HEYYYY IT'S THE WELCOME WAGON! I love seeing all these vets come back for this jam.

You guys, I'm serious about making a game out of this, but I'm debating between MUGEN and Figher Maker. MUGEN would allow you to mix and match characters, whereas Fighter Maker could be a complete game in and of itself and, I think, would allow us to battle each other over the internet. So. What are your preferences? Right now I'm leaning towards Fighter Maker so it can be a self-contained game and stuff, but I'm open to persuasion if anyone cares enough. :)

Just giving my pretty subjective opinion here. Durp.

I think a Mugen game would be awesome, tho' it would probably make up for yet another Jam. Sprite Action Jam, or something. People would need to make a movement sprite of their character. As well as Pain, defeat, attack, jump, crouch, lean, block, etc.
I think it would be fun. But again, We wouldn't be able to pit againts each other.

I have no knowledge about the other one, Figter Maker, but since you mentioned it could be a complete game and we could battle each other, that sounds even more amazing, as it would allow the community to grow up even more.

All in all, I vote for the Fighter Maker.

there was always a lot of talk about making a void game, but talk is cheap. if you really want to do it, do it in the medium most conducive to finishing it.

This was from the last attempt at a void game JJ was doing pose corrections and anatomy and a few people were spriting at the time. I still have p2 crazy sam and dumas sprites saved...i think

here we go

MUGEN can get kind of buggy, and most of the people I know swear by Fighter Maker, but I don't know nothin' bout nothin' except that we should probably get some people in the FCG to work with us if we want to actually build a fighting game, since they'd have more knowledge about programming, hitboxes, frame data, etc.

Also WHOOOAAA P2 RETURNS

@pi: Dude, I totally know what you mean! I'm not gonna promise anything for sure until I get a good look at the tools available, but I'm dead serious about giving this a shot, and if I start, I WILL finish. That said, it might be good to pay attention to who's gonna be around long enough for the game to still be good when it's done :)

After working on this for two days, here's one fighter down.

The alternate color ones, from top to bottom, are a reference to her father, her mother, and her brother.

Bobo, if you need someone to create graphic files for the game, let me know. I have 4 years of training as a designer.

I love this. I think this is my fave entry to this jam - nice pixel animations for sure.

Yo guys, this is awesome. I haven't had time to throw my hat into the ring but I'll do so asap.

As for making a void fighter, that'd be really sweet. I'm working on a fighting game right now and it's a lot of work but it's worth it to see stuff in action.

That said, MUGEN isn't the best option, unless you want a game for the sake of having a game. If you want it to be quality, I suggest finding a coder who is willing to help out (I know a few people who we might be able to recruit, and even beyond that, there are coding forums for hiring people) and making an engine from scratch.

If you guys need any tips on where to begin and what all needs to happen to make a game, I'd be more than happy to help out. Cheers!

Base, I'm just looking for the easiest option available. Of course I'd love to build an awesome game from scratch, but I'm not willing to pay for this and I doubt many coders would really be interested in dedicating time to making a game with such a limited fan base.

That said, if someone would be willing to hard code this, I'd be all for that! And any help would be awesome. Wow, you guys are amazing!

I just had a thought: do you think people would actually be interested in PAYING for a Void fighter if we actually made it decent? Like if we could just sell it as a cheap iPhone app or something? Because that would be wicked awesome, and could maybe help pay for the site a little more...

Aside from iphone, it could go on xbox live indie, or it could be taken to tournaments/ranbats/cons, hell, even EVO, depending on how good it is.

Never underestimate the power of the fighting game community to get a good game out there.

Also, I'd personally like it to be good so that it'd be enjoyable to play technical-wise. Although, we could make it as broken as MvC2 and it'd still be able to be played!

Ideally we'd want to make a game that could be easily expandable to continually include new fighters. Making a new engine from scratch might be a bit beyond our scope, but perhaps we could utilize a Middleware engine like Construct or GameMaker? Heck, TIGSource (an indie gaming forum I was part of for a while) was working on an Indie Brawl based of Smash Bros- maybe we could grab the engine from that?

We might even want to consider a non-electronic game. How about an EnterVoid card battling game?

That'd be sweet, Yomi did the card battling thing really well.

I think MUGEN can work for your purposes, but just expect it to be wonky at times if you use it.

I'm super busy lately but I'd be happy to try to do some spriting for this as well.

Well, if this is going to be a real thing, we'll all probably have to do new versions on our characters.

One other thing is the style - is this going to be in the same vein as this jam where it's like pocket fighters?  Maybe there should be a discussion topic for this somewhere else so people can continue putting u actual entries instead of filling this up with ideas.  It'll help both topics :)

I WOULD LOVE A SSB-like Void fighting game! I never really liked fighting games until Smash Bros. came around, to be honest, so I'd be much more excited building a game based around that play style. If there is an engine out there that we could build off of, I would definitely go for it. I've used Game Maker before, so that might also be an option. Another one I've looked at briefly is Game Salad, although it sounds like AI would be pretty much impossible with that one; the upside would be that it can publish games to pretty much anything (iPods, HTML5, Androids, etc.).

I also agree with Zest that we would want to make this something we could easily build out and add to, especially since Void is constantly changing and fighters and artists come and go all the time. I think a published game could  be an awesome way to advertise the site as well as making more money, possibly.

As for a card game, that would also be awesome. We talked briefly about creating a custom tarot card deck, but a card game would probably be much more viable. I'm still interested in going for a full electronic fighting game, but a card game could maybe be a back-up option (or even a parallel project, since not everyone would be working on the video game at once).

Smash Bros is ok, but I'd personally prefer a more flashier, straightforward fighter in the vein of Street Fighter or the VS series as that seems more "voidlike" to me. That's a personal opinion, though.

There's also the option of making a puzzle drop fighter like the original Gem Fighter series/Puyo Puyo!

Good idea, Mintley! I've started a new topic here. Let's keep this thread just for actual Pocket Fighters Jam stuff. :)
