Art Jams / Pokemon December Challenge
« on: Nov 18, 2013, 05:53 PM »

Anyone else doing this? I'm going to attempt to if things don't get too crazy on my end. Pretty much you draw a Pokemon for each of those days. I know a few Voiders are doing this, so this topic might help people keep up with it!

VOID University / Void U Battle Challenge 1:3 page comic
« on: Nov 16, 2013, 11:05 AM »
I've decided to start a new type of Void U Theme that you guys can apply to your battles! The way this works is once a month I'm going to post a new battle challenge. You don't have to specifically start a new battle in order to do this, you can apply it to any battle you're currently doing, your opponent isn't obligated to participate unless they want to. (if they do want to, let me know and I'l list the whole battle) All you have to do is let me know you're going to take part in the challenge and I'll add you to the list! If you'd like to keep it a secret from your opponent, just PM me and I'll put (hidden) under the signups to keep your identity secret.

VOID U Battle U Challenge 1:3 Page Comic

There has been a tooooon of comics lately where people are doing long comics and aren't finishing them. I totally get it, I do long stories myself, but I think it's important to know your limits and challenge yourself to do a short comic from time to time. One of the hardest things to do is do a complete story in a small amount of pages! So I challenge all of you to try to do a comic that is no longer than 3 pages. (page stacking is cheating and won't count. Double spreads count as 2 pages) This is actually the perfect time of year to get a short comic in with the holidays coming up! This can be applied to a regular battle, artist battle, beyond battle, doesn't matter!

There is no deadline! You guys are free to do this challenge when you like. But obviously the sooner the better so you don't forget this exists.

spit spat, time to chat / Manga Studio is Cheap Again!
« on: Sep 26, 2013, 02:16 PM »
Apparently Smith Micro is doing a crazy sale again, so for 4 days they have Manga Studio 4 EX for sale for $30.

http://my.smithmicro.com/landing/bundlesale/index.html?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=SMBundle20130910

They have Poser and Anime Studio up too but I don't care about those. If you draw digitally, it's far superior to Sai and Photoshop in terms of crispness and line quality.

The program is slowly becoming an industry standard, so I highly recommend it if you're a digital artist!

Want to make a living off of art? Despite what your parents, friends, etc. may have told you, you can indeed make a living drawing! Nowadays it's becoming increasingly rare that you can get any sort of full time work as an artist. Even animation, gaming, graphic design, comic, etc. companies primarily use freelancers.

I have only recently started to make a living on comics, so I'm no expert. I'll definitely give some tips, but this is mostly going to be a list of links pointing you to information that should be helpful. Feel free to share any links you find that are helpful, and I'll add them to their designated area!

News & Events / Month of the Dead 10/1-10/31!
« on: Sep 20, 2013, 08:14 AM »
Month of the Dead 2013

The dead have begun to rise out of their graves once more! Former champions, SDT combatants, throw away characters, and more have clawed their way from the ground to terrorize Void City until All Hallow's Eve!

What does this all mean?! If you're new to Void, the Month of the Dead is a magical event that allows you to use dead characters to battle. So if you lost a character during a death match or a tournament, you will be permitted to use them during the entire month of October!

How does this all work?!
All dead characters are resurrected, so you don't have to do anything special to set up a battle!

Can I death match or scar match a dead character?
No, that would be dumb. If it happens, the battle will be cancelled without warning. Even if both characters are already dead, you can't "double die". It's happened in the past and it's not happening this year. Same for scar matches, if there's no risk, there's no point. You're more than welcome to kill or maim your opponent in a battle, but it won't be canon.

Does the battle have to end in October?
Nope! We do expect people to be reasonable and keep battles to ending no later than November 15th. We totally understand things happen, this is to just keep people from trying to slide in with challenges on October 31st with 4 week deadlines. MOTD battles ending past November 15th will be cancelled.

What happens if the characters are still alive after the 31st? Can I still battle if someone forgot to kill the dead characters?
No. If for any reason someone forgets to turn MOTD off, I will be cancelling any battles that shouldn't exist without warning. Don't try to be slick.

Do I need to sign up to participate?
Nope! Challenge whoever you like!

Have fun! Try not to cause too much carnage!

News & Events / EnterVOID Anthology Volume 2
« on: Jul 23, 2013, 10:59 PM »
It's that time again! The EnterVOID Anthology Volume 2 is now underway! Haven't heard of it? The Anthology is our new annual physical comic focusing on Void City and all our favorite characters!

