Art Jams / Re: M-M-MURDER JAM
« on: Aug 09, 2013, 09:57 PM »

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath and the phrase "giant two-headed lumberjack" came to mind and I knew it was to be so.
His name is Dirk.  He spends most of his time modifying flannel shirts to have two neck-holes.

I dreamt last night that I saw these being sold at a Walmart.  I think that's a good omen.

You should draw a comic like that for this thread haha

Your wish is my command!

I call it, "KJV vs. The Entire Population of Void City"

I was sitting and working on homework and I really didn't want to be.
So, since I've been harping about wanting to do a bunch of art jams when I get time I thought I'd do a couple pieces of fanart.
I didn't have my tablet with me so I just used my touch pad.  But I think it's basically Louvre-worthy.

(that was a joke)

EDIT: more, now randomly selected from the character list because it pleases me

EDIT: and more

EDIT: from now on i'm not even gonna announce that i'm adding more

This is one of my favorite things ever: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/bestiary/ The Aberdeen Bestiary is one of those famous Medieval zoology books written and illustrated by people who had no idea about the animals they were writing about or drawing, which makes for hilarious and fascinating results.

Hopefully they're recognizable.

Oh man, I see the tiny little KJV there!  That made my night ahahahaha

I always thought Void seemed like the most fun idea.  About seven years ago I tried to join with a...let's say "special" version of the character who would eventually evolve into KJV.  I think I have that still actually, let's see...
Here we go - not for the faint of stomach:

Yes, I used to draw her exclusively as a bird person (I still do sometimes, but more for nostalgia and because it's an excuse to kinda draw a bird).
Anyway, I knew the person who used to be here under the name Dingo, and she got me into it, but I just wasn't good enough.
Around six years later I curiously checked back in to see if Void was still around, and read through Angie's comics because I remembered when she was first accepted, and I knew I needed to try out again.  It seemed like the perfect place to practice and hone my skills, and maybe meet some folks.
So far, what keeps me here is that I've only been here a little while ha.  But I do really hope to do lots of comics with lots of people here, it's a lot of fun.  A lot of people here seem really cool and I'd like to be part of the community.
Lots lots lots lots.  Go to bed glassesserpent

I don't have time to do any test pages for the Tinker yet but I've been chipping away at his design here and there.  Here are a couple sketch portraits, and a design for his mouth.

And for good measure, a generic Star Serpent skull

11
Oops, I misunderstood!  Nonetheless, both those options sound particularly entertaining to me, using KJV or not.

12
Like many, I'm tempted to vote for the Prettiest Princess tournament, but mainly for the opportunity to be very, very mean to KJV hahaha.
I am intrigued by the King of Monsters option, though, it is indeed a tough choice.

Here are a couple sketches of KJV and Lu in traditional media, working on expressions and things.

And then a very very rough teaser for what I'm hoping will become an actual Beyond Battle comic!

Thanks for the feedback!
This is as good a place as any to say, when I updated my system software recently, it made my trusty old copy of Photoshop CS incompatible with my computer, which means that (when not working on graduate school homework) I'm gradually auditioning alternative programs to try and be able to do digital art, and so far they all feel like drawing while wearing boxing gloves.  I'll get access to a scanner before long and be able to post more pictures to flesh out this character and stuff, don't worry that I'm just lazily ignoring responses.

Bobo: Well his story is that he investigates old technologies in the future, and one turns out to be a time machine, and that's how he gets stuck.  Hopefully when I can get an intro comic together that'll be clearer.  Thanks!
Gregly: Funny story - when I first created Star Serpents back in...2009 I think, I declared I was never going to draw their lower jaw, for 100% arbitrary reasons.  That is pretty silly though, I'll get a sketch together.  More or less though it fits up underneath the star-shaped mandible, sort of like this picture (actually drawn by Seel, who was a member here once upon a time)

It would be less visible when closed though, and I haven't designed their teeth yet.
Crafty: Thanks!  Rad is a term I appreciate my creations being called, I must say.  I'll try to put some pages together soon!

While I'm here I might put up a couple other things for y'all to see...partially so I can feel good about drawing ha ha ha.

This is The Glasses Serpent.  I call him my stunt double because I don't want to draw myself.

And here are a couple other sprites that I'm proud of

And a little game mockup I made for a friend's birthday

I do a lot of different kinds of art, but I also dabble in sprites a la the video games I grew up on.  Since KJV has been on my mind lately, I tested out some new art programs (since I recently lost access to Photoshop) with a little clunky KJV walking sprite.

It's not my finest work, but I just do so enjoy drawing KJV being all angry and stuff.

As It Was Described
I just started this comic this January.  A bit of a far cry from what I've done so far on Void.

THE INCUBATOR / GlassesSerpent's character incubator thread
« on: Mar 15, 2013, 08:46 PM »

I had actually been planning to submit this character at the same time as KJV, last September, but decided I probably couldn't manage two characters at once.  Now that I'm rather steeped in Void though, I thought it might be time to dust him off and shop him a little bit, maybe for submission once KJV gets better established.
(I also felt like it might be a little self-indulgent to submit a Star Serpent, as they're a species I sort of carry around with me all over the internet).
At any rate, his bio at this point is just that he's a creature who lives on the earth many millions of years in the future, and comes from a particular caste of their civilization who investigates the remains of ancient technology to adapt for their use.  He winds up going back in time and lands in Void city, surrounded by all these tiny creatures he can't understand and freezing because the earth is much warmer in his time.
Encounters with him would mostly involve him being in the wrong place at the wrong time, as he lives huddled in dark alleys searching for food and warmth, and of course not getting on with the locals because he happens to be a giant lizard monster.  He would probably have a story arc involving figuring out a way to communicate with people and accidentally becoming a kind of bugbear for the people who operate out of dark and warm places like the sewer.
Also, he can hit things really really hard.

That's what I have so far.  It's a pretty rough idea so far and I'm not entirely sure how well it fits in with Void.  What do folks think?

Some not-really-hype for my fight with Jane Blonde coming up in a few days!
I went for something shorter and more light-hearted than last time, mostly involving KJV being unreasonable.

Years and years ago I did a webcomic at http://nighthawkdayhawk.comicgenesis.com, and fewer years ago I did another one at http://starserpent.smackjeeves.com, though neither is really a good representation of what I do anymore, especially since I focus on folks of the more humanly persuasion nowadays.  They still have a special place in my heart though.
I do have another informal comic going too but it doesn't have a site yet.
Actually KJV is a re-tooled version of a character from the first comic too, but oh so different now from back then.

New here? / Re: INTRODUCE YOURSELF
« on: Feb 23, 2013, 10:38 AM »
Oh, I guess I never introduced myself when I joined here a couple months ago.

On the internet I go by Garuda, though since I've taken up my current username some people call me Glasses; either's fine though I'd be more likely to remember that Garuda means me.
I'm 25 years old and have done comics for myself for years and years now, but always trying to improve of course.  I have super lofty ambitions of doing a single graphic novel someday and then slinking back into the shadows, but it'll be awhile before I'm ready for that.
Void has always fascinated me, and I'm excited to be here even if I only occasionally have the time to do a fight.  I have a biggish story plotted out for my current character though.

I'm pretty awful at using forums and being social, so excuse me if any awkwardness radiates out from me here.  But I'm still looking forward to doing more here.
