haha on the panels that never work I'm guilty of 2 of them. To be fair, my use of #3 was early in my Void career so I was young and stupid. #4 I don't feel so bad about because it's cooler than the Kubo Tite method of having someone appear flying behind someone's shoulder

Kelly Sue DeConnick is currently the writer for Captain Marvel.  And endearingly, she currently has a tumblr project with a little girl named Winter.  They agreed to do a comic together.  Winter supplied the ideas, DeConnick writes the script and Winter draws.  But wait!  They have invited anyone to join in the fun.  You can read the details here and begin drawing the Ninja Princess Zombie Rockstar adventures:

film language basics. a lot of pretty simple stuff you might already know, but it's always good for a refresher.

the sooner you start approaching your comics as films (or vice versa), the more tools you'll have available to you to tell your stories.

he mentions it briefly, but if you can get your hands on the hollywood camera work series (here) or the hot moves: the science of awesome spin-off (here), they are among some of the best resources on visual storytelling available right now.

This is a pretty cool mashup and juxtaposition of photos from the classic San Francisco earthquake and modern day SF.  Aside from being pretty cool art by itself, I feel like this can serve as reference/inspiration:

This is a very interesting article called How NOT to Write Comics Criticism.  The title is in reference to a three part series called How NOT to Write Comics which is equally interesting and may be of interest to all and is linked at the top of this article:

http://www.dylanmeconis.com/how-not-to-write-comics-criticism/

Really it's all about what comics are, the cliches people should avoid and probably most importantly, what a graphic novel actually is (hint: It's a comic).  Some of this may sound pretentious or trying to elevate comics to a scholarly level and God forbid, an artform, but it's an interesting read, give it a chance in your spare time.  In the past, I've heard Voiders come at the idea of comics from all sorts of angles so I'd staple this to their faces if I could.

http://www.comicsalliance.com/2012/10/26/women-of-marvel-panel-new-york-comic-con-2012/

Though I did not go to any panels while I was there, it seems that this one was truly excellent and it brings up a number of interesting points.

They mention that there are plenty of women colorists and editors rather than the more 'notable' positions of penciller/inker and writer.  That women seem more willing to fill the 'unsung hero' positions than males because "men want to be rockstars".  It makes me think of our members like Angieness so I couldn't help but bring it up.

And a second point that is personal to me is about how unwelcoming comic shops tend to be to female shoppers.  I have never been witness to this because the place I shop is a wonderful hangout spot that welcomes all ages and genders or whatever and is frequented by a wide spectrum of people.  So I'm a little proud that my favorite spot is the exception to the rule.

Yeah, I hadn't noticed there were so many female colorists until a client asked me why most good colorists are female. I don't really know the answer to it as I just really like to color. It can be nice pretty much not being the rock star because there's less pressure. Colorists typically aren't even credited on the cover of the book so people don't notice us as much, which can be good or bad. (we're typically not blamed if a comic turns out badly)

I've never experienced any problems at comic stores, but then again most comic stores I visit have female staff so it's not shocking that a female would go in there.

Most jobs I've had I was the only girl on the book but there are two big exceptions.

TMNT Micro Series April-Marley was actually the first female to draw a TMNT book to my knowledge. Aside from the editor and I think the letterer, it was an all female staff with Barbara Kesel as the writer, Marley as the penciler/inker, and me as the colorist. The colorist on the main TMNT series right now is also a female. (another similar tidbit is I think Becky Cloonan was the first female to draw a Batman book which just happened a few months ago. Not 100% sure on this one but that's what I've heard)

My Little Pony:FIM-the staff is about half women. Katie Cook is the writer and I'm the colorist. Can't remember who the letterer is on this one.

In general IDW seems to be pretty good about having female staff on board.

So there was a study done on body diversity and how seeing various body shapes affect our perception.  It's an interesting study and all but this is an art website so I'm more interested in reference material.  So here you go, there's an interesting image at the top of this article:
http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2012/11/09/164789823/how-changing-visual-cues-can-affect-attitudes-about-weight?live=1%3Futm_source%3DNPR&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=20121109

And the study itself is interesting and mentions places to find references (like Miss England 2007 or Plus Size Next magazine, etc.) http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0048691#s4

I was looking for a reference photo on google and my mouse went crazy so I have no idea what I even clicked but suddenly I was on this blog and I thought people might find it useful! It features a lot of examples of environment and architectural drawing in comics. http://architectureandcomics.blogspot.co.uk/

So I'm not sure if you guys are aware of this Kickstarter or the drama that surrounded this but to give the gist of it:
So Alex deCampi and Jimmy Broxton were working on the sequel to her book entitled Smoke and in order to fund it went to Kickstarter.  There it became the sixth most well funded project and operated on a premise of complete and open honesty of where all the funds were going and what not.  Shortly after, deCampi fired Broxton and the project turned into a shitstorm.  It turned into a he said/she said debate between two highly respected people with good reputations mudslinging each other.  I just wanted to point this out because there's so much known about it that it really highlights the creative and collaborative process and how it can fail.  To be honest this highlights my own fear and trepidation about collabs and basically why I don't do them.

But it's really interesting to read:
