What is EnterVOID?

Basics of VOID

Our goal is to provide an environment for prospective comic artists to sharpen their artistic and story-telling abilities through sequential art (or comics) and fair and honest competition with their peers. Our site provides what has been dubbed at times an "arena" or "battle ground" for up-and-coming young talent to display their skills and refine their art.

To participate in comic battles, you must first get your character approved, then you are free to challenge other artists. You can read more about this process below.

Do I need to be an artist to use the site?

No. Non-artists are very welcomed to read the comics, comment, and vote. Writers have also teamed up with artists to create comics.

How do I get my character approved?

When you are developing your character, we strongly suggest you post what you have in the incubator section of the forum before actually submitting. This lets us work out any problems before you submit.

To submit a character, log in, go to the Manager, click on Create a Character, complete the form, and upload your submission.

A character submission consists of a design sheet, a 2-4 page comic that introduces us to your character, a biography, and an icon.

Design Sheet

The design sheet is the only part of your submission that MUST be in color. This will serve as a reference for other artists when drawing your character. It is strongly suggested that you draw your character in a static standing pose. If your character is complex, please include multiple angles, including a back shot. Be sure to include any tiny details that your character has, such as tattoos, special eye color, weapons, etc. if necessary.

2-4 Page Comic

The intro comic can be between 2-4 pages long. This short comic will help us get a better feel for your character's personality, powers, and backstory.

Biography

A short summary of your character. We recommend making this brief and informative.

Icon

A 50x50 pixel icon that will be used to represent your character.

The approval Process

EnterVOID has a standard of quality for their approved submissions. Sloppy, and unfinished is not acceptable. A basic knowledge of anatomy, backgrounds and perspective, and comic structure is required. "Fan characters" and other submissions that infringe on copyrights are not allowed. Please take your time with your submission, and ask for help in the incubator.

The approval committee will review your submission and make a decision.

What kinds of characters and comics can I submit?

Characters cannot be "fan characters" or infringe on copyrighted material. Other than that, there are no requirements.

Characters can also be groups of characters, but they are still considered to be a single character. For example, Phillips Household is actually made up of 3 individuals, but they are considered a single character. Their design sheet also shows all 3 individuals.

Comic Setting

VOID City is the setting for most of the comics drawn on VOID. It is in no way a requirement in your comics. Your comics can take place wherever you would like.

Over the years people have added locations, NPCs, city events and disasters. Feel free to use these in your comics, or make up your own. Draw VOID city in whatever way you imagine it being. Or don't draw it at all ... completely up to you!

How do I make VOID comics?

Issuing a Challenge

Issuing a challenge to a fellow artist is simple. In the Manager, look under the Comics section and click "View/Issue Challenges." From there, select an opponent from the list of eligible characters or artists, select the comic type, length of drawing time, and include an optional personal comment. Once done, click "Challenge!" and await a response.

From this page, you will be able to see all Open Challenges, as well as personal challenges you have sent or received.

Accepting and Declining Challenges

Look under the "Comics" options on your Manager page and click "View/Issue Challenges." From here, you will see an area designated for "Open Challenges." Any challenge you receive will show up here, and give you the option to Accept or Decline.

Declining a challenge will alert the challenging artist that you do not wish to participate, so be sure that is the option you want before choosing.

Accepting, however, will lock you in "battle," and you will have the amount of time designated to finish the challenge, starting from the moment you accept.

Comic Requirements

The only requirement when drawing comics for VOID, is that you must include your opponent's character in your comic. If you fail to do this, your comic will not be posted, resulting in an automatic loss.

It is a common misconception that your character must actually battle their opponent. Any genre of comic is welcomed on VOID, including fighting, slice of life, drama, and comedy. Feel free to draw your comic however you'd like.

Uploading your comic

Once completed, go to your manager, comics, and submit a comic. Click on the appropriate match, and upload your pages.

What are the different comic types on VOID?

Regular Match

A regular match has no special requirements.

Scar Match

These matches give you the opportunity to change your opponent's design. The loser of a scar match must receive a "scar" from their opponent, as described in the winning comic. The winner of scar matches escape unaltered. The only rule is that your opponent must be depicted receiving a scar in your comic.

Losers of scar matches MUST update their character's design sheet to reflect their new look before using that character again.

Double Scar Match

The double scar match changes both characters' design sheets as depicted in the winner's comic. BOTH characters must be depicted receiving a scar in the comic.

Death Match

The riskiest match on VOID. Characters who lose a death match can no longer be used. Each death match comic must show the opponent's character dying in some way, or the comic will be counted as a default. Proceed with caution!

