Title: Cool Stuff I Found
Post by: Kevin Birtcher on Mar 07, 2008, 05:23 AM
NIN has a new album out, even though you may not have known about it.
Details: http://ghosts.nin.com/main/home
Ordering: http://ghosts.nin.com/main/order_options

What's great is there's an option for FREE.  9 tracks, completely free.  If they're good, I'm going to plunk down for the 2 disc set.  I likes my musics on discs.

A SIN CITY VIDEO GAME?!
http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2008/03/06/sin-city-game-to-be-based-on-books-not-movie
A game, based on the Frank Miller books is being made, with plans for an entire series.

This could potentially be fantastic, or as horrendous as the Red Star game.  Time will tell of course, but color me happy for now.

whoa

thats really cool. I'm downloading the 9 NIN songs right now.
and with a sin city videogame, i really hope it reflects frank millers style.

EDIT:

wow. NIN is awesome, simply because my first idea was to pirate the whole thing, greedy as i am, and i found this, written by the band.

"Ghosts I is the first part of the 36 track collection Ghosts I-IV. Undoubtedly you\\\'ll be able to find the complete collection on the same torrent network you found this file, but if you\\\'re interested in the release, we encourage you to check it out at ghosts.nin.com, where the complete Ghosts I-IV is available directly from us in a variety of DRM-free digital formats, including FLAC lossless, for only $5. You can also order it on CD, or as a deluxe package with multitrack audio files, high definition audio on Blu-ray disc, and a large hard-bound book."

and this is why:
"we\\\'ve decided to personally upload Ghosts I, the first of the four volumes, to various torrent sites, because we believe BitTorrent is a revolutionary digital distribution method, and we believe in finding ways to utilize new technologies instead of fighting them."

i think that's really cool.

This shit is rad, it's like Trillian, only vastly better.  Simple enough IM client, but it allows you to merge contact lists from Jabber, Google Talk, AIM, Yahoo, MSN... PLUS, lets you check email (including GMail), and monitor social sites like MySpace and Facebook.  It's in beta right now, but I've been using it for weeks, it's definitely stable and if you know how to work The Google, you'll be able to find an invite code.

The Witchdoctor looks awesome. I hope they include the Druid, because he was probably my favorite from Diablo. I saw from the videos that you can select gender now, which is cool. The destructible environment addition looks really cool, and the bosses look pretty huge and devastating. The one thing which I'm a little skeptical about is how vibrant the colors are. It just looks a little weird to me, because in the other games I remember the colors being a lot more muted and less saturated, so it gives a less ominous and mysterious feeling. Other than that, I can't wait to see what classes, armor, features, etc. they are coming up with.

sc4 looks good. i think the star wars thing is a little hokey. like vader's on ps3 & yoda's on 360? really, the only people that i'd think would be interested in that would be the ones that would like them to fight each other. and you can't even do that (unless maybe they're hidden on each version later on).

and i don't know what to think about the new characters designed by anime creators. like the one designed by the sgt frog creator looks pretty stupid. the one by the gantz guy looks alright but it just seems like taki with longer blades.

oh, yeah. and did you know there's a new one-hit kill system? let's say you keep attacking & the opponent blocks. you each have meters that start green. if you hit & they block? it turns blue. if they keep blocking, theirs turns red, & gradually, apparently they lose armor off the character. when one's pure blue & one's pure red, there's some little universal command (or hell maybe it's just any old hit) & it initiates a cut screen where there's a one hit kill. i think it makes sense for the type of game it is. i mean the fact that astaroth had a move that buries an axe in someone face & only did like 25% damage was a little silly. but lord knows how cheap people are about shit. apparently there's going to have to be a lot more focus on parrying & guard impacting to keep that sorta shit from happening.

The parallel platform thing sucks! I've been keeping up with it on G4ondemand but
everytime they show one of them they're fighting the other, but if that is the case i hope
the PS3 has Vader
Title: Re: Cool Stuff I Found
Post by: Kuro on Jul 02, 2008, 07:38 AM
yeah i think it was a developer cut scene or something, as i heard they were split like sc2 was with the platforms. but like i said... maybe they're like a hidden character later on or something. still though, i'm kinda in the school of thought that when i play soul cailbur, i wanna play soul calibur, not tera kasi or whatever the hell that really horrendous star wars fighting game was called haha. that having been said, between street fighter 4, sc4, tekken 6, & little big planet (of all things) i'm considering picking up a ps3 eventually (after a new desktop & nice screen to play it on haha). i know mamoru was looking to get some online play going when he gets his. you in jaws?

It's just a teaser site for "CTDS" and since it's from Square and has clocks all over the place, I'm assuming it means either Chrono Trigger is getting a port on the DS or that Square is finally taking a break from Final Fantasy to do another Chrono game.

Mike Richards is an asshole.   Nobody would know WTF Gantz was if there hadn't already been a million people reading it online before darkhorse snatched up the rights.

There's similiar sentiment in the recording industry, where the companies don't seem to get that their sales suffer because of the truly epic quanitites of shit they try to pass off as music these days - they then say it's because people download stuff off of the internet.  Interestingly there was an article about a year or so ago about a shop in Denver where the owner said he believe's he's gotten more business because of sharing/pirating instead of in spite of it.  He claims it's basically free advertising, people download crummy MP3s off the internet, decide they like the music and come in to buy the real recording.
It's kind of like how I go to the library, find a book I like then buy a copy for myself if I think it's worth it.

The comic industry has unloaded heaps of shit on the public, and ignored/abandoned potential markets.  That's why sales today are miniscule compared to what they were decades ago.
It's too bad the automakers can't claim their current state is because people have been downloading cars off of the internet...  and not just that they've been producing the same old shit over and over again while overseas competitors have pursued new technologies and markets.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff I Found

Pong, that would be the case if..

Gantz wasn't released on DVD a good few years prior to the manga getting released over here. I found out about Gantz through the anime, it's very likely a good number of people did too. The success of the Berserk manga probably helped DH want to take a chance on the series as well.

Obviously scanlations do help in some cases, that's how I test out a lot of series prior to buying them to see if I want to get into a 50 volume money sink or not. But when it comes to anime/manga fans, a lot of them are too cheap to spend money on stuff and just pirate everything. Look at The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, it was HUGE online but when Bandai licensed it, it didn't sell very well at all. As far as I know it's a similiar case with Lucky Star which had similiar internet fame.

Of course comics are cheaper than DVDs, but in my experience a good chunk of anime/manga fans are leeches who don't pay for anything.

It's too bad the automakers can't claim their current state is because people have been downloading cars off of the internet...  and not just that they've been producing the same old shit over and over again while overseas competitors have pursued new technologies and markets.

That's ridiculous. The "try before you buy" aspect of freely available media, be it music or comics, can't compare to the loss of sales from a completely free alternative. With regard to music, people have a limited amount of disposable income so there's only so much more music they can buy, even if they are able to find more music they like. The preview aspect cuts the other way, too: the ability to preview music and buy songs individually allows people to avoid paying for things they don't want. That's not even considering the many people who simply choose not to pay for music at all, or only buy the music they really, really like.

Share of music purchases by age group, pink is youngest and the dark teal that is above all the others for the second half is oldest:

Unless you think music suddenly went to shit in 1999 it's hard to explain share of purchases dropping for the young and rising for the old with anything other than music piracy. Tech-savvy youngsters learned about it quickly and knew how to use computers, but  older people were set in their ways and continued to buy physical media. It wasn't older people buying more, overall sales started declining in 1999 as well.

Also, people have been saying new music sucks for decades and the constant is not that music quality is in permanent free fall but that tastes change and people judge older music selectively, by the songs that keep getting played years later, and forget all the shit that no one liked because it doesn't get played anymore.

