Well the book is now underway but of course, only due from the efforts of people like you.  (Yes, I mean YOU)  But the book is missing one vital component and since I am a lazy bastard, I'm gonna have you pick up the slack and do the work for me:

The Black Stripe needs a book cover.

THE PRIZE
The winner who gets featured on the cover will get a free copy of the book (this is coming out of my own pocket so the site is not responsible and the winner will have to sort out details with me).  All other entries will also be featured in the book as pinups if so desired by the artists involved but only the cover artist gets bragging rights.

That's right, the cutoff point will be about a month before the book's due date because I'd like to have the cover done before the book is.

Who picks the winner?

Me.  Because I am a champ.  I can only be bribed with sex.  But of course, I'll be consulting with the other mods and my hope, whether it's feasible or not, is to score a nice iconic cover that will be a paragon for covers to come.  In all seriousness covers will be judged based on their artistic merit, execution and design.  They can be as complex or as simple as you want them to be.

Requirements

-Entry must be in color and done in RGB
-Must be 300 dpi
-Must be 7X10.5
-. Text must be clear and fit the aesthetics of the cover. So obviously no scribbles/comic sans.
-Collaborations are fine, just don't use this thread to set them up.
-Will contain the fabulous logo made by Red Revolver so plan ahead:

-When you submit your image, you can also submit an logo-less image to be used as a pinup in case you do not win but still wish to be featured.


Content
The cover can be anything.  It can be as simple or as complicated as you'd like.  You can incorporate the idea of the Black Stripe if you want to or not but I'm sure if the theme (New Beginnings) is incorporated into the design you'll get brownie points and they will be delicious.  The limit I will impose to avoid overlap with our other book, is no VOID characters and while I hope this goes without saying, no copyrighted content.

is this another anthology? a new beginning is rather broad spread for theme so i have difficulties to imagine what the cover should represent.

if its an actual comic book telling a story i would appreciate some info about the story or the content.

but aside my confusion i just feel like i missed a big thing here i should have heard of :/

But I'll walk you through my thinking so feel free to disagree with me or point out anything you don't agree with for the sake of a better product:

So yes this is a new general anthology with the purpose of exposure and fun for our members.  I didn't want to call it Pulpo because I felt I'd be trying to take up someone else's (Galvo's) baby and I wanted to reflect how this is a new project.  (Plus Pulpo 5 is still on the way right...?  ...right...?)

I made the theme very vague on purpose because at first I didn't want to give the book a theme because it's the first one, but I realized that anthologies are strongest when they have some sort of theme.  I wanted it to be as flexible as possible to get the widest range of stories for this first one.  My plan is to have more specific themes in the future though.  But I thought a New Beginning was general enough to include themes like rebirth, starting over, reconstruction, etc.  Basically I wanted to give people the freedom to submit what they liked or thought was good.  I'm sorry if this is a problem and if people think so we can narrow it down.

And finally this thread is for the cover that should go on the book and is therefore a contest which is why it's separate from the main thread.

yeah that was a help well representing that might be a pointer for the cover... i mean. it might be fitting to include different impressions of new beginnings within that cover to set a sense for the wide spread possibilities.

actually i appreciate it being so vague. it gives us alot of freedom for creative thinking so i am sure there will come a lot of very impressive entries for this.

I am blasting through mine, sorry about no covers, that's one hell of a contest, huh? I think it would be one thing if  it was a VoidCity comic, because we know what's in it, but otherwise.. I'd say we either do something with the cover along the lines of "Black Stripes", or we can use a scene from one of our comics. Mine features the Bolivian Salt Flats, so maybe we could do an image of that? Or We could have it being All white with one Black stripe going down it and anyone can do that.

We are all counting on you. Cover design is crucial in capturing interest on a con table or on a shelf. But its hard to make an anthology cover when its not based on known quantities or properties and the theme is so amorphously sublime.

The trouble is we need a designer- of which we possess dreadfully few of here- for an anthology that covers the sum total of the works contained or at least pertains to the premise. Perhaps knowing the content would allow the artist to give that form.

For everyone doing comics for it, self included perhaps include a mission statement for your story so anyone doing covers has some conception to go on. Charlie did a great job on the last Anthology cover, keep it up- the more the merrier. I can only theorize but lack the technology to make something suitably sleek.

Working on one. Don't ask what the fuck is going on, I am doing something with no reasoning to it.

I want it to be a wrap, so two questions -

1) are we putting text or something on the back?

2) I almost think this should wait 'till the book is put together...for a wrap we need to know what the spine will be like :O!

So to clarify, the deadline for the covers is the same as the book itself now.  February 1st will be last call for all material.  Remember, that even if you don't win this contest, your art will be featured in the book so your effort won't be in vain.  Draw on!