Tournament Matches

VOID usually has a few tournaments per year. Tournaments can range from intense 1 week death matches with one survivor, an 8-way scar match, themed character death matches, to the Heavyweight Champion matches. Winners of tournaments receive a title for the tournament they have won.

Users are encouraged to create their own events as well. Information about the current events can be found on the forum.

Sparring Matches

These matches do not result in a win or loss. Good for mutual story progression, practice, or exhibition.

Artist Matches

These matches do NOT involve your characters. Your comic can be about whatever you want. You and your opponent are welcomed to set a theme for your artist match, but it is not necessary.

Beyond Battles

These solo comics let you progress your character's story without an opponent.

What should I do if my pages won't upload or there is an error?

The first thing you should do is tell someone. If there are no pages uploaded at the deadline of a comic and no one knows there is a technical issue, we will assume you've defaulted. The most common problem is that your pages are too large.

You can read more about uploading issues HERE.

How does voting work?

Every comic has 1 week of voting time. Registered users can vote on each comic in 3 different categories.

Quality

Ranging from 1-10, how did the comic look? Was the comic finished? Did the artist take the time to make sure everything was clean and professional looking?

Creativity

Ranging from 1-10, how creative was this comic? Did it surprise you? Did you think the writing was clever and different?

Entertainment

Ranging from 1-10, how entertained were you? Did the comic make you laugh or cry? Were you on the edge of your seat with suspense?

All votes are monitored for cheating. Unfair votes (such as giving a person all 10's, and their opponent all 1's) are not tolerated. Voting privileges will be revoked for those who cannot follow the rules.

What are the rules of VOID?

EnterVOID is a competition site, so we like to keep things fair with a simple set of rules.

1. When participating in a comic battle, all involved characters must be drawn in a comic for it to be posted. Failure to include your opponent(s) in a comic will result in an immediate default. Drawing opponents in a "cover" or promo style image does not count.

2. Character designs or comics cannot violate copyrights. Parodies are acceptable, but all content is subject to review by the council.

3. Comic drawing deadlines are final. Any content uploaded or emailed to admins after the deadline is not valid.

4. Once posted for voting, you cannot change your comic or alter any pages in any way.You may over-write what you have uploaded as many times as you want before the deadline.

5. Any vote that is considered unfair or a "cheat vote" will be removed. Cheating is not tolerated and will result in removal or voting privileges, or a ban.

6. Dead characters cannot participate in normal matches, unless a special event which allows them to is occurring when the battle begins (Month of the dead). Dead characters CAN participate in beyond battles.

7. Characters that have lost a scar match cannot enter another battle until their design sheet has been updated to reflect the new changes.

8. Harassment, or hateful language is not tolerated. Harassment of other members will result in a ban.

9. Art and stories in comics must be your own, unless stated otherwise. Collaborative comics are allowed, but they must be set up that way. Your opponent MUST be aware if they are being challenged by a team or individual. Having someone thumbnail, pencil, ink, color, write, etc. without disclosing that information is considered cheating.

10. In order to cancel a battle, all artists involved MUST agree to the cancellation. All involved parties must inform a battle manager stating that they agree to cancel the battle.

We also have certain etiquette that we expect users to follow

Can I make my own event on VOID?

Users are welcomed to create their own special events on VOID, such as their own battle royale style tournament with a theme of their choice. You can invite people to participate, or leave it open for anyone to enter. We do request that you contact a council member to discuss the details before you start though. The reason is that we want to make sure that your event doesn't conflict with other major events, or breaks the rules in any way.

I need more time to draw my comic. What can I do?

VOID uses an automated extension system. Each time you complete a comic, you are awarded half an extension. This means you must complete two comics before you have earned an extension. To use an extension, look in the upper right hand corner below the deadline info in your battle and look for the button with the exclamation point in it.  A menu should pop up when you put your mouse over the button and there should be a link in there to extend your battle. You are allowed to extend your drawing time by one week.

You cannot use extensions on the last day of a match, on comics with one week drawing times, and on scar and death matches

Is there an official VOID canon storyline?

Not at all. Over the years, VOID creators have made NPC characters, places in VOID City, story lines that interact with many characters, and blown up the city. You do not have to use VOID City, but if you do, you can depict it in any way you would like. You are more than welcome to create your own story to fit in the VOID City story, or make up whatever you can imagine.

What else can I do on VOID?

EnterVOID has a great community of people from all over the world! We have a forum with art jams, VOID University, and a place to just talk. We also have a chatroom, a deviantart, a Facebook, a twitter, and a tumblr. We also have a weekly podcast about the site!

We frequently meet up at conventions, and even publish our own anthologies.