If you missed out on checking the first volume out, you can purchase it both physically and digitally at
http://indyplanet.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=7286
http://graphicly.com/entervoid/entervoid-anthology

Requirements

1.Your entry must be Void related, meaning you're going to be using your character. The actual setting is up to you, so don't worry about it taking place in Void City. Alive or dead characters are allowed!

2.It must be a stand alone comic and must be something new, so no old battles. You are more than welcome to include bonus material like battle pages or pin ups, but it must be in addition to your comic.

3.If you are going to feature anyone else's characters, such as cameos. You must get their consent and info on getting that done is below in the copyright junk section.

4.Entries must be finished. Unfinished/obviously half assed entries will be declined.

5.Anyone who is a Voider that has done a comic on the site can submit and you won't be declined if you're not the best artist on the site. All that I ask is the entries be completed and are of equal quality to your battles.

6.No comic sans or unreadable text allowed. Anyone that uses comic sans or difficult to read text will get declined. You can find good fonts for free at http://blambot.com Digitally lettered pages are preferred so you can edit any typos and such down the line.

On that note, please have someone proofread your pages! If your comic is a grammar/spelling nightmare, I'm making you redo your lettering. It makes your entry look bad.

7.There will be a 3 page minimum, no maximum. But remember quality over quantity. A crappy 50 page entry isn't getting used.

8.No pornographic content This is due to Kablam, the printer, not allowing it. Not because we're no fun poo poo heads.

Technical Info

-printing will be done through http://ka-blam.com/printing/front/ and http://www.indyplanet.com/store/
-Black and White is accepted
-Color is accepted but it must be done in RGB (this is Ka-blam's standard)
-The book will be standard 7X10.5, however the "live area" as in area that won't get cropped is 6.25X9.75, Ka-blam has a handy template at http://ka-blam.com/printing/front/?p=119 if the template confuses you http://ka-blam.com/printing/index.php?page=Specs_comics should clear anything up
http://ka-blam.com/printing/front/?p=549 for double spreads
anything that doesn't fit in the template might get cropped. So double check all your pages to ensure they fit Ka-blam's template! I won't be fixing anyone's entries!
-All files must be 300 dpi. No more, no less. (beware of this if you work in Sai as it occasionally messes up dpi from Sai to Photoshop)
-All files must be saved as a .tif with LZW compression.
-All files must follow this naming format yourvoidnamepagenumber. For example, my submission would be angieness1.tif, angieness2.tif and such. No exceptions.
-Please include a page with any bio info/website info/credits you would like to have at the end of your entry

If you have any print specific questions, definitely check out Ka-blam's FAQ at http://ka-blam.com/printing/front/?cat=5

Deadline
March 1st, 2014 no exceptions
All entries must be sent to angieness@gmail.com by that deadline to be considered for print. Early submissions are welcome.

Copyright Junk/General Info

In order to give us the right to print something with your character, you will need to sign this form here.

www.hbreckelcolors.com/images/contractrough.pdf
(right click, save as)

If you cameo any character that does not belong to you, you must have them sign the form as well. This is to keep things from getting messy copyright wise. Once you sign the form, you give us the right to print your work and have your character featured. No take backs. You still retain all copyrights to your work and your character, Void nor Ka-blam nor Indyplanet will take the rights to your work away from you.

Absolutely no use of brands and such that do not belong to you is allowed. For example, you can't have Garfield drinking a can of Pepsi in your comic. Ka-blam actually declines comics for this.

As to where the money will be going, all proceeds will be going straight back to Void.

I've seen a few requests for tutorials done through Livestream, so I'm offering my services! They will unfortunately always be done on short notice because I never know if I'll get hit with a crunch time deadline, but if you miss one I intend on doing more of them so don't worry!

I will be doing livestreams on how to color, because that's what I do. These will be done in Photoshop so a basic understanding of the program will be needed, because I won't be taking time to explain everything about it.

I'm not the greatest at explaining things, but I'll do my best! You can brush up on coloring through my coloring tutorials here on the site too http://entervoid.com/index.php?topic=9939.0

The first How to Color Livestream takes place today Friday May 31st at 8 PM Eastern Time.
(if for any reason it needs canceled, I'll update the topic)

You'll be able to watch it here!
http://www.livestream.com/angiecolors?t=277974

I believe livestream has the ability to watch old videos, so if you miss it you can still watch it later.

Collaborations / How This Section Works
« on: Apr 12, 2013, 11:59 AM »
If you would like to set up any sort of collaboration whether it be for a collab beyond battle on EnterVOID or are just looking for someone to work with outside of Void, this is the place to do it!

