New Character: Barberella

New Character: Barberella
« on: Apr 19, 2014, 11:09 PM »
Meet Void City's new barber, Barberella:
work in progress:

She's a demon who possessed a pair of barber scissors and is out to give the citizens of Void City new haircuts. She'll only battle scar matches.

Name: Barberella (no last name)
Age: Her human/demon form is only a few weeks old, however the demon who possessed it is much, much older.

Personality: She's really friendly unless you refuse a haircut. Then she becomes psychotic and will do anything to get that hair styled. It doesn't matter what haircut the client wants, she cuts it HER WAY. Her physical 'stage' is how you determine her mood (stage 0 being happy, stage 1 being mad/excited/determined, and stage 2 as in going nuts). Sometimes people freak out when they realize she has four arms (she keeps two of them folded behind her back sometimes), but she's used to the reactions people get from that, and doesn't mind.
Likes: Good hair cuts
Hates: Bad haircuts, and bad hair days
Abilities:
-Incredible talent for styling hair.
-Since she has four arms, she's a fast worker too.
-She can make her opponent's hair suddenly grow when she snaps her fingers.
-Her specialty includes hair wash, perms, braids, shaving the head and face, trims, and hair dyes

Currently making the final character design sheet. Look forward to more :)

I think a skin-colored monster is fine. Clothing wise, you could opt for darker pants (maybe dark pink? magenta?). Barbers don't really have set uniforms, but the pants should definitely be longer I think. I do think the clothes are kind of plain, but I don't really see a problem with them (besides the length of the pants). Maybe go with an all white/pink color scheme, even for her shoes? I think that would be interesting.

Anyways I like her a lot! A hairstylist character sounds awesome.

Frickin' adorable-slash-horrifying :)) I think her outfit is not bad, and her Stage 2 face is really freaky-gross (which means its perfect for the character). Looking forward to pages! I can see lots of potential with this one--we need more scarrage in Void!

To the mods: are permanent hair cuts considered okay as a scar for a scar match?

This has happened before so I'm pretty sure it's ok.

I'm pretty sure the only instance where it happened was attached to another physical scar. I'm okay with it, but the other mods would need to provide input too.

it would fall under our active definition of a 'scar'....a permanent change that doesn't cripple or destroy the use of the character....I'd add the suggestion of a hair cut or a dye job....or even adding hair......like a beard or moustache...hair extensions or gluing a wig

as for the art and actual submission..I like this and look forward to the intro pages..I'd REALLY like to see you  making a definitive effort to work on your linework and underlying shapes/forms with this new submission..your layout and page design are quite strong..you are capable of it but are instead being lazy/rushing with your artwork...I actually find your layout/design largely weakened by your lack of attention to your rendering...some of your comics are hard to read or are much less enjoyable because of this and wouldn't be so with more effort or attention being paid on your actual drawing...based on your work so far since being accepted with your first character..so I hope to see somthing better or with more effort in the intro pages for your attempt at submitting this new character

short form....fun clever idea...not surprising because you write and design fun clever comics....I don't like or appreciate your work so far as much as I should because your artwork is sloppy and lazy and gets in the way of me appreciating and enjoying the good writing and design

YOUR WISH IS MY COMMAND.
I probably won't finish the intro comic for a while though, I've limited myself to night time to do void stuff, because day time is for other work (trying to figure out my pacing and stuff).

I don't think layout and page design is strong for me, I wish there was more information I can read on about how other artists approach it, or just spend a lot of time practicing drawing other comic's panels and understanding. A lot of the things I read go right to left instead of left to right, and I have to rewire my head a lot; I should just flip the layout image around, but that might screw shit too.

I've got my reasons for the last three comics ending up as insanely rushed, but will try harder to clean things up a bit more. Please gimme more input on my next comic to see if it's getting any better.

Also, I've spent two days working on the official character design sheet. Slow and steady...

tutorials books or videos do exist and you can track them down....but they are only so much help........the three best things to do for learning/polishing up on those areas are;

i) read/study as many comics from as many DIFFERENT types of artists as possible.... not just one type or style....also really study and break things you do like down....'why do I like this?' or 'why do I think this is succesful?' etc.

ii) make and use thumbnails for layouts/design and even a rough script can help...sketching things out ahead of time REALLY helps....this is also good advice for your actual drawings.....I can see on your figures and other drawings where you are just rushing ahead/pushing toget the lines out on your screen or 'eyeballing it' instead of sketching things out first....it also helps with warming up for your actual drawing

iii) practice as much as possible....even stuff that doesn't go past the thumbnail or sketch stages will be helpful to you

....and as part of my regular song and dance....if you absolutely have to draw with a tablet.....at least TRY to sketch/draw with paper with a real pencil a little bit too.....it really is different as it engages different parts of your brain..making real marks on real paper in real life ..you will draw differently and learn different things about your art from doing it......a sketch pad and a #2 pencil are not expensive or hard to carry around

I didn't draw with a tablet. That's been a misconception for a while, just wanted to tell everyone. It's a brush pen, a tiny ass rollerball, and a calligraphy pen. And whiteout. I should use more whiteout.

Yes I eyeball it sometimes. I have a better method about making cleaner work now, will try it out next time.

Updated character sheet design. I want to add a side/back view, since it's a little confusing about her unique anatomy

Very slick design, even more polished now :) Yeah I'd like to see a back view -- even if it just appears in the intro comic, as long as its somewhere.

Such an awesome character and the hair scar idea is very original!  Can't wait to see when you are done!  Good job! ;)

actually it is unusual anatomy....so it really should be on design sheet
