Title: The EnterVOID Anthology! Submit today!
Post by: Angie on Oct 22, 2011, 11:13 AM
Introduction

For those of you that have been on the site for a while, you may remember the Pulpo anthologies. To the new guys out there, Pulpo was an anthology book that was released through Void's Pulpo imprint. The thing about Pulpo was it only ran stand alones that weren't connected at all to Void. Now Pulpo's daddy has moved onto bigger and better things, which has left us without a yearly printed book.

Now for years I've heard members request some sort of Void related book. They were always told that it couldn't be done due to the copyrights being such a pain in the butt. But then I saw War for Arcadia did release an official book for their site that featured artists from the site's characters and artwork.

And to give credit where credit is due, their releasing the book which can be found at http://indyplanet.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=5875 gave me the idea that hey, this can be done, let's do this shit. Void hasn't done a book in quite a while and this is something members have been requesting for years, so let's do it! (and so help me god if any of you turn this into a Void vs. WFA thread you will face my wrath, so keep that shit out of here)

Requirements

1.Your entry must be Void related, meaning you're going to be using your character. The actual setting is up to you, so don't worry about it taking place in Void City. Alive or dead characters are allowed!

2.It must be a stand alone comic and must be something new, so no old battles. You are more than welcome to include bonus material like battle pages or pin ups, but it must be in addition to your comic.

3.If you are going to feature anyone else's characters, such as cameos. You must get their consent and info on getting that done is below in the copyright junk section.

4.Entries must be finished. Unfinished/obviously half assed entries will be declined.

5.Anyone who is a Voider that has done a comic on the site can submit and you won't be declined if you're not the best artist on the site. All that I ask is the entries be completed and are of equal quality to your battles.

6.No comic sans or unreadable text allowed. Anyone that uses comic sans or difficult to read text will get declined. You can find good fonts for free at http://blambot.com Digitally lettered pages are preferred so you can edit any typos and such down the line.

7.There will be a 3 page minimum, no maximum. But remember quality over quantity. A crappy 50 page entry isn't getting used.

8.No pornographic content

Technical Info

-printing will be done through http://ka-blam.com/printing/front/ and http://www.indyplanet.com/store/
-Black and White is accepted
-Color is accepted but it must be done in RGB (this is Ka-blam's standard)
-The book will be standard 7X10.5, however the "live area" as in area that won't get cropped is 6.25X9.75, Ka-blam has a handy template at http://ka-blam.com/printing/front/?p=119 if the template confuses you http://ka-blam.com/printing/index.php?page=Specs_comics should clear anything up
http://ka-blam.com/printing/front/?p=549 for double spreads
anything that doesn't fit in the template might get cropped. So double check all your pages to ensure they fit Ka-blam's template! I won't be fixing anyone's entries!
-All files must be 300 dpi. No more, no less. (beware of this if you work in Sai as it occasionally messes up dpi from Sai to Photoshop)
-All files must be saved as a .tif with LZW compression.
-All files must follow this naming format yourvoidnamepagenumber. For example, my submission would be angieness1.tif, angieness2.tif and such. No exceptions.
-Please include a page with any bio info/website info/credits you would like to have at the end of your entry

If you have any print specific questions, definitely check out Ka-blam's FAQ at http://ka-blam.com/printing/front/?cat=5

Deadline
April 1st, 2012 no exceptions
All entries must be sent to angieness@gmail.com by that deadline to be considered for print. Early submissions are welcome.

Copyright Junk/General Info

In order to give us the right to print something with your character, you will need to sign this form here.

www.hbreckelcolors.com/images/contractrough.pdf
(right click, save as)

If you cameo any character that does not belong to you, you must have them sign the form as well. This is to keep things from getting messy copyright wise. Once you sign the form, you give us the right to print your work and have your character featured. No take backs. You still retain all copyrights to your work and your character, Void nor Ka-blam nor Indyplanet will take the rights to your work away from you.

Absolutely no use of brands and such that do not belong to you is allowed. For example, you can't have Garfield drinking a can of Pepsi in your comic. Ka-blam actually declines comics for this.

As to where the money will be going, all proceeds will be going straight back to Void.

FAQ

Have any questions? Toss them my way and I will include them in this post!

