (Death Busters Arc was the best)
This dude's art is cool:

Esteban Maroto

He's a classic traditional artist who was really well known for his sensual female figures yet well proportioned and attention to detail.  He's known in the US for some work on Satana, a Marvel character as well as works on Horror comics like Creepy and Vampirella, etc.

I'm personally a huge fan of Aaron Diaz at Dresden Codak:

He's got some cool comic theory posts, especially about designing unique and clearly identifiable characters, although some of his digs at Marvel may hit the wrong audience here.

Vania Zouravliov
I just found this artist but his body of work has set my mind ablaze.  This website I am linking also features other artists (some who are more on the graphic design side of things) but this guy, he's quite simply the best IMO.  And you know, I didn't realize before I linked boobs so I'm putting up NSFW.  Here's some more boobs:

Adam Dant
British Artist who draws complex architectural drawings which reveal lots of mythological and fantastical elements relevant to the location piece.  Well known for his 'mockuments' which are a series of maps, charts and floor plans which reveal often weird histories or satirical ideas (you know, British wit).  Also known for 'Underneathism' which is like it sounds, a depiction of things from underneath.

The three artists I will never shut up about and you probably ignore me when I talk about them:
You can probably see how much of an influence I picked up from them o_o
All comic artists.

MOTHERFUCKING NIHEI. GOD I LOVE HIS SHIT. Easily one of my main inspirations for getting into comics (even though he had no effect on my style at all).
- I yearn for redemption, but I'll settle for a breakfast sandwich.
