Ehhh..... I'll do it. Though I still suffer shame from my Battle Royale.

Mecid- - Nowhere Boy

Do what you will. Because if any character is going to be hardcore in this event, it's Nowhere Boy.

Reviews / Re: So what comics are you reading?
« on: Aug 04, 2009, 06:23 AM »

Hitman was fun (and remarkably depressing at times) while it lasted. It has the character 'Dogwelder' in it, which I think may be the only thing most people remember about it. You can dig out most issues from the dollar bin.... or atleast that's how I started reading it.

Also Invincible was okay but I found it got more and more boring as time went on. Mostly because I found myself liking a lot of the side characters more and tragically, that's not what the book is about. Don't get me wrong. I love superheroes. It's just they built up this neat side cast and I have to focus on this guy I wasn't a huge fan of to begin with.

Is anyone watching 'Batman: The Brave and the Bold'? Because you seriously need too.

Recommend all of them but if you're short on time go with 'Terror on Dinosaur Island' and 'Evil Under the Sea'.

If you can get over the 'Oh my god, this isn't 'Batman: The Animated Series', it's very good. Where BTAS embraced the darker roots of the character, 'Brave and the Bold' embraces the era of Batman where there was fun. It's also a team up series but doesn't usually use the big guns. Green Arrow, Aquaman and the new Blue Beetle are used the most. Off the top of my head other heroes I can recall are Adam Strange, Entrigan, the new Atom and Plastic Man. Also Aquaman is amazing in this series.  The villians are heavy second and third tier, going so far as to have Gentleman Ghost be a main villain in two or three episodes.

You're comics come off as fun and remind me a Timo, though only in style. Not in writing.

There isn't much to critique with your actual drawings as you've developed a style. So for me to say 'This need to be more realistic' is me just being a dick. Plus I don't really think that. I will however have to say that I much prefer your brush work over pen if you're just doing a black and white comic. You're line width seems more fluid. However if your going to do some heavy ink wash, I think you stick with the pen. Isn't that weird?

I say that mostly because your pen work, while good in drawing, doesn't have a decent amount of depth. When you put wash over it, it adds a lot more to it without overwhelming your work. Like the earlier comic with the women giving the water. When you use brush, there's a lot more depth and variation. There's no need to add much to it. Your french explorer is the best example of that, as you only had to add slight gray over the character to help him stand out a bit more.

Mostly I just want to say that you should keep trying different things and actually work on some action if you want. It's the only thing of yours that usually comes off as stiff.

Your coloring over your hand drawn stuff and your attempts at digital realism are vastly different.  It's kinda funny because I think your cel shading is very nice. But when you try to do more gradation/ realistic stuff, you seem to get stuck. It's more obvious in your self portrait, where you try to use brown as a majority of the facial shading. It would work with cel but not realistic stuff. There's more color variations in shadows, especially on people.

You seem to have a better grasp of it in the tree picture, where the shadows contain purples to green. The highlights are nice as well. You just have to fix the texture on the trees as they get closer. They come off as shiney rather then having a rougher texture. Keep in mind I have no idea what you assignment is, so I could just be missing the idea.

Also watch some of the photoshop effects you're using for textures, both in your realistic pictures and hand drawn ones. Some of your recent ones seem to be using that grain and paper textures as an attempt to compensate for backgrounds. Some of them could just be a colored character on a colored background. That chubby dude specifically stands out on his own rather then feeling like I'm watching him through a bad t.v.

I would like to say that your actual drawings have improved a lot, as well as your comics on the site. I enjoy your random experiments and feel that you should keep playing around. I think it helps tremendously in finding a style that works for you. If I might suggest using a bit more line width variation in the sense that if something is suppose to be closer to me, the line is thicker. It would also be awesome if you try experimenting now with characters interacting with a background. You seem comfortable enough with drawing people that it would be nice to have them doing stuff in a set place now. Though character sketches once and a while are neat.

Ahaha. I knew someone was going to say that as soon as I posted. I was thinking about fighting Kumaru but I wanted to see who I would randomly challenge me first. It's more fun that way.

But I'll get you Kumaru.... just later. Because I'm battling someone else at the moment.

Been lurking for a few days...weeks...Anyway, I'm Mecid. Art Student. 20 years old. Yadda yadda. I've studied comics for what seems like forever and tend to know a lot about them. Not just story wise but theories and stuff. However, I tend to talk more then have actual skill at drawing. I've been working on a fighter and hope that he will not die horrifically. And if he does, I hope to improve upon him *shrug*

I have a deviant art web page under mecid

If you feel the need to yell at me through AIM DonnaTroyDances is the way to go.