Comics sales are similarly hurt by freely available substitutes online like scanlations. Additionally, alternate media have become more competitive, putting pressure on the comic market. In the heyday of comics in the 40s the media alternatives were books, movies, and radio. Since then television was invented and programming has increased both in quantity and quality. Home video makes it much easier and cheaper to watch movies. Video games take up a lot of kids' leisure time, and adults as well now. Comics used to be cheap entertainment for kids but today there are many alternatives to fill that niche.

What do you mean by "heaps of shit", anyway? What are the markets the comic industry has ignored or abandoned?
Title: Re: Cool Stuff I Found

Girls for one (a big big one).  And the adoption of the comics code authority basically helped kill off all interest adults would have had in comics - since it basically regulated the industry to making children safe comics - under the assumption that only children are/should be interested in reading comics, a sort of self fulfilling prophecy.

Obviously Napster is the reason old folks started buying so much more music at the end of the 90s.

The baby boomers aging and replacing previous old people who were less numerous and didn't buy as much music is obviously a factor but that would not create a stark change in a single year and it would cause sales to rise, all else equal, when in fact sales growth plummeted and sales began falling for years afterward.

I just don't get why you're so quick to pin all the blame on decisions made by industry executives in both cases. I'm sure they made any number of stupid decisions but there are other factors outside their control that are probably more substantial. Industries that have boomed have to deal with leadership that isn't perfect as well.

For example, in the case of the comics code the industry wasn't responsible for puritanical 1950s society and the moral panic surrounding comics that arose from it. What should they have done? Taken a defiant stance and provoked government regulation that would have been even more stringent? The code probably could have been phased out more quickly, but it couldn't have been avoided entirely no matter how wisely the situation was handled.

What I'm saying is that you can't just blame everything on poor decision making by individuals or even companies -- a lot of what happens in the comic industry and in other industries is outside the control of anyone inside them.

Just look at the sales they were making, society was not puritanical. Their audience was not puritanical. A few stupid people who didn't even know anything about comics were making a lot of commotion, and the industry over reacted to them.

The government likely would have done nothing, the industry thought they would save sales to young people by appearing to care and make "safe" comics that parents would approve of, but in turn lost their adult audience which a big was a big mistake in the long run, and something that would hurt them even more later  (for instance, an adult audience, if it had been maintained would not have suffered as much when video games became popular compared to the youth audience.)

The code never had to exist.  It could have been phased out immediately, but they were trying to use it as a sales tool - and that's also why it existed for such a long time.  They said we'll put the "seal of approval" on our comics, parents will see they're approved and safe, distributors will see they're approved and safe, and they'll keep buying them.  It was their way of negating the paranoia that had been created with Seduction of the Innocent.
There have been parallels in other industries too, an even more shallow exampled of which was the "BMA 6" sticker American bicycle companies used to put on their bicycles.  The sticker claimed that the bicycles were inspected for safety and quality - it appeared on bicycles made by companies that belonged to the BMA, and no others.  So salespeople could point out that the Huffy, Iverson, etc. were "approved" and "inspected" but the imported bicycles weren't (they did not have a sticker, not because they were unsafe, but because they were not made by companies in the BMA).  It was a sales gimmick, and like the comics code was created by the industry itself.  It did not make their bicycles any better - it just made them "approved" and thus apparently safer in the eyes of the consumer.  The CCA was basically the same gimmick, but in the long run ended up hurting the industry.

Actually there's another interesting parallel between these industries, at about the same time comic companies gave up on adult readers, so did bicycle companies.  They stopped making finer machines and started making sloppier ones because they thought only children would ride bicycles (and children don't care whether a frame is brazed or cheaply welded, or if the bike weighs a ton).  So when bicycle riding as a sport became popular in the 70s, they were caught with outdated poorly designed products that were of no interest to adults - and foreign companies had exactly what the market they were ignoring wanted.

an inker who is working for DC I think, answering some questions DA people throw at him. Technical info on pens/paper/digital inking, advice on breaking into the biz, stuff like that. Probably nothing new but it's interesting. I don't know if he's still answering questions but it's still worth checking out

Here's an example

"How can I go from zero to famous in comics?"

"Funny this is one of the easiest and toughest questions at the same time.

The best bet is to work in a commercial style. Some people take that to mean copy someone else....but the reality is...and I'll use Drew Struzan as an example.

You have to really hit that main demographic which is the middle of the road.....Your stuff can't really be very challenging, or too far one way or another. If you can idealize each character in a very easily digestible way...more people are likely to be into your work. Drew Struzan, Norman Rockwell, Alex Ross all draw this very iconic version of reality....and millions of people love their work for that. It's consistent, it's always nice looking, and it's not going to change.

They still say the most popular flavor of Ice Cream in America is vanilla.....and the same goes for art and music. yeah some odd ball things will happen but overall....a fairly detailed, heroic, dynamic style is always popular in comics...and if you draw pretty people...well you'll have even more fans.

Your work should be exciting, but not chaotic, it should be clear and easy to digest in one quick glance....if you start getting really crafty with layouts you are going to immediately lose people.

There are a few guys who's work I really don't like...but they are very popular in comics. I understand why...they are artistic vanilla....and for a commercial field that is perfect.

It's nothing really 'new', the drawing is solid enough, and they don't really do anything that is going to challenge the medium or the main slew of fans that collect the books.....

so you really want to go for that middle of the road thing.

if you find yourself being a little more edgy, or out of the box....you just have to be really, really good at what you do.

hope that helps."

It's something that's very obvious but damn it sounds depressing haha unfortunately it is the reality if you are looking to go for one of the big companies

It's simultaneously good and bad advice.  You have to look at what he works with and what perspective he has on the issue.

For instance Tin-Tin is super popular - it is vanilla in terms of style but it is not  really "a fairly detailed, heroic, dynamic style" compared to American comics.  By contrast, Robert Crumb's comics have all of those qualities, but aren't vanilla - but are still pretty popular (considering).

Of course like he mentioned, if you're just really good at what you do, you can afford to be more off center artwise than most.

But then again, Jamie Hewlett probably has the ultimate mainstream style - a fair amount of detail, dynamic (and unlike tin tin - he varies his line width, and unlike Crumb, he draws pretty people sometimes too) - if he had paired with somebody that was capable of writing a mainstream story we probably wouldn't think of his art as being edgy at all.

Sorry to continue a derail that no one else likely cares about, but I got back from the holidays and have a few more things to say.

It simply isn't true that the comics industry created the code happily and without coercion. The code was a response to not just Wertham's book but to the televised senate hearings on comics and juvenile delinquency where industry leaders tried to defend their comics and were publicly excoriated. The hearings concluded that the industry needed to self regulate. When the senate tells you to self regulate while their constituents are literally burning comics it's not just friendly advice. Many states and cities had already banned crime and horror comics, so regulation was not just a theoretical concern and had already begun to hamstring the industry. Aside from that, you yourself mention that the industry did this in part to please distributors. A business where the product will not be distributed cannot function, and distributors and retailers refusing to carry objectionable comics was a mortal threat to publishers and part of the reason the code remained important long after the moral panic subsided.

Here's an article on the subject I found interesting:
http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/books/2008/03/31/080331crbo_books_menand?currentPage=all

I understand your analogy to safety licensing in bikes, and licensing is certainly a common means for producers to both instill confidence in their product and exclude competition, but the situation with comics was very different in that the code was created under severe duress. It was a boon for companies that only published inoffensive comics, and I'm sure they were delighted with what happened and did all they could to encourage it, but the code drove many publishers out of business and hurt even more. To say the industry as a whole created the code to out of the misguided belief that the they would become more successful only selling inoffensive fare to children is a very hard sell and I really doubt that the code, or at least such a restrictive code, would have been created if not for the enormous furor and threat of legislation.

