Like the proverbial citrus-based octo-phoenix of yore, Pulpo flies again!

If you plan to contribute, please let us know by sending an email to pulpo@ enterVOID.com.  We'll check in periodically with contributors to make sure things are progressing.  That email address can also be used for any questions you may have, though we're both reachable on other platforms as well.

Let's get started!

News & Events / Armageddon 2014
« on: Apr 07, 2014, 10:18 PM »
Round up the kids and lock your doors, it's ARMAGEDDON!

Armageddon is VOID's almost-annual event pitting a team of artists against a threat to the city.  AmazingDavid and TheAngie have created this year's threat - Bayou and Bog, two exiles from the future!  Learn more on their character profile or Intro Comic.

Details: 6 week drawing time, beginning May 1st
Threat: Bayou and Bog, by AmazingDavid and TheAngie (DavAngie)
Defenders: Six defenders will be chosen.

If you're interested in being a Defender for our fair city, against this combined threat, please declare it on or before April 27th by posting to this thread the character you would use.  The Council (not counting TheAngie herself) will then decide the chosen Defenders.

This is a collaborative event! The defenders' side MUST tell one cohesive story!

Regionals / C2E2 Anyone?
« on: Mar 25, 2014, 05:36 PM »
The past few years I've been opting for C2E2 over Wizard World Chicago... because Wizard World has been sucking and C2E2 is awesome and actually about comics (shock!).

This year, I'm supposed to be going to a bachelor party, though I don't know any details... like what state it's in.  So my plans are a bit up in the air, but I'm gonna try to get there.

Reviews / Toast Reviews Indy Books.
« on: Sep 15, 2013, 11:44 AM »
I've been doing reviews for a little while on my blog, writing something about the previous week's independent books because I think too much time is spent on superheroes.

The latest: http://eggsandjuice.blogspot.com/2013/09/indie-corner-09182013.html

New reviews weekly, plus sometimes other stuff.

Jobs / Novel Cover
« on: Jul 18, 2013, 04:56 PM »
I'm short on details, but a friend of a friend wrote a novel (urban fantasy/action/horror) and is looking for a cover artist.

I've asked for additional information (deadline, pay, character design, etc.), and will supply once known.

Anyone interested, please let me know and I'll pass you along.

News & Events / More 5.0 Transitioning
« on: Dec 23, 2011, 01:55 PM »
You may have noticed some changes around the site earlier today.

The Manager is now linked from the Forum menu.  I've removed most links to the main site Manager, as well as everyone's Hitlists.  Hitlists will now be linked to Forum profiles, and many already are, though that transition is still in process.  If anyone had a Hitlist on the main site that is not showing up under the new page, please let me know.  It's a simple fix.

These are the next steps of many more in the transition to VOID 5.0, for which I've spent a great deal of time laying the groundwork.  I'm taking our yearly slow period to try and minimize the bumps along the way, so please let me know if anything isn't working quite the way it should.

More to come soon.

News & Events / Seeking Think Tanks
« on: Mar 15, 2011, 10:16 PM »
I'm seeking people of the Think Tank position.  Figure it's time to get some new blood in there and mix things up a bit.

Two things:
The Think Tanks primary assignments are to generate ideas for site expansion, point out oversights on my part, form consensus on site direction, select participants for events, and sometimes handle communication (writing news, the DA/Facebook/Twitter accounts)... those sorts of things.
and
Volunteering does not necessarily mean you will be selected.  I aim for a good mix of opinion and personality between individuals.  Too many people all agreeing with each just isn't a good thing.  Similarly, too many people at each other's throats means nothing gets done.

Post below if interested.

Art Jams / The 5.0 Banners Submission Thread
« on: Mar 02, 2011, 05:15 AM »
Back in January, I put the call out to a number of people to create new banner art for VOID's upcoming design.  The message below is that original email, and I now extend that request for art to the community as a whole:

I'm currently well into development of VOID version 5.0.  The big change this time around will be the unification of both the forum and main site into a single entity (along with a whole slew of other stuff).  No longer will the site be two separate logins, layouts, or designs, but everything under one roof.