Why Ka-Blam and not Lulu or some other print service?
I have done a few books through Ka-Blam and have had overall good results with them. It's mostly a matter of going with what I know.

Should we keep the comics just for the book or will we be able to submit them to void site too?
You may submit a small preview, but you cannot post the whole entry. This will give Voiders incentive to buy the book.

Why Void themed and not all new characters and stand alones?
People have been asking for this a long time. We did have a stand alone anthology and it might happen again at some point. So just give it time.

Will I get any money for doing this?
Unfortunately no. Not even I will be getting any form of compensation and I'm the one putting the book together. All proceeds are going directly back to the site for things like paying the site's domain bills and such.

Can I do a collaboration with someone?
Sure thing! Just don't use this thread to set collabs up. I will need signatures from all parties involved.

Can I include any old battle pages?
You can, but only and only if you include a completed stand alone comic. And please don't go overboard, I'm not going to allow you to include 5 of your old battles because that would be silly. And again, you must have permission for all characters included.

Can I have references to any previous battles?
I don't mind, in some cases it may be inevitable. But stand alone means stand alone. If the comic does not make sense on its own without the audience having read previous installments, that's a no go. While I understand it will be mostly Voiders buying this, don't do anything like having your story take place during an important story arc.

For colored entries, are there any color restrictions?
I will be honest, even though Ka-Blam takes RGB files, there is no guarantee your entry will print 100% accurately. I highly recommend you stay away from extreme neon colors or extremely dark scenes. Bright blues and yellows especially can be picky. Ka-Blam is fairly accurate in my experience, but neon colors and very dark colors are going to be a gamble.

On the other note, will there be a moment at which you will say: ok, no more signups, TOUGH! ?
Nah, if I seriously get a complete entry from everyone signed up that would be amazing. If I got more than 250-300 pages worth of work from people I would just split it into 2 soul crushingly awesome volumes to keep the cost of the book down. (I think 300 pages was the limit before the book would go past $30 and that's when it gets insane) I know the likelihood of receiving a complete entry from every single person that's signed up is very slim, same with getting more than 250 pages of content. Which is why I would rather ensure I keep sign ups open and let everyone in that might do something than potentially end up without enough work to put in the book.

Like I said, worst case scenario I get so much amazing content I would put it in a volume 1 and volume 2 (they would be released at the same time of course). But again, it's pretty unlikely that will happen as I realize things come up, some people might not end up doing it, some might not make the deadline, etc.

Anyways, I'll join in the fun with (http://entervoid.com/images/fighters/860/flower.png) (http://entervoid.com/character.php?id=860)

I had this idea for a comic that I was going to submit as a Beyond Battle. After seeing this, I'll transfer it exclusively for this book instead.

And to clarify, you are more than welcome to include old battle stuff but you must submit a new comic in order to include it. So I don't mind if you guys wanna show off any previous work, just there has to be a comic that is exclusive to the book first. Just don't like, submit your entire battle history, that would be a bit much.

Updated the FAQ with some info, especially on colors. Be wary of dark scenes or neon colors in your entry. Ka-blam is pretty accurate, but extremely bright neon colors and very dark scenes might not print out well. So be mindful of "do I think a printer is capable of printing this?". Certain yellows and blues can be kind of weird. I have personally never seen anything from Ka-Blam print too off compared to what I saw on the screen, but better safe than sorry.

Going off of what Angie said, if you're coloring with Photoshop, it should actually warn you if the color you're picking might not print the same.

Awesome awesome! We've got quite the sweet lineup so far! As long as everyone turns in, this should become a very lovely book. I'm estimating this will be about 200 pages or so unless we get some very very long entries. I think ideally we wouldn't want to go over 300 pages and I highly doubt we would (we're fortunately not all page monsters), because then the price might start getting insane for the book. I figure we'll cross that bridge when we get there when I actually look and see how many finished entries we have.

All the more reason to focus on quality over quantity.

And on the cost note, I am most likely going to let Indyplanet sell the book digitally as well. On the book that I released that was only about 50 pages, I remember a few international friends that bought it had to pay out the ass on shipping, I don't want to know how much it would be for something larger. It will be available digitally if the cost of the physical book is too much for you or the shipping might be insane.