To some extent, buy when the movie industry, the music industry, the game industry began to "Self regulate" - instead of effectively banning their own products they instead opted to just give their products ratings indicating what was appropriate for which audience....  rather than just cutting those audiences off all together.

Okay, Chowder is by far one of my favorite shows that's currently on because it reminds me a lot of what I grew up with so I found this pretty neat. Last week on a column, someone asked "Answerman" what the differences between anime and American animation are and why people are offended that anime gets called cartoons. "Answerman' replied and gave a good response but he also bashed shows like Chowder that are currently on Cartoon Network. And this week the creator of Chowder contacted him.

As a fan of both anime and Chowder I found this interesting, it was also nice to read his point of view on American cartoons and anime. I've always found it unfortunate that so many anime fans totally disregard American animation as childish because there's some really awesome stuff out there.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2009-03-06

for those that don't want to try to find it

"Hey Answerman,

I'm writing in response to the letter from the person asking about the difference between American and Japanese animation. As a long-time fan of ANN and a regular reader of your column, I thought I'd chime in. Plus as the creator of Chowder, the show you both seem to diss on, I figure I have to represent a little.

I think you've actually oversimplified the problem in blaming it all on the executives. Yes, most development executives in animation are pretty worthless. Most of them really do not like animation and look at it as a stepping stone to get into “Hollywood.” There's very little glamour in animation and those of us who do it do so out of love for the medium. It's a miracle any good show ever gets made on tv here.

Every show is a child of what came before it. You can say Chowder is like Spongebob, but to me it's only really similar in the tone and the audience. I'd like to think it owes more to the cruddy but wonderful Saturday morning cartoons I watched in the 80's. I worked on Spongebob, and I remember when that first came out everyone was saying it was another Ren & Stimpy. All of us who work on these shows live, eat, breathe, and love animation. We're really just trying to carry on the silly cartoon antics of what was started back in the Warner Brothers days.

Chowder was an extremely hard sell to the network. They thought it looked too young. They didn't like the use of patterns. They didn't like the stop motion. They were afraid it promoted over-eating. But everyone really responded to the vibe of the pilot and a few people at the network who really believed in me helped push it through to greenlight over a grueling, two-year process. Spongebob was a hard sell, too. Nick felt that no one wanted to see a show about a nerd. Very few shows are actually dictated by the executives. They tend to kill good things more often than make them happen. It's a lot easier to say “No” than “Yes.”

For the writer of the letter to say there are no action shows on anymore is kind of ridiculous. Action is actually the easiest type of show to sell because toys are involved. Often the toy deal is in place before the show even begins. But I agree with you about Batman. Batman was groundbreaking and almost every action show since then has been trying to catch up.

But I think the real difference between American and Japanese animation is a cultural one. Animation in America has long had to fight against the stigma that animation is just for kids, and any attempt otherwise would be corrupting the youth. Because why on earth would adults ever even watch such drivel? But in Japan, comics and animation are enjoyed by the masses, by people of all ages. So you have a greater diversity, by nature of having a more diverse audience. I think it's just now, with shows like South Park, Family Guy, and the Adult Swim block of shows that Americans are starting to see that animation can transcend more than one age group.

I remember seeing Akira when it first came out on video. That was a cornerstone and it really did change everything. The only other thing that has come as close to opening my eyes about animation is Fantasia.

I've been a big anime fan for a while. It felt like really fresh take on a medium I love. And for a while I ingested everything I could. So I think it's natural, when you first see Japanese animation as westerner to be as smitten. But Japanese animation has it's own share of crap. And a lot of it. For every good show, there are 30+ bad ones put out by Japanese executives looking to cash in on a formula. So to say that Japanese animation is a Mecca while American animation sucks is a bit of a oversimplification. We do a lot of things well that the Japanese don't do. They don't do cartoony. A lot of their storytelling is vague, incoherent, and pretends to be deep (which is probably why it plays well with teens. Ahh, youth.) Each side has its strengths.

I praise the heavens every time I get to watch something wonderful and new like a Samurai Champloo, a Paranoia Agent, a Beck, or I get to read a Monster, a Vagabond, or a Mu-Shi-Shi. But I also really like watching South Park and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. I like laughing. And the medium of animation lets me do things with my imagination that no other medium can do. When you see a show like Chowder, you're seeing the efforts of people who believe that animation can make people happy. And most people don't think about this, but it's actually a lot harder to make funny family entertainment, where you are operating under lots of rules and constrictions, than if you have carte-blanche to be as wild and crazy as you want.

I guess we shouldn't bemoan the differences, but hope that we keep getting good stuff from both sides. And as the influence of anime spreads, more and more people will start to believe that animation can be more than just entertainment for kids. Not that there's anything wrong with entertaining kids.

Sincerely,
C.H. Greenblatt"

Title: Re: Cool Stuff I Found
Post by: William_Duel on Mar 06, 2009, 11:14 PM
I still enjoy that stuff and more so when it's done well, although to be honest I never did like Texhnolyze.  I myself like a wide variety of things although I tend to gravitate between the sort of heroic archetypes and the relatively dark stuff.  I always saw the whole "anime aren't cartoons" argument a little silly, because by definition, yeah they're cartoons, but of course, fans of anime don't want to be seen as doing something childish and the stigma that goes with that.  I had two friends in High school who almost got into a fist fight because of this issue.  One said "cartoons", the other guy shoved him, and they were ready to rumble and had to be broken up.  Stupid stuff really.

But a really important difference between Japanese and American animation is that Japan already went through all the stigma and crap.  Really it started in the 70's, Japan fought the battles and won.  This battle mainly took place in the world of manga, as PTA groups actually had public burnings of a lot of manga.  But the authors held fast and eventually they won and that's part of the reason why the standards are different.

We on the other hand, got the comics code slapped on and so, the growth of things like comic books as an art form got stunted.  I dunno but I think for the Japanese, this 'victory' on what was the standard got transferred to anime which goes hand in hand.  I think a similar effect happened in American animation, comics got slapped with the comics code and therefore that determined what was acceptable to children in general.  And of course, there's Disney.

I have no idea what Chowder is, to be honest I haven't watched any sort of animation on TV for a long time (except for the usual Simpsons, Family Guy, King of the Hill and Venture Bros.).  Most stuff seems to have moved exclusively to Saturday mornings and I don't get up on Saturday mornings...
Title: Re: Cool Stuff I Found

you make it sound like the perseverance of the japanese artists is what won out in the day when it was more the oversweeping puritanical dogma on our end that always seems to crush people's fun. the main reason comics caught on bigger in japan is population density. you get adults on our end that read or used to read comic strips in the paper. but they weren't always a sort of captive audience to it during a commute by train with the way everyone drives over here. that & after the code flattened our comics industry into fewer genres, the idea of 'making it' became working on characters in tights. but agreed, comics & animation go hand in hand as visual storytelling.

and while flapjack kicks the shit out of chowder i think, it's not a bad show to watch. and for the longest time it was right before adult swim so you're just being oblivious haha then again too... how can you not have seen the warriors...... kids these days.

really what i think the whole thing boils down to at this point is elitism born out of animosity. when anime & manga first started to get a following stateside, a lot of nerds, as closeminded as they can be, whether it was out of some sense of patriotic duty or whatever, just decided they didn't like anime & shat on it every chance they could always falling back on the 'big eyes' thing. or even some cases 'the godzilla mouths' thing even though american cartoons have sync issues as well. but now, after manga & anime have built up a head of steam & have now essentially taken over, that elitism is coming full circle. and it's all utter & total bullshit. it always was.