Another piece of the redesign will be to bring the rotation of header art back to the main site.  We've had Andre's pretty face on the main site for all of 4.0, but it's time for something new.  Unfortunately, (or fortunately, depending on your opinion of the current crop) the current header art on the forum can't be used due to the new site being wider, and the fact that the VOID crest will be laid on top of the headers.

The specs for the new headers are 990px wide by 200px tall.  However, please be aware the crest is 300px by 200px and will take up the rightmost area.  It's more-or-less an oval, so the crest will not take up the entire 300x200 rectangle.  Examples of the layout and crest placement on existing headers are linked below for additional clarification.

Examples:

In each of the examples, the crest now covers an area of art... not acceptable.

"VOID" or "EnterVOID.com" are optional.  It's unnecessary to include "Impact is Immenent" or the VOID logo.  Also, do not include the crest, as this is a separate file that will be floating above the header image.

Please send any completed art back to me.  Color is preferred, though you may send pencils or inks if you prefer someone else to color.  Secrecy is not necessary, as any finished art may be posted to your individual websites.

I'm sending this email to some of my closest friends and greatest artists VOID has produced.  If you're able to contribute once again to a community that still loves you, you'll have my eternal thanks.  If not, that's perfectly understandable.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

My thanks,
Kevin Birtcher

News & Events / Heavyweight Tournament 2011
« on: Feb 05, 2011, 04:24 PM »
Our fair site weathers all storms, but as we clock in a new decade, VOID City needs a Champion.  Such a Champion can only be decided in the most ancient of tournaments.  Only one, amongst all others, that can truly claim to be...

THE 2011 HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION!

The Heavyweight Tournament, not seen since 2005, is the very first Tournament EnterVOID.com ever held, to determine the best of the best.

“This title sounds like a pretty big thing. What's it all about?”

So many of our tournaments end in death for all characters except the sole survivor to make it to the end and claim the prize.  In practice, this overwhelmingly means the creation of new characters, so as not to put everyone's most precious creations to the axe.

The Heavyweight Tournament is different because it does not end in death at the end of each round, and is specifically for everyone to use their 'main' characters instead of creating new ones.  Characters we've all witnessed grow and evolve over the years, now pitted against one another until one stands above all others.

“So--"

But wait, there's more...

The winner of the 2011 Heavyweight Tournament will earn the permanent title of 2011 Heavyweight Tournament Champion, but also be granted a secondary title of Heavyweight Champion.  Following the tournament, this second title of Heavyweight Champion can be earned by any contender who manages to best the current Champion and title holder, passing from one artist to the next for years to come.

“Can even I, the lowly newbie scrub, enter?"

This tournament is open to everyone with an active character on the site, though there will be a selection process involving the Council and Think Tanks to determine slots.  Whether you've got 1 or 100 fights under your belt, all living characters are welcome to sign up!

“Good Golly, Miss Molly! I've gotta get in on this!”

Well good news! You've got until the 13th of February until Sign-Ups end! So shake out those drawing muscles and get ready for a fight!

“Anything else I should know?”

Each round will have a two-week drawing period, with three page minimum, and Round One begins 02/14.  NOW STOP ASKING QUESTIONS AND SIGN UP BELOW WITH YOUR CHARACTER OF CHOICE.  ...all right, you can still ask questions.

News & Events / Intro Stories as Beyond Battles
« on: Dec 02, 2010, 07:22 PM »
You may have noticed Casino Reasoning's approval came with an added bonus: his Intro became a Beyond Battle.
http://entervoid.com/comic.php?id=2998

This is an idea I had a few months ago, but recently resurfaced when I begin to redesign the way characters are displayed on the main site.

I wanted to not only draw extra attention to new characters, but include Intro Stories as part of a character's comic archive.  Additionally, this has the benefit of acclimating new artists to the process of voting and receiving feedback.  It's a benefit lost on those those creating 2nd or 3rd characters, but obviously there's a learning curve for those new to the site and should give 'em all the help we can.

Clearly, I think it's a good idea, because I wouldn't have done it otherwise.  But I'm hoping you think it's a good idea as well.

I'll be processing existing characters and back-dating their own Beyond Battle Intro comics (for those that have them) just as soon as I perfect the script.

GO FOR BROKE! / Colorist Needed for New Ongoing
« on: Oct 08, 2010, 05:30 AM »
Ponbiki and I are working on a new ongoing comic together, but are in need of a colorist.