If you're wanting to set up a collab BB with someone on EnterVOID, please list what character you're looking to work with (if you're not wanting to do an artist BB)

Please list what roles you are looking to perform in the collab.  For example:

"I am looking to do a collab BB with someone using the character Angela Rudell. I am interested in coloring and inking."

This section will likely be mostly unpaid work. Please mention if money is at all involved.

Jobs / How to Advertise for Commissions
« on: Apr 12, 2013, 11:51 AM »
In addition to people looking to hire artists, you are also free to advertise that you are looking for work on this board. If you would like to advertise that you are open for commissions, comic work, etc. feel free to do so! But please 1 thread per person, any additional threads will be removed. In your commission thread please provide the following info

Examples of your work/what you are offering
How much you charge
ETA of the product. Please don't start a thread if you plan on taking more than a month to complete a piece for someone. (outside of comic work)
If you close your commissions, please update your thread to reflect that!

Again, it is not Void's responsibility if you get ripped off. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are paid. Please be smart and get half up front minimum and don't give anyone your hi res unwatermarked files until you have been paid in full.

Jobs / How the Jobs Section Works
« on: Apr 11, 2013, 11:29 PM »
This section was made in order to help out Voiders that are either looking for work, offering work, or simply looking for a collaborator for a project. Please try to provide the following information

-Will it be paid work/How much you are offering. Please include if it's an up front or back end deal, or if this is just a collaboration kind of thing for fun.

-If you're looking for an artist, please specify what you're looking for in terms of style.

-If you're looking for something like an inker or colorist, please provide lineart so people know what they'll be working on.

-Length of the job. ie Ongoing gig or simply 10 pages, etc.

-Deadline, if there is one.

Keep in mind, Void is not responsible if you get ripped off by someone! It is your responsibility to ensure you are paid! Be smart and take at least 1/2 up front and do not provide hi res files until you are paid in full! Watermark the crap out of your lo res previews if need be. I will remove obvious scams from the board, but if something doesn't sound right, don't take it!

An example of a potential scam is "I have been working on a manga and plan on becoming a famous mangaka. I know all sorts of anime producers and will get this made into an anime. I need an artist to make this manga happen! I will need a bunch of test images done from artists for free before deciding on an artist. I have 500 pages of background info provided here [link]"

News & Events / Web Comics on EnterVOID
« on: Apr 11, 2013, 12:18 PM »
Remember Voider Webcomics? Before 5.0, the website had a feature where Voiders could have their own web comic on the site with the help of Toast. When 5.0 came around, the feature was broken and everyone sort of forgot about the feature. But soon Voider webcomics will be making a comeback! I don't currently have an ETA at the moment, but Toast is working hard to bring the feature back to the website.

But why announce it if the feature isn't ready?

When the time comes, we want there to be a few titles to launch with. By telling you guys ahead of time, you guys can get some plotting done and get some pages ready for when the feature goes live.

What is this?

This is exactly what it sounds like. EnterVOID will be hosting your own web comic for you! At this time I'm not sure if people will be able to have their own website layout and stuff for it, but the comics will work like they already do on the main site like so http://entervoid.com/view.php?id=4554&side=1&iid=2

How does this differ from battling or beyond battles?

The biggest difference is these comics can't be voted on. They can however still be commented on!

How can I get this set up?

Like I said, the feature isn't available yet. But for when the feature goes live, we want to have some launch titles. The best way to get involved is to have buffer pages all ready to go! It would also be a good idea to get a story synopsis so you can "pitch" it to Toast.

How many pages should I have ready? How often should I update?
I would recommend at least 7 "buffer" pages. Now ideally you would want to update twice a week to make the story move faster, but once a week is perfectly fine too. If you sign up for this, remember it's a commitment and we expect you to keep your comic going.

How long does my comic have to be?
It's up to you! If you want to do a shorter story in web comic format, it's completely up to you. Not all web comics have to last for years. I would recommend people use the Artist BB format if you're planning on less than 20 pages total.

When will this be launched?
As I said, I don't have a concrete date yet, but as more information becomes available I'll announce it here!

« on: Mar 14, 2013, 01:50 PM »
It's a long ways off, but passes went on sale for NYCC today! They don't go as fast as SDCC, but they still do sell out at a decent rate, so grab them while you can! I'll be there with Red again. Who else plans to go this year? We actually had a pretty massive Void gathering last year, so NYCC has pretty much replaced Wizard World in terms of Voider numbers.