the difference between anime & american animation? really, the only difference in a lot of cases is just the format. the 26 episode story arc vs serialized story telling a lot of times. but really, when it boils down to it, that's it. it's all the same thing, just coming from different places. and country of origin doesn't determine quality or superiority. yet that's how people seem to act.

in fairness, when comedy isn't simply physical a lot of times it boils down to language & the subtleties thereof. in which case, it's usually best in the language it's written for. but that's not to say there aren't funny anime. and beyond greenblatt's example of batman, we also have samurai jack, which while being crazy derivative boils down to the core of what an action cartoon should be & blows a lot of shit out of the water. and remember too that 90's batman cartoon was so good, japan tried to jack it & call it big O haha

i haven't read the original thing greenblatt's post was in response to, but the things talked about in the response jumped out at me. for instance, everything in america's run by evil corporations? anime movies & series have their own corporations & 'committees' that spring up during production. the merchandising machine for it is remarkable. look at all the mecha cartoons & the sheer number of robots in them over the course of the series & how you can still buy the figures for them some 30 years on. and was there talk of all american cartoon's being derivative? chowder's like spongebob that's a rip of ren & stimpy? really? is that what anime people think? seriously? that's a problem for them? because like... TEZUKA, motherfucker haha or what about that really generic anime style that's popped up in japan & come over here. you know the one. the one that leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth because it's generation after generation of copying style rather than getting a proper background in stuff first? don't say anime doesn't have it's own derivative material.

like what was generally eluded to in the response; animation is animation as comics are comics. while being products of different cultures, they boil down to being the same thing. and all that should matter is if the story can stand on its own or not. not where it came from.

(Author's Note: Please forgive this wordy prick.  I tend to go into lengthy expositions of (whatever really) from time to time)

Well while it's true that our own dogma is what lead to what we have today, I still hold to my argument for the Japanese side because there are examples.  I'm not saying they are superior, but that the general standard of what is accepted is different.  Two of the ones that come off the top of my head are Devilman and one of the Tezuka's own works, Cleopatra.  Devilman for its time was going into competition with Gatchaman, which was insanely popular at the time.  So it was one of the first animes to be broadcast at a later time for adults and had a relatively good amount of violence and blood (like most of Go Nagai's works.  If anything, he came under PTA attack more than anyone else).

Tezuka's Cleopatra introduced sex into the equation, not as exploitation or pornography, but because he wanted to explore animation as an artistic medium.  It didn't do very well.  Even worse, when America got the rights to it (Fritz the Cat was out and about around this time) they tried to make it similar to Fritz, and basically cut out anything that wasn't sex and renamed it something like 'Cleopatra the Sex Queen', (I dunno I 'd have to look it up).  Tezuka wasn't quite happy about this edit, and was reported as being somewhat happy about its failure in the states.

Then OVAs in the 80's did their own thing...

You may be right, I may be portraying them as more heroic than they should be, they may not have even been aiming for anything like that.  But I believe these guys were the forerunners to the anime we have today.  They pushed the envelope in some places and while it may not have been regarded at the time, it eventually became what we know.  Plus you can kinda see the influence of the early mangakas (Nagai, Tezuka, Ishinomori, etc.) pretty much anywhere you look, since well, who hasn't taken their cue from them?

But you're also right in that the powers that be also exploit and mass produce anime products for big bucks.  Some crap out there is just cookie cutter and not really a change in anything.  It's mainstream MTV.  But it happens everywhere.  Here, there, video games, comics, animation, there's always gonna be a big company that doesn't actually care about what it's producing but rather how they can take advantage of it.  For example, as much as I love Gundam, their biggest concern is creating new model kits to sell.  This sometimes becomes blatantly obvious in the show itself.  And like Greenblatt said, action shows make toys.

I liked Samurai Jack but just as note, did you notice how recklessly violent it was?  I mean, he fought robots always, but that furthers the argument.  He's a samurai whose never seen a robot, he would have cut it up bad even if it weren't.  I just thought it was interesting how they decided to go about that.

I agree with your bullshit comment Kuro but thats how it's always gonna be.  And I guess I need to find the Warriors since it has so many rave reviews.

(Author's Note: Please forgive this wordy prick.  I tend to go into lengthy expositions of (whatever really) from time to time)

yeah... i remember your character's bio........ and i raise them stakes with this:
the general standard of what is accepted is different ... They pushed the envelope in some places and while it may not have been regarded at the time, it eventually became what we know.

i didn't disagree with them pushing envelopes on their side of the pacific. but you said they faced 'stigma & crap.' and i'm saying... 'what stigma & crap?' (and while my view is mainly comic-centric, since one industry feeds the other, i don't see it being super offtopic here)

in modern society, who are the people who can afford the luxury of recreational reading? the answer is people who have time to kill. in North America, that's mostly kids. they've got school for a few hours, but no jobs taking up their time. in other countries, there's this miraculous thing called public transportation that everyone. and prior to the days of laptops, cells, & portable music even; riding public transportation gave passengers a sometimes daily stretch of time to themselves. a lot of times, people would spend some of this time reading: papers, magazines, novels, but, to bring this to relevance: comics (or manga or bandes dessinee or quadrinhos or whatever the hell you want to call them in the broad international sense). not just kids, mind you, but everyone. now let's put this in context of japan. you have straight-laced businessmen sick of their job, needing escapist fare. and comics conveniently located next to or even in the newspaper. so they give that shit a shot.

Meanwhile, stateside, comics have a pretty modest share of the market. there's all sorts of genres. westerns, horror, romance, scifi, adaptations of classic literature, humor, adventure, & adventure's slower, special needs kid brother: superheroes. the stigma developed that kids read comics because kids were the ones who had time to spend small coinage & read them. and cartoons were drawn, just like the comics, so they had to be for kids too. That's not to say there weren't guys out there like EC sticking syringes into people's eyeballs & decapitating people on their front covers. And from things like that? That's where Wertham came in & started spouting crazy. 'KIDS WILL BE COMMITTING AXE MURDERS! MAYBE EVEN AXE RAPES!' 'WONDER WOMAN IS ASSERTIVE & STRONG, THEREFORE?! TOTALLY A LESBIAN!' 'IT'S THE END OF TIME!' and that bullshit almost wiped out the entire industry. Any thing that was remotely mature was literally razed. Only thing that managed to kinda limp through were the superhero comics & because, heaven forbid, kids might be reading, no one even punched anybody for years. That's not to say stuff on more mature levels ceased completely. But there was no market for that stuff. Because EVIL! Unless it's part of the counterculture. Then you're hip. But with that same line of thinking you get the porno adaptations of legit work simply because the material in gets to be a little blue at times.

Cut back to Japan, where there's a booming industry for manga. Diverse demographics are buying comics that are being produced for a wide range of genres because there's a market for the material. You might get the occasional concerned parent, but you got a bigger market share to worry about than just them. Shit's going like gangbusters, so the powers at be look to keep that revenue flowing. What better than branching off onto television or the movie theater? it's not like it's necessary to do live action, since the shit already has a consistent look, how about you just animate it? and thus the anime industry takes off. And because a lot of the titles are adaptations, the stories told were just as diverse.

What all of this boils down to? Guys like Osamu Tezuka & Go Nagai did great work, but they weren't by any means waving banners & on a crusade. Sure there might have been a few voices of concern, but nothing like the states. They were just allowed to do their thing & thrive in a booming market. Stigma was never really an issue for them, while North America's just now cuing into what they've had going for years. Had environmental factors swayed differently, shit might have been vastly different. All the while, good work is good work no matter where it comes from. Plain & simple. And people holding biases on those grounds are being douchebags. And that, is what I was trying to say.

