THE INCUBATOR / Rile the Asura

Ok, I'm biting the bullet on this one!

Some people in the discord chat have encouraged me to try making a '3D comic' character, where I create a 3D character and prepare a model of my opponent before we start our fight, and then use the time during the actual battle to do posing, paneling, post editing, dialogue/word bubbles, and perhaps even animation (my favorite!)

To that end, please have a gander at this fellow. This is just the sculpt, it will become a low poly model and will be textured/rigged/animated.

Here is the original concept art:

Please let me know what you think! I know 3D isn't exactly the standard around here, so I'm interested in what people have to say about this.

Hey guys!

This isn't strictly comic related, and it -may- turn into paid work later on, so if it needs to be deleted/moved respectively feel free to do so.

So I'm doing a cartoon pitch to Cartoon Hangover, and wanted to look for someone to help me out with the project on the art side. I already have a majority, if not all of the characters voiced and designed for the pitch, but I need someone who can do quick and dirty storyboarding AND/OR backgrounds for animation.

Qualifications for this:

-MUST have knowledge of how animated camera moves are done. I can and will provide sketches for the backgrounds of how I generally want them to look but things like camera turns will look really wonky if you don't know how they're done. For storyboarding, you can just draw on top of the basic backgrounds and use squares and arrows to represent camera moves, so it's not as necessary.

-Must have a good critical eye for your own work as well as mine. This is a team project (Even if it is my brainchild) and I would love feedback. Likewise, you will also receive constructive feedback, so a thick skin and the ability to take things with a grain of salt are a major bonus.

For storyboards: Please be a quick drawer. I need the storyboards quickly and timely, and changes are likely to be made on a whim. Since this isn't a paying gig right off the bat, I understand things like life, but I'm going to be gearing up for production in the coming weeks and need these storyboards presented on a daily basis. Also, don't worry about being particularly good! If you've got good motion design and are good enough to portray which character is which, you've got a chance at the role (Though for Voiders I'm expecting at least a good basis from you lot! :) )

For Background artists: You can take your time. Backgrounds can be changed mid production as needs change, but the whole point of the storyboard artist is that the planning is good enough that we don't need to go through the trouble of that. So make it a piece worth looking at!

Lastly, some info on the project in general to help the setting for you guys: It's a fantasy themed post apocalyptic world. For Backgrounds, I'd love a concept art painterly style done for them; varying tones, good form and understanding of lighting and mood are huge bonues. They don't need to be particularly detailed; on the contrary, I need them to be quite simple so they don't detract from the animation, which is going to be quite hyper and exciting (aside from a few calm shots).

I'm giving this to Voiders first since you guys have helped me grow as an artist a lot in the past few years. However, in a week or two I'm widening my search to other sites. I know this may not be quite up your guys' alley, but I wanted to give back a bit from the community.

I think that's everything. Feel free to email me at xanderwx@gmail.com with portfolios or questions, or you can simply post here.

Cheers guys!

Edit: Oh, forgot one thing! This is an opportunity to break into the animation industry in general, as the project will be carried out as a series regardless of if the pitch to cartoon Hangover is not accepted. If you think you're up to that, feel free to send stuff my way!

LET'S DO THIS

Ok so I did like 5 iterations of this character before coming to this. This started off as a bit of a joke, but then people started seriously telling me to do it, so here we are: Every comic will be sprited from scratch. Everything written after this sentence is due to change without notice (i.e. It's still a WIP). The character himself is a bit of a mess right now, so critique is greatly appreciated:

This dragon boy is the embodiment of "The World" card. He is fundamentally connected to the world around him in strange and often incomprehensible ways. This attachment causes him to seek out supernatural/mythological occurences and attempt to resolve them. The method for resolving these is different for each one; for instance, a supernatural beast might require him to kill or subdue it, while will-o-the-wisp would be absorbed or the like. This is more of a reflex than a conscious effort, however, and serves more as a unique storytelling mechanic than any set in stone rules about it.