Title: Re: The EnterVOID Anthology! Submit today!

I will be moderating entries based on the following criteria. And keep in mind on all of these it is your responsibility to fix any major problems I find, I won't be doing it.

-Is this comic equal to or superior to your comics present on the site? This is the big one. Like I said in the rules, anyone of any skill level can get in, but I have to see that you put your best foot forward. If it looks like ass next to your battles it's a no go. As long as you really put your heart into the comic, you'll have no issues getting in. Please don't attempt to make a long entry if you've never successfully done a long comic. I would rather have 20 entries that are 5 pages long that look amazing than 20 long entries that look like ass.

-Did they follow all of the rules?

-Does everything fit the technical specifications? (page size, does it fit the ka-blam template, is it 300 dpi, etc.) If it doesn't, you will be asked to fix it.

-I highly recommend everyone have a friend proof read their entries, especially if you know spelling/grammar is a weakness or if you might have some troubles with English. I'll be checking for typos and stuff like that so it'll definitely make my life easier if you guys have your buddies look over your script prior to submitting. I recommend everyone does their text digitally for this reason, because you'll have to fix any problems like that. I'm no grammar nazi, but at the very least your entry should be free of typos or grammatical errors when you're submitting something for print.

I mean it's going to be very straight forward. As long as everyone follows the rules and technical requirements and tries on their entries it's not going to be very hard to get in. I won't be personally critiquing everyone's entries or anything, but I will let you know what was wrong if the entry breaks the rules or looks like ass.

If anyone gets declined they can of course resubmit, but the problems have to be fixed or we won't be friends anymore.

Hey Angie, I'm the co-editor of the WFA artbook. Just dropping by to wish you good luck with the book! Good choice in doing an anthology, it will be much less work regarding editing than an artbook; our book took ages to put together because we had to chase down people, collect artworks and write texts too. I will check out the void book once it's done!

Regarding Indyplanet I can tell you a few things:

- The cover gets cut more than you'd think. The inside cover seems to get cut a lot less for some weird reason.

- The quality is okay but since it's print on demand it's not perfect. I think Indyplanet is much much much cheaper than Lulu if you want to print in color. Comixpress is another printing service but I have no experience with it. Seems to be the same thing, in essence. We had some small books from both Comixpress and Indyplanet here before we decided but it's hard to judge.

- Printing and shipping together can take up to a month, with bad luck even a bit longer. We have been waiting for the digital publishing option since June or so and as far as I know it's still not available. Their website is a bit broken in places.

- Shipping internationally! Our book had 224 pages so we are talking roughly the same size here. Do not order more than 4 books at once else the shipping costs will increase drastically if you have it shipped internationally (you can play with the amount in the shopping cart and see how shipping costs change). Shipping of 4 books is actually reasonable.
They split up my order of 4 books to 2 books per package and marked it as a commercial sample. This way it takes longer but it's also easier to avoid customs this way. Customs and stuff like that will probably depend on the country, so look up your customs regulations and the price limits if you want to save money.

All the best with this project! :-)

Thanks for the tips and the well wishes! Because I had gotten the idea from seeing WFA do it, I'm glad we have your blessing.

What would you recommend for a wrap around? I couldn't tell if you guys' cover was a wrap around or not from the picture on Indyplanet.

Yeah, cost was definitely the reason I went with Indyplanet over Lulu. Lulu is nice but they get pretty pricey and they can be picky about what they put up. I'm surprised it takes so long for them to put the digital version up. With my own book the digital edition went up at the same time as the print edition but that was only 50 pages vs. 200+. Have you guys contacted them about that? I remember just needing to ask and someone was able to put it up right away.

We had a wrap-around cover, you can see it on this photo: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h50/fivelein/WFA/Artbook/artbook-photos.jpg

As far as I know the whole digital book section has been down for half a year. I just looked it up, it's still down for "maintenance": www.indyplanetdigital.com

Very nice!

For the digital edition I may toss it up on Graphicly then, they seem to be pretty solid.

I just planned out my deadlines for my thesis, and it looks like I'll be working flat out on that for almost the next year. Basicly, I won't have time to do this.

I need to remove my entry.