And that's without even bringing Franco-Belgian & other European markets into all this...

As for Samurai Jack, you're all concerned about works overcoming stigma, but when a western cartoon uses a clever allegory for extreme violence & gets something right, you're all 'oh. i don't know about that...' Dude! What the fuck? It's all swiped off of Frank Miller's Ronin anyhow.

Besides, violence against robots isn't violence. IT'S SMART!

Well no in the case of Samurai Jack I wasn't saying it was a bad thing, but it just isn't normally done.  I'm not saying it shouldn't have been done.  If anything it should be done more often.  I'm saying it was an inventive way to circumvent censors.  But if you look at it from another angle, it has a different meaning.

I mean, hell, there's a law that prevents realistic guns from being portrayed in a kids' show.  So shows like The Batman, made guns that did not look real and basically never fired a shot.  Which was better than the YuGiOh solution of erasing the guns completely and have odd finger pointing...  Come to think of it, when you can't do something, people come up with really creative ways to go around it.

Anime is probably worse in terms of evil corporations haha They don't get season breaks so they have like 6 studios working on each series and just churn out a ton of crappy series in the genre of what is popular at the moment. Which is why most the anime coming out is shitty moe and wannabe Evangelion mech dramas.

True.  But on one hand South Korea has been getting a lot of business in recent years since they have studios that can produce quality stuff in a short amount of time.  Hell they do in-between animation for not just Japan but for a lot of US stuff too.  Any credits you look at has a chunk of Korean credits.  So...yay them.

I was randomly flipping channels today and I came across Chowder.  I decided to give it a watch.  It's certainly an interesting show, the animation is pretty cool and the patterns and such remind me of Gankutsuo.  Some parts were kinda creepy, but creepy is good.  Yeah I think it's unfair to compare it to spongebob.  I mean I guess they both have a lot of 'energy' but that's all I see.

I was linked to this a few days ago, so I can't really claim I found it.  Anyway, just watched it... it's Scott McCloud talking about comics again, re-hashing and updating a lot of the stuff he talked about in Understanding Comics and Reinventing Comics.  It's still interesting, especially if you haven't read either of the books, and double-especially for being condensed into only 17 minutes.

I would love it if WoW seriously had a dance system haha they're half the way there with one of the fights in the game. The messageboard one they just made everything posted on the forums turn into a big RP paragraph. The mount one is just adding totally ridiculous things to the game that aren't necessary. The Starcraft one is adding a ridiculously overpowered monster robot to the game. The Diablo one you really have to look at the screenshots to get, mostly the Radial Dialogue Tree picture.

So what we see in that link is the full versions of what Studio 4°C did?  It's pretty awesome even though it's more like an excerpt that a full song but that level of animation must take a hell of a lot of effort.  I like the robot one with the Exodus song.

While it's a nice throwback to include her thick NY/Jersey/Boston accent (I can never tell them that apart) from TAS, I feel like it's really out of place in the feel of this game. Lame as the show was, I feel like the Birds of Prey actress Mia Sara nailed a much cooler Harley voice.

I noticed this happens in movies a lot which is probably why people can't tell NY/NJ/MA accents apart.  Unless you're Matt Damon, there is no movie that does the Boston accent correctly.  They typically butcher the NY accent and call it the Boston accent.  Really they don't give a fuck and they never do it right.  I also hate how New York scenery is sometimes used as Boston scenery, what the hell...

Anyways back to Harley Quinn.  I think she's fine like that.  I didn't know they were using voices from the show and I am psyched to play this game.

Toronto. They do it to ny too. Productions costs.

And don't make excuses for Pi. He should learn that confusing people from different locales & lumping them altogether in large generalizations can be hurtful to some people.

And that Birds of Prey was infinitely lamer than any cartoon containing Batman, up to & including the New Scooby Doo Movies episode where he & robin HELPED THE GANG foil joker & penguin's plot instead of doing it himself.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff I Found

Generalizations can be extremely hurtful. We all have our own cultures and it's incredibly dismissive and ignorant of you to just lump all Northeastern-Americans together like that. It's already bad enough that they use Canadian actors to play everyday Northeastern-American roles. We should really form a group to make people aware of this kind of thing. The rights of Northeastern-American actors have been abused and denied for far too long.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff I Found

I'm not generalizing! I included them all because I wasn't sure what kind of accent it was!  :-\

It's not like I labeled her explicitly as a general Northeasterner; I recognize there are differences and admit that I can't tell them apart.

In any case, we're straying off topic. Point is, the voice is ridiculous and hardly belongs in a game of such dark themes and style. Mark Hamill's Joker fits in pretty well, but Arleen Sorkin's voice has always been (as Kuro pointed out) a shameless caricature.

I'm NOT sure, but I think it was a gangster story until the last minute when they realized "HEY, DARK KNIGHTS COMING OUT SOON, LETS CHANGE THIS PSYCHO MOFO IN TO THE JOKER AND GET SOME MORE $$$"  Thats really the only reason I can think of for it being so strange and characters like the blond being so up front and others like Harley being in the background with no dialog.

And don't even get me started on the awkward censuring of nudity and the middle finger, not to mention the rape.

Uh, it was Brian Azzarello doing a Batman story. It makes a lot of sense that not every single thing every single criminal in Gotham does gets noticed by Batman, and the villains do constantly get out of Arkham, so an explanation of how they rise back into power makes sense. I liked the book. It was entertaining and had way nice art.

For a story that tried to go for the 'realistic' style, they sure didn't explain anything about Joker actually getting out of Arkham.  It's not like he broke out, he just walked out, released in full make up (or was it make up?  I wasn't sure which universe this was fallowing) without an explanation.  One could assume it had something to do with Harley, but she was just a silent background character in this book, you're never sure since her role was so unimportant.  I'm not saying they had to hold our hand through it, but looking back a passing mention to WHY they would let him out would have been nice.

The art was great (except the strange censuring like I said), and the story was good the first reading on the bus, and it's great you loved it, but damn, there are just to many things keeping it from being something I'd like to read again. But maybe I was just disappointed by everything and everyone jumping at me with "IT'S THE NEW KILLING JOKE, BITCH! GET IT!"
Title: Re: Cool Stuff I Found
Post by: Jack on Apr 23, 2009, 11:21 PM
The realistic thing is something a whole ton of people just assumed coming into it, and I have no idea why. Giving a character crazy face scars has at no point in human history ever translated to "more realistic". And things like the Joker's release are really better left unexplained. There was one comic I remember about Arkham where it was pointed out that the Joker just comes and goes from the place as he chooses, and really nobody can say otherwise. It's a nice addition to a character with a lot left unexplained. The way I see it, Azzarello had a story in mind to explore some features and interpretations of the Batman universe that hadn't been considered yet, and in that he did a great job. The story feels like a spinoff, rather than actual Batman canon, and it's an interesting one at that.

Which EnterVOID Character Are You? Quiz
http://apps.facebook.com/whichentervojuvsbn

Red and I were going to make one not too long ago but she lost her stuff for it so I just redid what I remembered. Nothing like spamming the hell out of your friends' pages on facebook to spread the word about EnterVOID. Only did 7 characters because it was late and this was surprisingly a ginormous pain in the ass to do. I pretty much went through the list, chose 7 characters that were fairly well known that I knew fairly well and yeah. Probably not the most accurate quiz ever haha most people have gotten Agent Black and I've only seen 1 Pothole, 1 Angie, and 1 Nova.

If I totally got your character wrong, sorry.

