GO FOR BROKE! / I Finished My Comic
« on: Apr 07, 2012, 10:02 AM »
Hi everyone!

I haven't posted here in a while. I miss you guys. I am regularly tempted to come back for a few battles and I might actually have to do so in the near future.

Anyways, I wanted to let you know that I recently finished a comic that I have been working on for the past two years or so. It's a science fiction slice of life story called Sexbuzz. I think it's the best thing I've ever done, and I'd love for you to take a look at it. Here's the opening sequence to give you an idea of what it's like:

Hello again. I just posted 21 new pages from that Sexbuzz comic on my website. Not the entirety of the new chapter, but I felt like updating and this was a good stopping point so there you go. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Thanks you two. Here are a few more things:

First, another page from Sexbuzz that came out well.

Also here's a recent illustration job -- a book cover. I'm not very good at coloring.

News & Events / Re: VCAST 3.0-a new Void podcast-EPISODE 8 UP
« on: Aug 14, 2011, 10:34 AM »
This was my favorite episode so far. Pi, your passion for the site is contagious and you articulated many of my feelings about Void much more coherently than I ever could. I'll quickly add that I am more than a little nostalgic for the times of harsh crits, etc. on Void. I know it was important in my own growth as a cartoonist to have been called out several times when I first started posting here and I know of at least a couple other people who feel the same way.

(Also thanks for the shout out. I'm going to do another short story on Void soon and maybe I'll join a tournament or something once I finish my book.)

Hi everyone! I haven't posted here in forever, but I've been busy working on a bunch of comics. Here are a few of them. Please let me know what you think...I'm always super open to crits, etc.

First, a few pages from a comic adapting a short story by Italo Calvino.

You can read the rest of that here.

Next, here's some stuff from Sexbuzz, my ongoing soft scifi thing. It's about 100 pages so far and looks like it's going to end at around 160.

It doesn't directly follow that last sequence, but here are a few more pages that I just finished yesterday. Posting them here first because I just love you guys so very much.

Resources & Tutorials / Re: Art Tools:What do you use and WHY?
« on: Jul 10, 2011, 03:55 AM »
Here's a hot tip for pentel brush pens: they're great but the ink in them is terrible. Forget it exists and dip them in some nice black ink like you would a normal brush. Anyways...

Pens
Tachikawa School Nib and Tachikawa G-Nib
These are both dip pens. The school nib is fairly stiff and gives a smooth, consistent line; I mostly use it for backgrounds. The G-Nib gives you more line variation but can be a little finicky at times. It's also the nib traditionally used by Japanese cartoonists.
Where you can buy it: http://www.jetpens.com/
Pros: A lot of people will tell you to ink with Hunt nibs, but I much prefer these Japanese School Nibs and G-Nibs for several reasons. First, they're larger and therefore easier to keep clean. This also means they hold more ink. They last much longer than any other nibs I know of as well. Tachikawa is just my personal brand preference; there are lots of different options out there.
Cons: No cons to these specifically, but dip pens in general have a pretty steep learning curve. It's going to take a while to learn how to use them properly.
Examples of work done with it:
(This is mostly school nib, but there's a little G-Nib in there as well)

Great idea for a thread, angie, and thanks for including me.

To add to the print-on-demand list, I would dissuade people from using Comixpress (http://www.comixpress.com/). Their printing quality is pretty good, but I've have too many bad experiences in terms of turn around times and customer service to say it's worth using them. Lulu is my personal preference.

GUYS!! I am incredibly flattered that you remembered my little comic -- it really means a lot. <3<3

If anyone is interested, I do in fact have a (self-published) book and a webcomic, which I was of course working on as I listened to the vcast.

Also, I'm planning to do another short story on Void very soon.

Fun stuff, guys. It would be really neat if you could interview Void veterans that are now doing their own comics; I'd love to hear what people like Sheldon, James, Marley, Evan, etc. feel that they learned from their time on Void.

Also, would you mind sharing how you recorded this? I've been working on some podcast stuff myself and your audio quality was a lot better than any of the Skype recording programs I have tried.

I do this all the time and it's really helpful.  I usually like to work from cartoonists that have really strong compositions, and do just a quick sketch of the page focusing on layout, placing blacks, etc, rather than trying to get an exact copy.  I would recommend adding Alex Toth, Jaime Hernandez, Jacques Tardi and Yoshihiro Tatsumi to the already solid list you guys have complied.

Reviews / Re: So what comics are you reading?
« on: Jul 23, 2010, 11:13 AM »
Yeah, I agree with Angie.  The idea is just to get rid of the big hubs like OneManga and force people to make more of an active effort to seek out scanlations, which I really do think will decrease the number of people that do it; searching bittorrent or always looking for new sites is too time consuming for a casual reader.  Legal manga sites aren't a great alternative, at least in my opinion; I would much rather pay $10 for a 200 page book than $1 for 200 pages online.  The issue of getting people to pay for things online once they've become used to getting them for free is much larger than manga publishing, however -- newspapers, for instance, are facing the same problems.  Still, publishers should be able address this question on their own terms and not have their hand forced by scanlators; it's entirely within their moral and legal rights to force sites like OneManga to close.

The manga companies have never really gone out of their way to do anything about it until now, is the way i am understanding it.

Apparently the majority of major manga companies have now contacted the major sites and told them to stop.

My beef is that it takes so long for translations to hit our shores, what are we supposed to do now? wait a year and a half for the stories etc to catch up?

Yes.  Look, for a long time I read as much manga online as the next guy, but I think the perspective of the manga publishers has much more merit than most of you guys seem to think (I'm not trying to pick on you in particular, Enef).  The manga market has been in decline for some time, and the publishers were bound to address scanlations at some point.  I first got into comics through scanlations, and I really am sorry to see them go, but good on the publishers for taking this united, uniform initiative rather than the haphazard address-one-site-every-once-in-a-while approach that Marvel and DC have been taking to address the same problem.  It was going to happen eventually, and it really bugs me when people act like they are entitled the right to read illegal scanlations.  Maybe some of the Naruto scanlators will take this opportunity to instead translate some of the great manga that still isn't available in English, for which I don't see as big of a problem with online distribution.

Wolcik, I'm more sympathetic to your complaint, because I was in the same situation for a while (living in a country where I couldn't get much manga in print) but the vast majority of English speaking manga readers are in countries where they could purchase manga if they chose to do so, and you can't really blame the publishers for not really taking the small minority that you are a part of in account.  It might be expensive, but for stuff that you really want to buy there's always the Internet.

On a related point, I think that now would be a great time for publishers like Viz and Tokyopop to cut the prices on their manga volumes by lowering production values.  Unlike, say, some of the more literary manga published by places like Vertical, Naruto, One Piece and the like are mass market products, and they should be treated as such in terms of presentation.  If American publishers followed the format of the Japanese tankoubons more closely (chiefly with smaller sizes and lower paper quality), I would imagine their books would be a couple dollars cheaper, and annoucning such a change now would go a long way towards appeasing the hardcore fans that will be angriest about this anti-scanlation initiative.

Anyways, sorry to derail this thread.  That was much longer than I planned it to be.  I recently finished Dylan Horrocks' Hicksville and I highly recommend it.