Abilities:
"The World" Connection ability
Super durable body (Incredibly difficult to break bones, scaled parts of his body (arms, legs) are practically impenetrable, although scales can be broken off)
About twice the strength of an average adult human
Potential for shapeshifting, but incapable of it at the time being

Personality:
This half dragon, half human hybrid is a mischevious little scamp. He loves to play pranks on unsuspecting people, using his great claws to escape by climbing or skittering away before people can catch him. However, he can be quite brooding and serious when his "World" reflex kicks in, making him rather unpredictable. Normally, he adores attention, whether it be good or bad. He's also an incredible foody, to such an extent that he can be easily tricked with a delicacy as a bait.

Background:
He took to living in the Void clocktowers, where he could look out over the city and find all new things to explore and new people to trick. It also offers a great vantage point for his "World" connection. He is rather lonely, and enjoys his time simply eating, pranking, or hunting down strange things to resolve. His past is a mystery, as he hasn't met anyone to tell his story to!

THE INCUBATOR / Crazyhand/Allen
« on: May 28, 2012, 11:50 PM »
Okay, let's do this.

Crazyhand is just a placeholder name for now.

Crazyhand was a scientist working with alternate dimensions when his right hand got sucked into another dimension. When he got it back, it was possessed with an eye stuck on the back, and he had no control over it whatsoever. After it killed off his colleagues, he ran from the cops, fleeing to Void city looking for answers.

This character has a separate writer. He hasn't joined the site just yet but I'll get him to do so soon. Intro comic coming soon as well.

GO FOR BROKE! / Rushdown: The Art of Base
« on: May 02, 2010, 10:45 PM »
Hey guys. I wanted to make a thread to show off art and get some critiques. I haven't given up on Trix yet, mind you, but I just started school so I'm juggling about a million things at once with not nearly enough time to draw.

So let's just get this rolling.

A friend from my animation class. She recently broke her arm, so I figured it'd be a fun drawing practice to draw her while she was playing games on her DS with one hand. I actually really like how this turned out, as I usually end up making figure drawing look absolutely atrocious...

This ones really big so I'm just posting a thumbnail. I doodled this while trying to stay awake in class. Most of the anatomy issues with the hand and arms are fixed, my friend is coloring it for me so I don't have a more recent scan of it.

Just some facial/expression practice. I think I nailed the crackwhore look here.

Some simple character practice. I wanted to draft a bunch of mannerism-influenced poses and face expressions of the character to get the feel of her before animating her. I really enjoy doing stuff like this, especially the 'lip sync' test of her saying "What the Fuck". I'll be doing some pencil tests of her (hopefully this week! Since I need to show it in class soon anyways).

A new character design. The idea behind him is if Fenrir's 'soul' was forced into a human body, and he was denied his role in Ragnarok. Fenrir, being a very prideful character in Norse mythology, essentially goes batshit insane over time, resulting in this character: a self destructive, violent dog who does only what he's told by whoever is strong enough to control him. It's a little messy here, but he wears the imaginary ribbon that the gods used to chain him, tied in an elegant bow in the front, and in the back has a long tail that behaves similar to how a dog tail would.

A rather uninspired redesign of 710. Won't be sticking around but I thought it was interesting enough to show, I guess. I don't really like it. I'm struggling with his design as it doesn't feel solid enough, so I think I'm gonna try to go for a more military design, maybe incorporate some suggestions from Trix's incubator thread (mostly, the idea of showing him with his 'death injuries'. Not sure what I want to do with it but I'll figure something out). It's hard because I don't have anything personal or some idea I like to base him off of, like other characters, to bring out a character... I'll keep fussing with it.

I'm also working on a multitude of other projects, including a 3D animation, a 2D animation, some assets for a TF2 map for a friend, and character designs, models, and animation for a fighting game with a friend. Plus, along with school, I have work, though my wrist injury is making that difficult anyways. But that's all irrelevant! I've still got art to do, so look forward to some more stuff in the near future.