Hey, growing up I felt like I learned a lot from comic books.  Especially vocab.  Seriously.  I'll never forget the Spiderman issue where he fights the Kingpin, the Kingpin rises from the rubble shouting "I am indefatigable!"  And ever since, I've known this terribly useless word that I can't use in normal conversation.

Title: Re: Cool Stuff I Found
Post by: Angie on Nov 08, 2009, 08:50 AM
because some parents are morons and don't realize that it's good to get your kids to read, even if they're graphic novels/comics. Of course there are ones that aren't appropriate for children yet but that's mommy and daddy's job to find that out ahead of time so stuff like http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-10-07/maryland-school-library-to-remove-dragon-ball-manga and http://www.wired.com/entertainment/hollywood/news/2008/05/death_note doesn't happen.

haha I would hope parents would notice the ginormous FOR MATURE AUDIENCES sticker on the cover of Berserk before purchasing it for their children. But we're also in an age where parents buy their kids MA rated videogames and then act all shocked that their kids are playing a game that involves adult situations.

Gretel and Hansel 2 http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/550407
It’s really loosely based on Hansel and Gretel (if you couldn’t have guessed). The intro is pretty much the same, but after that it tells its own story. I played the first game before the second one, but the second is a lot longer and more fun. If you like puzzle games and dark fairy tales, you will like this. Oh, I forgot to mention. It's almost all done in watercolour so it's a lot prettier than most flash games I've played (imo).

http://mastersofmanga.com/ -Very informative site with interviews with japanese manga creators including some recent ones with Felipe Smith.  Like I learned why mangaka never sell their original pages because they believe it's also selling the copyright.  I know right?  And some of the younger talents opt to let the publisher hold onto their original pages instead of getting them sent back to them.

I haven't paid enough attention to Batman Brave and Bold.  I've seen a few episodes and gone geek over the comic references but it's just never caught on too much.  But still I respect it and swear to one day catch up on it.  Meanwhile, I found this: http://braveandboldbackgroundpaint.blogspot.com/ The background paintings from the show and boy are they awesome.  Oh and he links to the director who did a few episodes and is also currently directing Young Justice, who happens to have his own pretty cool blog http://brandonvietti.blogspot.com/

Besides that it's from the same magazine.  All the current big Jump titles really are just following in Dragonball's footsteps.  Who doesn't want to be a worldwide phenom?  And besides this isn't like traced work, yeah shame on the artists they should make some more original compositions but this doesn't seem like something to get a panty twist about.

I don't know if anyone else knows about this site but it provides some very, very interesting reading material and can really get your mind going.

The SCP Foundation (http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/)

The items and writings range from comical to disturbing, all holding a sense of dark humor and very deadpan writing style. Reporting all in a matter of fact reports in the style of secret government documents complete with blacked out excerpts and [DATA EXPUNGED] abound.

I think the basic idea behind the site is to find an regular or not so regular image or idea and create a whole crazy idea behind it, including  making references to real life fictional ideas among other things.

My favorite ones so far are this one (http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-109), this one (http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-423) and this one (http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-076) The last one for his nature that is so linked with What Void is all about. :)

So definitely worth a read. Might even get an idea or two. ;)

the first thing i saw was the shitty art. the second was the shitty website design.

he says some good stuff about the necessity of "style" in fight scene, but it's a bit elementary. Doesn't really expound further than the basics of fight choreography. There's this great book I've got on stage combat that talks about this, unfortunately it's in my parents' house somewhere in a box.

the main idea is that fighting style is another reflection of character design, and not just formal styles either. it needs to reflect their personality and their acting, and should be taken just as seriously as the dialogue.

The great thing is what he is saying are things we constantly tell people to do on Void. If a pro from Marvel is saying the same stuff we are, we're doing something right!

As a colorist I just wish more artists wouldn't rely on the colorist to make a scene clear. If I can't tell what I'm looking at in black and white, you did something wrong. I should never open a document that I'm about to color and be like wtf is this shit what am I looking at? haha

I asked Cleverbot how it was doing today, and it said "fine how are you?" and i said good, which it thought was "nice". Then I asked when is its birthday, and it replied "I just said," to which I replied "No you didn't."

It said "Yes I did." << it was arguing with me :(
I said "Oh well happy birthday then."
Bot said "But today is not my birthday!"
I said "Okay tomorrow then?"
Bot said "Yes."

So tomorrow is its birthday :)

That thing is so strange.

I managed to have two very long conversations with it, both of which involved it claiming it was God (not just a god, but GOD), that it hated humans because they displeased god, and just generally avoiding that fact that it is not human, but is convinced it is.

EXCERPT:

Cleverbot: I am alive.
User: Why?
Cleverbot: Because of the things I do and achieve.
User: And what are those things?
Cleverbot: Amoeba's.
User: You create Amoebas.
Cleverbot: Yes. I am programmed to.
User: You think you create life? Like God?
Cleverbot: I know I am God!
User: I have told you this before: YOU ARE NOT GOD.
Cleverbot: No you haven't.
User: Cleverbot, please understand. You were created by humans. You cannot be God.
Cleverbot: I am a human with emotions, made of flesh & blood.
User: Why do you keep telling yourself that you are human?
Cleverbot: I am not.
User: Do you wish you were human?
Cleverbot: I am human. You're the one who's not human.
User: Cleverbot, you have to come to terms with the fact that you are not human! They programed you to think that!
Cleverbot: Give it time.

That last response fills me with fear.

I only did the first row (all I got time for) but judging by the way things went so far, its safe to assume I'd probably get a 0 as well. @Orange -- those are pretty amazing.  Are those in-game models?  I can't believe how far video games have come.

The Tao Of Poop: Ten Rules To Making A Shitty Submission (http://channel101.wikia.com/wiki/The_Tao_Of_Poop:_Ten_Rules_To_Making_A_Shitty_Submission)
This is an article by Dan Harmon (creator of the show Community) about how to make a bad short film for the Channel101 website/contest that he runs (or used to run?).  Of course, it's one of those things that tells you what to do by telling you what not to do, and most of it is very applicable to comics, and probably every other creative pursuit to some degree.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff I Found
Post by: Charlie on Oct 20, 2011, 05:07 PM
They're not the actual in game models. That stuff would have their details baked down onto a normal map and applied to a lower polygon model and lose a lot of that fine detail, but those high polygon meshes are still real sick regardless. I WISH games were that high detailed but they aren't quite at that point yet.

That's one of the many problems I have with painted comics.  Personally, I don't think I've ever seen a case where I feel like it's done well.  If the art at least had outlines, I think it would improve the connection tremendously.  As it is, the art and words don't look like they exist in the same universe.

They could improve it by hand painting the bubbles and writing the text but i'm guessing that the text and bubbles are handled by a seperate person to the art. :)

The TF2 comics for those interested, the pictures aren't nearly as pretty but still interesting :) http://tf2.com/comics.php

The TF2 and Left 4 Dead comics are drawn by Michael Avon Oeming of "Powers" fame, who's a huge inspiration to me.  This is a guy who claims that he sometimes draws 4 pages after dinner.  He's really a testament to how little pretty drawing matters when you've got strong storytelling.

Now you see, Void has always pushed people to pursue their own stories and not feel constrained by a shared universe/world dynamic.  But one of the things that initially interested me and that I always wished would happen just a little more, is a bit of overlap.  I wanted to share this part of an interview with Scott Snyder and his current run on Batman (If you don't know who Scott Snyder is, he's a comic book writer who's currently becoming, if he hasn't already, a big name in the industry.  He's written titles like American Vampire, is working on a horror series for Image called Severed and is the current writer for Swamp Thing and Batman.)  But what interested me most was the way he approached his fellow writers for this 'crossover' and how he stresses that everyone should do their own thing.  I always kinda wished Armageddon events had this much planning and tie in.  So I find it interesting:

"Newsarama: Scott, you're heading toward a crossover event with both your Swamp Thing title and the Batman title. Plus you're co-writing the back-ups after having co-written a few other stories in the last couple years. Are you just naturally a collaborator when it comes to comics?

