Character Practice jam

Character Practice jam
« on: Jul 31, 2010, 01:01 PM »
I was reading through Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics as well as Making Comics and one chapter I remembered in particular was about creating a character. It went through things like habits characters may have, certain quirks that make them unique, etc. etc. etc. which made me think of making this jam.

Anyways, the point of this jam is to practice working with your character, which sounds pretty straight forward I know haha. Maybe you feel like all the characters you write are the same or they don't stand out or maybe wonder how they would react in certain situations. The point of this jam is to just have fun and mess around and maybe improve with your writing, perhaps find ways to make your characters and environments unique.

The only rules are

1.no porn
2. MUST BE IN COMIC FORMAT!
Does not have to be Void related unless you want it to be!

It doesn't have to involve Void characters, maybe you're doing a 1 shot and you have some new characters you wanna get some quick practice done on. It doesn't even have to involve 2 characters talking to one another, maybe you want to practice how they'd interact in a certain location. Or if you want to do Void related, oh you and so and so discussed battling maybe you wanna practice how they'd talk to one another.

This is a pretty open and vague jam, have fun with it, all you need to do is do it in a comic format!

Some Void comics to look at that have lots of fun character interaction going on

this is a pretty good idea! the only thing I gotta say is that why does it HAVE to be in comic format? I understand that would be the most obvious way to portray a character's personality, but a single image could work just as well as long as the character isn't just striking a random pose but actually does something.

Well I'm not so sure if a single panel would work out. If it's just one panel with the character alone, the things that Angie was trying to suppose probably wouldn't get through well. A one panel dialog scene I don't think would really help on character interaction, and I feel the jam should be about the character and all the elaborate things they might do, and how better to show that by doing little comics with em? Not to mention improve writing which sounds great.

This thread sounds like a great idea since I'd love to stretch my legs with some one shots I myself had in mind, I should really begin to stretch my legs with more human characters. Just one question, do you really insist no porn One shots really are allowed, like new characters never seen before? Like, throwaway characters we might never use again? I imagine they are but just wanted to be clear.

I hope this thread fills up quickly with everyone's creativity :u

Since there are so many jams where you can do just a single image, I felt it'd be more challenging for people to do a comic. It doesn't have to be a whole comic, just 2-3 panels is okay

I feel this is something that should be worked upon in every battle done on Void anyways...

but this is PRACTICE, and any practice is good practice :D

Yeah and you should be working on that in your battles. But sometimes it's just fun to fuck around and do a random comic without it being a battle, this jam is just here for fun. Now lets get some drawing done guys!

I'll make one... But Monday probably. I'd like to try to make it to round 2 of the tourney.

This is definitely an idea worth exploration. I am going to give it a try though in the current time frame there is still a lot of work to do on the normal comics. So in the in between weeks for the tourney I will have to work this out. :)

Here's to short short stories. :D

So I've had these characters scripted and written up for a webcomic forever, but I've never honestly drawn them in comic form. And since nobody else was doing this I figured I'd give it a shot. Just a little one pager, but it was fun to see the character's personalities finally out on paper.
