Fourth and a Half Jam: http://entervoid.com/index.php?topic=12716.0

This is based on The Exquisite Beast by Yuko Ota and Void vet Evan Dahm.
http://exquisitebeast.tumblr.com/archive

In the course of the original interactions with Ota, Evan refers to a Disney animated short form the 1950's which he found very inspirational;

...and the Discovery Channel produced a special program called Alien Planet in 2005
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHzPEpHYtXQ

We start with a simple creature, then take turns showing how it evolves and progresses over millions of years of evolution. In The Exquisite Beast, the artists would take turns drawing a step in the evolution. But here, we can just all take a spot.

As with last jam, we start with a really stupid looking creature that I drew.....Yeah, the first one is always lame, but take a look at the previous jam for ideas on how to evolve this guy.

Description:
feel encouraged to add a description to your entries ....this fuzzy little fucker lives in the high grass and treetops of a forest region and lives on a diet of grubs, larvae and roots.

JAM RULES:

1. If you claim a spot, please draw something in a timely manner or your turn will be skipped. There is now a deadline of four days...remember other people might be waiting on you.

2. Drawings need to have some effort but do not have to have colour(just try to do a better job than me with the colour if you do.)

3. Realistic evolutionary jumps only. Things happen gradually.....so I really want people to GO SLOW. You should also be including aspects from the previous efforts not completely re-making the creature yourself.

4. Backgrounds are optional.

I know it's kind of horrible.... had some things come up at work right after I hopped on board for this, and I had to take care of them first.... then my dog of 13 years died yesterday morning.... so that was no fun... :-(

So anyways, I was thinking that a combo of deforestation and lack of food would force this little guy closer to the ground. He'd start to develope stripes to blend in with the tall grasses that are now his primary home, and would start to rely more on the roots, grubs, and a berry that grows among the grass. For the digging it would need to do for food during colder months, its claws have grown longer and front arms are more muscular and longer for digging in the soil. It's eyes have also enlarged and become better at seeing at night, as it is on the ground more, thus further exposed to day predators, so does it's feeding at night mostly now.

good concept and nice slow progression Dan....... even if your unfortunate situation and circumstance did not allow for better execution I still like what you did here

Aww, sorry about your dog :(
I dunno if this would be a good idea or a total bummer but if we had a Pet Memorial art jam thread, anyone who's had a pet pass away could get their pet drawn by other Voiders (tastefully of course). Then you'd have all kinds of nice art to remember your pet by. :)

Anyways, I really dig the colors and the direction this lil blue guy/gal/fur-thing is headed. Night animals are cool. Do these things ever get named?

Due to deforestation and climate change most of the plants in this critter's habitat couldn't survive... but the hardy berries these guys feed on endured the lengthening cold seasons and flourished. The creatures now tend to sleep together for protection during the day and forage in packs at twilight. They use their long arms to dig up tasty roots and to eat the berries. Its eyes and ears have developed to sense predators in the area. If the pack is attacked the creature will use its strong limbs to scamper away, running on all fours. Slowest one gets eaten!

Aaaand one without the bg...

interesting choices Gregly
a radical change in the head shape but I like the little goatee and it was still a gradual change overall

Here you go, I hope my not skipping has taken a bit of the WEIght off your shoulders  :D

While the berries have flourished, other plants have not. As a result, other animals have died out from the lack of food, leaving predators even more of a danger with less amount of prey to pick on. Ever wary, our little friend's ears have grown even larger. From all the bending, crouching and digging, they've developed a bit of a hunch on their back with their head closer to the ground, their front legs growing large and meatier than their back legs. With their front paws, they dig shallow holes as nests, to sleep with their packs during the day, and then rise at twilight to forage and play in semi-darkness.

He is clearly a pokemon, and I am now calling him Critemon.
