Alternative Press Expo aka tha thrilla in vinyalla aka the APE ESCAPE aka Comic City Block Party aka Sweet Ink Sludgetown aka I wish I was Big Ghost but I'm not as good at this shit as he is, IS OPENING BADGE SALES.
Tables are once again expensive as a mofo, and you will have had to had wrestled everyone in the wait list line with your teeth if you want one.
However I highly recommend at least going to APE if you want to see all of the freshest that the Bay has to offer in comics and craft (and more--them Nor'Westers keep creeping in on us year after year.) GIANT ROBOT, Last Gasp, FANTAGRAPHICS, SLG, Cartoon Art Museum, Image, they're all here.
Featured this year at APE are:
Colleen Coover, Eisner Award-winning artist and co-creator (with husband Paul Tobin) of Bandette
Bill Griffith, the legendary creator of Zippy the Pinhead
Anders Nilsen, author and artist of the graphic novels Big Questions, The End, and Dogs and Water, among others.
Diane Noomin, creator of DiDi Glitz and editor of the Twisted Sisters anthologies of women cartoonists.
Raina Telgemeier, the author and illustrator of the graphic novels Smile and Drama, both #1 New York Times bestsellers.
Paul Tobin, Eisner Award-winning writer and co-creator (with wife Colleen Coover) of Bandette
Ron Turner, Bay area comix and publishing legend behind Last Gasp
Dan Vado, SLG Publshing head and APE founder
Also don't forget to stop by ZEBRATRON's booth, as they have the greatest setups.
This will be the last year APE is held at the concourse. Every year, it gets bigger and bigger, so it's gonna be moving on to a new home next year. Catch it now before it goes!