Question: No pornographic content, define pornographic in this case?

what about nudity, or tasteful (or pg13) sex?
Title: Re: The EnterVOID Anthology! Submit today!
Post by: Angie on Jan 19, 2012, 01:08 PM
I would avoid sex and nudity altogether, Ka-blam won't print adult material and I don't know how lenient they are on nudity.

What about strong language and/or bloody violence?
Title: Re: The EnterVOID Anthology! Submit today!
Post by: Angie on Jan 19, 2012, 01:20 PM
Strong language and violence is fine, I think Ka-blam only cares about nudity/sex.

No, only online and print to order.  Void is not yet at a stage where comic book stores would be carrying it.

(not asking for an exact date here, more like just a vague movie trailer "coming this summer" would be fine tia)

Not sure, it depends on if everyone follows the Ka-blam templates for their pages. It'll likely be 1-2 months depending on how long it takes to get the test print, if there's not much editing that needs done, as well as how long it takes them to put it on indyplanet.

We're here in the last month now! Hope you're all working on your entries! If anyone needs any extra time, let me know. I am willing to grant extensions, but they have to be realistic, meaning you won't get anything like an extra month. But if you're cutting it close I'm willing to give people a little extra time.

Sorry, I won't be able to make the deadline for this. I only got about 5 pages done, and I was hoping to catch up during my spring break, but I think I'm gonna have to be working during it instead. And once I get back to college I won't have time.

I hate to be a party pooper...like I generally am these days, but I doubt I'll be able to find the time to submit. If I can get some things in order and just crack down hardcore next week on an entry for this I can maybe squeeze in one, but as it stands I doubt I'll be able to. Just haven't had much motivation in the way of working on Luna comics lately, and I was going to do something else...but I lost motivation on that too.

Still though, I've seen some rad WIPs from some of you guys so this should kick ass anyway.

Gmail can only take up to 25MB files at a time. If your files are too large, please upload them to rapidshare or sendspace and send them to me that way. Most entries shouldn't be that large when saved properly as a RGB TIFF with LZW compression

Anyone that submitted an entry, could you get me a quick artist bio? Some people made their own for their entries so if you want to format your own page for it, that's fine. Otherwise I need a quick blurb about you. I also need people's real names and the title of their entries if they didn't provide one.
Title: Re: The EnterVOID Anthology! Submit today!
Post by: Angie on May 17, 2012, 08:31 PM
I just finished assembling everything! All that's left is me writing a quick outro and making the spine. The editors are going to do a last look through to make sure I didn't mess up the order of anyone's comics. From there everything will be sent in to Ka-Blam for the test print. The final page count of the book is 177 pages!

I can't give an ETA yet as I'm not sure how long it will take to receive the test print, and there's also the chance something might go wrong. But if Ka-blam doesn't take forever, it should take about a month for it to be available. I don't have a finalized price yet, but it will likely fall between $20-$25 which is average for a full color anthology book of this size. For those who can't afford it/are from another country and don't want to pay out the ass for shipping, it will also be for sale digitally. (not sure how long it takes Ka-blam to put stuff up for digital sales)

I'm going to look over the book one last time tonight and send it in for its test print tomorrow! I'm not sure how long the process will take, I anticipate it taking a week or two to receive the test print. If we get it right on the first go, the book will be up for sale soon.

I know that shipping is a lot more for overseas, but that's a given. I recall a few people had to pay a lot for my 50 page book I released through Ka-blam just because of S&H. The book will at least be available digitally if anyone's afraid of the shipping costs.

Got the book in the mail today!

I am in the process of setting it up for sale, but here's the details.

177 pages
$20 for the hard copy, not including S&H
$4.99 for the digital copy
All proceeds that don't go towards printing, go towards the site itself, I'm not pocketing a dime.

I can't remember how long Ka-blam takes to put things on their store, but I'll make a new thread when it's available!

Next time I might not number the pages as there's just no elegant way to do it.

That's totally fine! Everything looks like it printed accurately to me. The people that were most in danger of having any issues were me and Jackster due to my weird color palettes and Jackster's bright colors and they came out fine. I didn't see any issues of pages going too dark which can happen. Ka-blam has always been accurate to me so that's why I went with them.