The first day of the con lands on my birthday this year, so we will go get cake and icecream.

VOID University / VCU 2013 Reboot: Round 2 - Coloring Styles
« on: Mar 01, 2013, 11:18 AM »
Here's a write up for the second assignment for Void U!

It always saddens me to hear people say "I don't like coloring, I'm not good at it", when the only way to get good at something is to do it! A lot of people feel forced to color in the "typical comics way", because when you think comic coloring, you probably think of something like this

Which is fine, and it's a totally good and legit way to color. But not everyone is cut out for the whole cuts and gradients style of coloring. Some people might try it and hate it, others might not like that look. And that's okay! There's tons of ways to color that are equally as great!

This assignment will help both new and veteran colorists find their voice. Your assignment is to color 8 different pieces in at least 3 different styles. Whether you use your own lineart or someone else's is up to you! (if you want to color professionally, take a whack at other artists' lines!)They can be comic pages or pinups.

PRACTICE LINEART
If you would like to submit some lineart for people to practice on, please PM me a link! Pinups are preferred, but comic pages are allowed too. It MUST BE clean, hi res lineart. No pencils allowed unless you're like Fooray or Chamba and have insanely clean pencils that work as inks. Here's an example of what I mean

http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/8608/pinuplines.png

you're free to use my example image as practice.

Regionals / SPACE 2013 April 13-14
« on: Jan 10, 2013, 02:19 PM »
I'm posting about this pretty early for those of you that are on the east coast-midwest that might want to get stuff printed. SPACE is the largest small press expo in the midwest. It's located in Columbus, OH and it's super cheap to get a table! So if anyone is able to make their way to Columbus in April, it's a great opportunity to sell your comics! Squidman and I will have a table there, and for really old school Voiders, I saw Cyboar there last year.

Info http://www.backporchcomics.com/space.htm

The con is only a few miles from my apartment, so I could potentially allow 1 more person to stay at my place if they need to. (just obviously you can't be allergic to cats as they're guaranteed to sleep on you if you don't want them around you)

Art Jams / EnterVOID Anthology vol 2 Cover Contest
« on: Jul 08, 2012, 09:01 PM »
Due to the success of the first Anthology, a second Anthology will be happening! It is a ways off (official drawing time likely won't start until 2013), but I figured this time it would be wise and give a ton of time so I can perhaps get more than 2 entries for when volume 2 comes around.

The Prize

the winner will get their work as the cover which is a nice way to show off and get your work promoted.

All of the covers you guys make will show up in the book, but only one will get to be the actual cover.

Deadline
MARCH 1, 2014

Who Picks the Winner?
I will be choosing the winner. I will be consulting the council for their opinions, but I will have the final say. No amount of kittens, chocolate, coffee, or fanart will be able to influence my opinion. I will be choosing based on color choice, clarity, how eye catching it is, solid execution, and how appropriate I feel it is for the book. (because of this, I will not be making a cover myself)

Requirements

-Entry must be in color and done in RGB
-Must be 300 dpi
-Must be 7X10.5
-You may do the text if you choose so, if you do, it must contain "EnterVOID Anthology Volume 2" on it. Text must be clear and fit the aesthetics of the cover. So obviously no scribbles/comic sans.
-Collaborations are fine, just don't use this thread to set them up.

The Big Rule on Content

To make things easier I will specifically allow characters to be on the cover. However, if you go the route of a character based cover, no fewer than 10 characters can be present. This is still to prevent the cover from being "here is my character and their BFFs!!!" or "here is my character being a total badass, this book is about me". The Anthology is a community project and the cover should reflect that, not be a shout out to your buddies. Now I would prefer people go a different route so it's a lot different from volume 1's cover, but I'm not going to tell you you can't have a character based cover.

News & Events / EnterVOID Pinups for the EnterVOID Anthology!

I've asked a few people over the course of the drawing deadline to see if anyone would be willing to design something for me for the Void Anthology, but haven't had much luck. If any of you graphic design inclined people would like to help me out, that would be awesome! Pretty much what I need is 2 templates

1.For the table of contents

2.For interior text like the introduction page, artist bios, etc.

It doesn't have to be anything flashy, just something that fits the Void Aesthetic. Worst comes to worst I can do it, but I figured it would be wise to try to get someone that has better design skills than myself. An Adobe Illustrator file is preferred as Illustrator handles text better, but I can take a PSD as well. PM me if you would like to do this and I will give you details!
