I didn't see anything in Denzel's abilities beyond standard action-movie suspension of disbelief stuff. Also the guy senselessly kills and maims enough people to make him unsuitable as a model of Christian behavior, I would hope.

But I don't know I guess it can be read as a more religious story than I thought? I like it as a secular thing about knowledge and freedom and stuff. I don't think it has anything to say about God, and if it makes any argument for Christianity it went over my head.

I rather liked Book of Eli; was prepared to hate it. SPOILERS FOLLOW if you care.

Jack- It's not really about religion and it makes no claims about God or belief-- it's about literacy and how important it is for everyone in a functioning society to have access to all information. Gary Oldman's character was going to use the bible to rule people, in much the way that religion has been used to rule people throughout history-- by keeping the religious texts themselves unavailable to the public, and with them literacy and the capacity for free thought on the issue. Development of the printing press and widespread literacy changed this more than anything else-- that is why the printing press at the end of the movie is so significant.

It's about culture and literacy and keeping information freely available. The fact that the book is the bible is ONLY significant for the historical echoes. Speaking as an atheist with a fair bit of contempt for much of organized religion, I enjoy the movie and I think the message in it is pretty important. It's CRITICAL of Christianity, if anything-- Oldman's character highlights many of the social problems Christianity/religion has caused.

Yeah the dialogue was pretty lame and melodramatic, but I figure that's about par for the course as far as action movies are concerned these days.

No no no, no one should draw from this posemaniacs.com shit. Draw from life. People are three-dimensional and they don't look like those weird clumsy CG dolls.

Also Lune I know what you mean about being scared of making something that looks stupid. I was really uptight about that when I was drawing comics for void, when everything had to be badass-looking and I didn't feel comfortable playing around. I think it is important to get over that one way or another though.

7
These are really good and I'm happy you're making them. Your work has always been impressive but I do think you could benefit from more technical skill in this area.

For working out how to draw what you see, it's been helpful to me to draw quick and large. Life drawing sessions often begin with a series one or two-minute long poses for gesture drawing. Recording these quickly and loosely, and trying to draw the entire figure at once instead of dwelling on parts of it, will teach you a lot, I think. You obviously have the later stages (developing and rendering the image) well taken care of, but one of the trickiest parts is that initial loose stage where you lay the foundation for all of that development.

Hope that helps. These look really good.

Oh my gosh the Snow Crash ones are PERFECT! Excellent costume design; they really fit the tone of the book.

Why are you sticking to the same color scheme for all of these?

Everyone must read Death Day right now:

THERE IS NO EXCUSE.

I think using a Plain Jane san-serif font is a very good choice for subtitles; it is clearest, and I don't think it's the place of subtitle font to convey mood. It is not about being cool; Papyrus looks like it belongs on a fifth-grader's science project on the pyramids. This is a fact. I don't think they could've done worse in terms of subtitle font choice. F.

i love font arguments

also the first page from a new short comic

oh i know bad decision!

It is a terribly ugly font and not legible enough to justify use in subtitles. I have no idea why they would've made that decision! also it is kind of a joke in the font-snob community to make fun of it all the time.

Thanks guys I am super happy with the poster thing too.

Also the guest page isn't really a joke; just sort of a little playful character piece? I read through the whole archives and came up with that idea of how to play with two characters. But yes it's a haiku: a piece of poetry where the lines have 5, 7, 5 syllables.

I was extremely impressed by Avatar; mostly because I love all of the worldbuilding stuff. The story was anything but original, yeah-- I read a review comparing it to the first Star Wars: groundbreaking, incredible special effects, a well-executed but very tired story, and awful awful dialogue.

Drew this a little while ago:

Printing and selling a poster sometime soon, in January, to correspond with having 1000 pages on the site. Also! I made a video of me drawing it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1pdtJOilrw

and! I recently drew a guest page for Dave Shabet's excellent character study in a zombie apocalypse, Dead Winter ( http://deadwinter.cc/ )

24
Have not seen the movie, but the story is set in New Orleans, so some seriously awkward acrobatics would have to be performed in order to avoid any acknowledgement of race, I think. It has always been a part of the country with some very self-evident messed-up race relations.

Jack has a good point about this-- Disney deals with minority characters as protagonists and everybody is up in arms about how racist the portrayals are. This is more indicative of racism still latent in cultural thinking at large, than of anything on Disney's part.

Put up a new short story! I've posted a few pages from it here before. I'm doing a donation-based thing; whenever donations meet a certain goal, a new story will be posted. Seems to be working well so far? I have to draw a new story now, though.