I've included a sample page below (if anyone needs a higher-res version: click here ~6MB)

For those interested, please color and repost, or email to mechatoast@gmail.com

As for details on the scene itself... it's a desert, around Noon.  You can color the main guy however you'd like.

Please note: We can't pay, but maybe down the line once it's collected and up for sale

Speed Death Tournament, 2010 Edition

The Speed Death Tournament is easily one of the most requested tournaments around here, with Armageddon it's only closest competitor.  So we're giving you what you've longer for - a new Speed Death Tournament, beginining February 1st.

The Details:

* Applications will be taken until January 29th.
* Final artist selection will be announced January 31st.
* Round One will begin February 1st.
* Each round will be one week for drawing, one week for voting.
* All Matches are DEATH matches... thus the "Death" in Speed Death Tournament
* 3 page minimum per comic
* Intention of joining can and should be made below, but all Applications will need to submit their character through the Main Site by January 29th, at the latest.
* Not meeting requirements will result in automatic disqualification from the tournament for the Artist as well as the chance to be shamed by all of their peers.

Artists will be selected from Applicants by Council Majority Vote and placed into matches randomly.

The tournament winner will have the title of 'Speed Death Tournament Champion 2010' added to his/her character profile on the Main Site as well as the great relief of surviving many harrowing rounds against tough competition.

FOR THOSE NEW TO SDT:
Speed Death Characters only require a Design Sheet and Bio, but do not require an Intro.  Since the uploader will not let you pass without Intro images, please use the Design Sheet for all fields.

Most people create a new character for Death tournaments, though existing characters are fine as well.

Applicants apply below with Artist Name, Character Name and Character Thumbnail.

Art Jams / Create-a-Button
« on: Jul 27, 2009, 04:54 PM »
The Button Store has been doing well, but I'm certain many of you want to see more designs.

With that in mind, I give you the template to create your own buttons:
http://entervoid.com/images/template.psd

What you need to know:
Anything inside the Inner Circle will be on the face of the button, anything between the Inner and Outer Circle will be on the button's edge (typically art bleed, but URLs fit well here)

Once complete, save the file and send it back [emai=toast@entervoid.coml]to me[/email]

Feel free to save a JPG to post here and build hype for your design.

Full credit will be given to any artist whose design(s) we use.

Since the margins on these are small, we can't offer you money from sales, but we will ensure artists will receive a set of their button once a batch has been created.

Not every submitted design can be used, but we will try to use them all.

Post any questions below.

News & Events / Serious Business Tournament
« on: Apr 18, 2009, 10:21 AM »
In a small-scale imitation of the real-world pitching process...

Serious Business Tournament

Artists will compete indirectly with one another through the use of One-Shot comics (think: Beyond Battles for artists, not characters).

Those interested will need to develop a pitch for a three-act comic.  Each act will be a separate round of the tournament, which will see half the participants removed following each round.  Only the two best artists will complete their pitched storyline in Round Three.

Private message pitches to myself, Wei, and Angie to keep your ideas private.  The three of us will then distribute the pitches to the rest of the staff for selection.

An 8 slot tourney completed over 3 rounds. Round One will consist of each artist beginning their story.  Following each round, the lower half of the participants will be eliminated, based on scores earned.  Round Two will see the surviving four artists continue their story, with only the top two remaining artists in Round Three to complete their story.  Any artist eliminated from the Tournament can continue his or her story through non-tournament comics.

Add that there goddamn WILL be a prize given to the winner, and a runner up prize to all participants who continue and totally finish their entries. You have my word on this one. - Jack

Details:

* Applications begin now, continue through 04/25
* Selection ends 04/26
* Round One beginning 04/27
* Each round will have two weeks drawing time.
* 4 page minimum
* Comic MUST follow the story pitch within the application.
* Not meeting requirements will result in automatic disqualification from Tourney for the Artist as well as the chance to be shamed by all of their peers.

Artists will be selected from Applicants by majority vote among the VOID Staff.

The Winner will have the Title of 'Serious Business Winner 2009' added to his/her profile on the Main Site.

Artists can state or revoke their intent to participate below, but we will need still need a pitch PM'd as well.
i.e.....Elio