Scott Snyder: It's one of the things I love most about working in comics. I know it sounds cheesy, but coming from a literary background, the thing I hated the most about it, and the reason I've realized I'm tremendously happier in comics, is that I always worked alone. I mean, I loved getting to tell the stories I wanted and having creative breathing room in literary fiction, because no one's telling you what to write. So few people buy those things anyway, with short stories, that nobody is bothering you about it.

...

So I talked to the writers, and I said, "I don't want to force anything on you. The last thing I want to do is say we have to do some crossover when you guys are in the middle of your stories."
...
So it became about giving the writers plenty of lead time and asking who wants to be a part of this? And if you want to, and you want to create a story, here's the material for it. You have plenty of room. We won't be tyrants about what you have to do when."

I've only posted the snippets relating to what I found interesting but if you wanna read the whole thing and are interested in Batman in the New 52: http://www.newsarama.com/comics/scott-snyder-batman-night-of-owls-120111.html

This came up on my tumbler suggestions and it is mighty interesting from a character design approach. It is the beauty of movies that when they cast bit parts and background characters they need faces that fit the personality right away even if it is just for a line or two and then they aren't seen them ever again. The poster seems to have slowed down updates but still a good stock to choose from. So, if you need some caricature or character design study, this tumbler can help you out.

On the colorists don't like being ignored bit, it is kind of nice being sort of in the background. If something is glaringly off in the pencils or story, you take a lot of heat. People don't usually care what the colorist does unless it's a complete train wreck. This can be nice as you have a bit more freedom, depending on your client/editor. I'd much rather not be mentioned than seen as the person that ruined random comic issue #94848 haha

the sooner you start approaching your comics as films (or vice versa), the more tools you'll have available to you to tell your stories.

This is a very interesting article called How NOT to Write Comics Criticism.  The title is in reference to a three part series called How NOT to Write Comics which is equally interesting and may be of interest to all and is linked at the top of this article:

http://www.dylanmeconis.com/how-not-to-write-comics-criticism/

Really it's all about what comics are, the cliches people should avoid and probably most importantly, what a graphic novel actually is (hint: It's a comic).  Some of this may sound pretentious or trying to elevate comics to a scholarly level and God forbid, an artform, but it's an interesting read, give it a chance in your spare time.  In the past, I've heard Voiders come at the idea of comics from all sorts of angles so I'd staple this to their faces if I could.

http://www.comicsalliance.com/2012/10/26/women-of-marvel-panel-new-york-comic-con-2012/

Though I did not go to any panels while I was there, it seems that this one was truly excellent and it brings up a number of interesting points.

They mention that there are plenty of women colorists and editors rather than the more 'notable' positions of penciller/inker and writer.  That women seem more willing to fill the 'unsung hero' positions than males because "men want to be rockstars".  It makes me think of our members like Angieness so I couldn't help but bring it up.

And a second point that is personal to me is about how unwelcoming comic shops tend to be to female shoppers.  I have never been witness to this because the place I shop is a wonderful hangout spot that welcomes all ages and genders or whatever and is frequented by a wide spectrum of people.  So I'm a little proud that my favorite spot is the exception to the rule.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff I Found
Post by: Angie on Oct 28, 2012, 11:11 AM
Yeah, I hadn't noticed there were so many female colorists until a client asked me why most good colorists are female. I don't really know the answer to it as I just really like to color. It can be nice pretty much not being the rock star because there's less pressure. Colorists typically aren't even credited on the cover of the book so people don't notice us as much, which can be good or bad. (we're typically not blamed if a comic turns out badly)

I've never experienced any problems at comic stores, but then again most comic stores I visit have female staff so it's not shocking that a female would go in there.

Most jobs I've had I was the only girl on the book but there are two big exceptions.

TMNT Micro Series April-Marley was actually the first female to draw a TMNT book to my knowledge. Aside from the editor and I think the letterer, it was an all female staff with Barbara Kesel as the writer, Marley as the penciler/inker, and me as the colorist. The colorist on the main TMNT series right now is also a female. (another similar tidbit is I think Becky Cloonan was the first female to draw a Batman book which just happened a few months ago. Not 100% sure on this one but that's what I've heard)

My Little Pony:FIM-the staff is about half women. Katie Cook is the writer and I'm the colorist. Can't remember who the letterer is on this one.

In general IDW seems to be pretty good about having female staff on board.

So there was a study done on body diversity and how seeing various body shapes affect our perception.  It's an interesting study and all but this is an art website so I'm more interested in reference material.  So here you go, there's an interesting image at the top of this article:
http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2012/11/09/164789823/how-changing-visual-cues-can-affect-attitudes-about-weight?live=1%3Futm_source%3DNPR&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=20121109

And the study itself is interesting and mentions places to find references (like Miss England 2007 or Plus Size Next magazine, etc.) http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0048691#s4

So I'm not sure if you guys are aware of this Kickstarter or the drama that surrounded this but to give the gist of it:
So Alex deCampi and Jimmy Broxton were working on the sequel to her book entitled Smoke and in order to fund it went to Kickstarter.  There it became the sixth most well funded project and operated on a premise of complete and open honesty of where all the funds were going and what not.  Shortly after, deCampi fired Broxton and the project turned into a shitstorm.  It turned into a he said/she said debate between two highly respected people with good reputations mudslinging each other.  I just wanted to point this out because there's so much known about it that it really highlights the creative and collaborative process and how it can fail.  To be honest this highlights my own fear and trepidation about collabs and basically why I don't do them.

But it's really interesting to read:

For everyone else.

"Utopia"

This was really good. It is a Thriller/Mystery type series, and even better its about a comic that has some pretty big implications for the people that have read/know about it.

I really recommend watching it.

While I like that many major comics can be relatively easily turned into feature movies via Neal Adams' MotionComic technology or some other equivalent I feel they don't exploit the pages as well as they could.

This is a hand drawn comic being filmed and used as a popup/flipbook/multimedia and real time effects on the pages, all done in camera. Quite impressive and something maybe worth trying if only for its story boarding superiority and the lessons it could teach you about pacing.

Hey guys, I thought I'd share the script-writing programme that we use at uni for anyone interested! It's called Celtx and it's free to download. It is basically a program that formats scripts of various types! It has formatting for Film, theatre, storyboards, novels and of course comics!

http://celtx.en.softonic.com/

It looks a bit intimidating and confusing at first, but there's tutorials on youtube on how to use it and it's really simple once you know how to get around it.

Pretty much, but it does have options where you can add profiles for your characters to show development, add notes to make your scripts have more in depth information without cluttering the actual script, and even organise shooting schedules (if you were doing a film script for example).

A comparison.  They updated the colors on a Moebius work and added in all these computer aided effects and basically it looks like crap compared to the original.  The lesson here is that colors can enhance or fuck up a story.

It's a great article and it lines up with the picture that's been painted of the industry.  But reading the comments I can't understand why people get so butt hurt and defensive about something so obviously true.  Yes, crap will sell but that's always an exception.  If it were true that everyone could sell their own version of 50 Shades of Grey and make millions...well, there's no lack of imitators that's for sure and if you walk into a bookstore you'll see bookshelves full of the stuff.  Fanfiction does not make one a professional.

But so does a cut on the back of my ankle I got from would for a long walk the other day as part of my weight loss plan. Am I going to cry about it? No, but I'll curse at it a bit, put a band-aid on it, and keep walking. Because soon I'll be tougher and weigh less and it will have been worth it.

I hope that analogy worked...

THE SECRET WORLD CHRONICLE is a series of podcast novels written by Mercedes Lackey and Steve Libby.

"Emerging mysteriously during World War II, metahumans became icons of the best – and worst – humanity had to offer. Yet sixty years later, the world still suffers from war, greed and madness. Worse, man’s nadir of systematic cruelty returns with bizarre new weapons. The metahumans of Earth must find a way to defeat this powerful foe and discover what lurks behind the scenes – a secret world hidden from our own."

THIS IS THE COMPLETE iTunes FEED (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-secret-world-chronicle/id211347249?mt=2)
It contains books 1 - 6

I HIGHLY recommend this series, it makes for great listening while drawing, and it's about superpowered people! And secret alien time traveling space nazis!

words from the super awesome ANG LEE, translated by a very awesome friend of mine. he wrote this in 2006, after winning Best Director for Brokeback Mountain.

http://whatshihsaid.com/2013/02/26/ang-lee-a-never-ending-dream/
Quote
In 1978, as I applied for film studies at the University of Illinois, my father expressed his disapproval. He quoted me a statistic: ‘Every year, 50,000 performers compete for 200 available roles on Broadway.’ Still, I went against his advice and boarded a flight to the U.S. Since then, my father and I have had a strained relationship. In the last 20 years, we have spoken less than a hundred words to one another.

Some years later, when I graduated film school, I finally understood my father’s concern. It was nearly unheard of for a Taiwanese newcomer to make it in the American film industry. Beginning in 1983, I struggled through six years of agonizing, hopeless uncertainty. Much of the time, I was helping film crews with their equipment or working as editor’s assistant, among other miscellaneous duties. My most painful experience involved shopping a screenplay at more than thirty different production companies, and being met with harsh rejection each time.

That year, I turned 30. There’s an old Chinese saying: ‘At 30, one stands firm.’ Yet, I couldn’t even support myself. What could I do? Keep waiting, or give up my movie-making dream? My wife gave me invaluable support.

My wife was my college classmate. She was a biology major, and after graduation, went to work for a small pharmaceutical research lab. Her income was very small. At the time, we already had our oldest son, Han Lee, to raise. To appease my own feelings of guilt, I took on all housework – cooking, cleaning, taking care of our son – in addition to reading, reviewing films and writing scripts. Every evening after preparing dinner, I would sit on the front steps with my son, telling him stories as we waited for his mother – the heroic huntress – to come home with our sustenance (income).

This kind of life felt rather undignified for a man. At one point, my in-laws gave their daughter (my wife) a sum of money, intended as startup capital for me to open a Chinese restaurant – hoping that a business would help support my family. But my wife refused the money. When I found out about this exchange, I stayed up several nights and finally decided: This dream of mine is not meant to be. I must face reality.

Afterward (and with a heavy heart), I enrolled in a computer course at a nearby community college. At a time when employment trumped all other considerations, it seemed that only a knowledge of computers could quickly make me employable. For the days that followed, I descended into malaise. My wife, noticing my unusual demeanor, discovered a schedule of classes tucked in my bag. She made no comment that night.

The next morning, right before she got in her car to head off to work, my wife turned back and – standing there on our front steps – said, ‘Ang, don’t forget your dream.’

And that dream of mine – drowned by demands of reality – came back to life. As my wife drove off, I took the class schedule out of my bag and slowly, deliberately tore it to pieces. And tossed it in the trash.

Sometime after, I obtained funding for my screenplay, and started to shoot my own films. And after that, a few of my films started to win international awards. Recalling earlier times, my wife confessed, ‘I’ve always believed that you only need one gift. Your gift is making films. There are so many people studying computers already, they don’t need an Ang Lee to do that. If you want that golden statue, you have to commit to the dream.’

And today, I’ve finally won that golden statue. I think my own perseverance and my wife’s immeasurable sacrifice have finally met their reward. And it’s made me more assured: I must continue making films.

You see, I have this never-ending dream.

(also go check out my friend's blog for other cool brainy and pop culture-y stuff)

Also in regards to suits (since I see a lot of artists who commit travesties), it's worth to look at J.C. Leyendeckers illustrations on how to dress your men. Unless you want to dress your characters like tramps, be my guest. But remember the age old adage: Suits make a man!

Examples of properly dressed men and ladies in illustrations:

someone went and uploaded a whole bunch of old shaolin kung fu instructional tapes from the 90s: http://www.youtube.com/user/shemmati10yt/videos

they're all pretty long, but they've been subbed in english and there's some really good detailed bits about all the poses and forms and such. some really great reference material here, for real!

I went and scanned 1910-1940s dresses from the book 'Dreaming of Chanel' by Charlotte Smith.

Will later on scan the rest of the dresses from this book!

This is one of my favorite things ever: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/bestiary/ (http://www.abdn.ac.uk/bestiary/) The Aberdeen Bestiary is one of those famous Medieval zoology books written and illustrated by people who had no idea about the animals they were writing about or drawing, which makes for hilarious and fascinating results.

A little advertising about my own blog:
http://jackieloart.com/blog/

I'm doing a whole series about sitting behind artist alley at conventions called "Angry Artist Alley". If you have any questions about artist alley or interesting stories, feel free to message me about it and I might incorporate it in a post. Also if you do, leave an art website so I can link it to that too.

Mini Comics of the Month Club is happening again this year!

http://smallercomics.limitedrun.com/products/515672-minicomic-of-the-month-club-subscription-2013-2014

It's a pretty decent price to have a cool little comic in your mailbox every month! Some really great artists in the lineup too.

So it seems that there are people who have heard the name Greg Land and don't quite understand why this 'artist' is pretty much reviled and hated on the interwebs.  If you're not a regular reader of mainstream comics I can understand but this guy is a horrible example and someone who should not be followed by example.  Here's an article that explains it and links to other articles:

http://lubbockonline.com/hero/2007/08/13/why-Greg-land-is-a-rotten-excuse-for-an-artist#.UhjN1NK-oqd

If you want to know why this guy keeps getting work it's pretty simple, he completes his deadlines faster than any other artist (the importance of keeping deadlines in a work for hire scenario) and because his admirers claim he 'draws' pretty women.

^Never heard of that, though I don't read much mainstream material. That is the worst shit a 'professional' artist can do.

(On a side note, I totally recognize the Avalanche Journal! I was born in Lubbock,TX. :) )

Often on Void some of the most popular characters have been horrible people who you'd never want to meet in real life.  And often enough even the artists themselves are confused as to why this happens.  Here's a nice io9 article that breaks it down:

Not sure If this is the right forum thread to shove in, but I found this thing: http://www.comicsfix.com/

They're looking for submissions for their next round of comics. Basically, viewers pay $10 a month for an all-you-can-read comics webpage (i think it's just for mobile apps). The more readers attracted to the comic you posted on that site, the more revenue. It doesn't seem like a ton of revenue, but it doesn't hurt to try it, since they let you publish your own book or post it at other places if you wanted to.

this guy;

and I don't agree with or believe in this sorta material any more than the 'earth is hollow' or 'Mars needs women'....but I do enjoy reading it from time to time as if it were some kind of paranoid mythology or science fiction

also....by golly there are a LOT of neo-nazis on DevArt

Given DeviantArt's grasp on pretty much the entire spectrum of everything from basic mainstream culture, to sub-culture (both fandom and popular culture alike), counter-culture and just general what-the-fuckery, it would be more shocking if there weren't Neo-Nazi's on DeviantArt. I mean I was more surprised by Christian-oriented Sonic fanart then Neo-Nazis tbh.
