Title: Mentor and Trainee Roulette [REVIVAL]
Post by: Pocketmouse on Aug 25, 2015, 10:32 AM
CURRENT STATUS: IN BATTLE

MENTOR AND TRAINEE REVIVAL:
The purpose for this scheme is to have more confident members share their abilities and knowledge directly with members who want to level up their comic-making game. A mentor will take on a single trainee - every person teaches and learns differently, so each process will focus on being tailored to the needs of both teacher and student.
Mentors and Trainees get paired up based on what each individual expects from the process. Ultimately, Mentors are going to have the final say on who they take on as their Trainees, but Trainees can apply to the mentor of their choice. Each trainee will only be able to apply to one mentor at a time.
Once the process has started, you will be entered into a mentor/trainee-specific rumble roulette. This means both mentor and trainee with have a common goal to work towards. Only the trainee is formally entered into the tournament but - mentors: you will be expected to guide your trainee to victory!
After this, we’ll review the process and ask the participants to let us know how they got on with an open discussion in the thread, or an anonymous review for both mentors or trainees.

TIMINGS:
25 July to 8 August - mentor sign-ups
9 August to 16 August - trainee sign-ups
17 August - mentors must decide and announce any accepted trainees no later than this date. Mentors can formally accept trainees any time they like before this. Please post in this thread to confirm.
20 August - Roulette tournament starts (deadlines as follows):
1 week drawing time
1 week voting period
5 September - debrief and discussion in thread

MENTOR SIGN-UP APPLICATION FORM:
1-How much work you would expect to be doing: (Realistically, how much of your time can you offer them?)
2-How much work you would expect from your Trainee(s): (Will you be forcing them to work x amount of hours a day, or will you allow them to dictate the workflow?)
3-What you would like to see from your Trainee(s) when they apply: (to help you decide who to take on. Think about: their skill level?
how long have they been on Void? Do they have a character? Have they battled before?)
4- Your preferred method of communication with your Trainee(s): (Are PMS or discord the best way to contact you? If they're going to need a microphone or webcam to work with you, let them know!)
5- Do you have an area you consider your speciality?: (EG self-promotion, inking, writing, colouring, composition, time management
etc?)

I'll happily try out as a mentor on this. I don't contribute to Void no where near as much as I should these days anyway.

Time I have available:

I'll be starting back for my final year of uni starting in late September. But I am pretty easy to get in touch with and would make time for anyone I was helping.

How much work I would expect:

Im pretty relaxed and wouldn't demand an X amount of work weekly or anything. I understand that sometimes we have a week where we have time for lots of art and other weeks where other commitments are more important. I would just ask for someone who was engaged, focused on improving skills, and not going to mess me about. I'd also expect someone who committed to a deadline to stick to a deadline. Finally, I'd expect someone to be open to take constructive criticism.

What I'd like to see from my trainee when they apply:

if you don't have any existing character and/or comics and I'd at least need to see a deviantArt gallery or equivalent. I'm not too fussed on skill level really but would prefer someone who already has a basic grasp on anatomy and comics or someone willing to commit to learning. When it comes to digital skills, I use photoshop and I'm not familiar with SAI, manga studio or any other platforms. But I am pretty confident with Photoshop so I would happily teach a beginner.

Preferred method of contact: Facebook messenger would be my ideal way of messaging since I use the app and usually always carry my phone. However I have a webcam and microphone so would be able to Skype or live stream for more 'intense' tutorials. It would be best for the trainee to have a microphone available.

Do I have any specialities?:

Keep in mind that I'm also constantly learning/trying to improve. As I mentioned I am pretty confident with photoshop. I have various styles, my style these days is a lot more simple but if you look at my later work (most recent on Void being entwined beyond battle from last year) gives you an indication of what I can do as well. I also studied script-writing back when I studied TV and Film so I can help with writing too. To get a better idea of what I do these days you can visit my art blog on tumblr www.squimoo.tumblr.com

How many trainees?:

For now I could only take on one. But maybe in the future I could take on more.

I'll take a crack at this!

1-How much work you would expect to be doing: Despite going back to school soon, as well as managing a job at the same time, I'm willing to put as many hours onto this as possible. 3-5 days a week is something I can manage tho, so just hit me up on any IM and I'll get back to you.

2-How much work you would expect from your Trainee(s): For me, there's not a set 'amount' of work I'm looking for, but I do expect some stuff that I'm showing to trainees, to show up in some way in future drawings and comics. If we're one on one, I will be giving out some 'homework'.

3-What you would like to see from your Trainee(s) when they apply: Effort. That's all. I'm not expecting 100% results or a set skill level to be achieved in a short span of time, but I DO want to see that it's being taken seriously and being applied to their work to the best of their abilities.

4- Your preferred method of communication with your Trainee(s): Skype or private hangouts are cool, but if there's a more preferred way of communication just let me know.

5- Do you have an area you consider your specialty?: I'm more confident in teaching inking and comic page layouts, but sketching and cleaning up poses for characters, along with small tips in color values, are something I can help out in, too.

6- How many trainees would you like to take on?: Only 1 as of now. I'm already helping other people in this sort of thing when they ask for it, but things may change later, and I may take up more in the future.

I'd like to take a stab at this honestly. I remember how much it really helped me out to have people willing to talk to me outside of the chatroom and help me with my art, and I'd like to do the same for someone else.

How much time I have? I've got a full course load this semester, and I work on weekends, but I still have plenty of time to talk and such. I'm almost always able to be reached 24 hours a day via skype unless I'm either at my job over the weekend, or asleep. And even then I always try to respond on my breaks at work, and I check skype pretty much first thing in the morning.

How much work I'd expect from a trainee? I'm not about to be like "I WANT 3 HOURS A DAY NO EXCUSES" but I would like to know there's real effort going forth, you know? I understand being busy, so I'm not about to judge somebody for it, but I'd like to know they're willing to take the time to try to improve.

What I'd like to see? I'm okay with most beginner level people. What I really want to see, isn't that somebody is at a certain skill level, but more so that I can tell they are really trying and looking for ways to improve. Less about quality, more about passion to me. I figure if you have the passion, the quality will come in time, and I want to help with that.

My preferred method of communication? Skype. Like 200% skype. I've almost always got my phone on me, or am at my computer, so its one of the most reliable forms of keeping in touch I have, even more than text or actual phone calls, cause my service provider ain't the best, but between wifi and what not, I almost always have access to skype.

Any area I consider a specialty? I'd consider my best suits to be in things like composition and panel flow. While my text bubbles have been weak, I've always felt like I'm fairly good about keeping panels varied and interesting to look at, because I tend to take a more film style mindset to my comics, and I prioritize readability and panel flow over a lot of other things. Also backgrounds.

Amount of people I'd be willing to take on? One, maybe two at most. While I always make time to talk to people, and will always make sure I have time to talk to people I mentor if I do this, I am actually a busy dude, so if I had to do anymore than 2 people, and 2 is pushing it, I really don't feel like I'd be able to give the attention a person deserves.

Title: Re: Mentor and Trainee Trials
Post by: Jiisuri on Sep 02, 2015, 06:33 AM
I'll take this on with a different mentoring approach. *AHEM*

1-How much work you would expect to be doing:
Ok so here's the tricky part. I have uni going on and I live in the FUTURE side of the globe(the SEA region), so you'll have to hunt me down at weird hours of the day. I will however be around roughly the whole day on Monday/Tuesday and usually will be around on most weekends. Just don't be surprised if I'm not around or afk cos school might punch me in the gut or something at times.

2-How much work you would expect from your Trainee(s):
Here's another twist. I expect you guys to take the LEAST TIME POSSIBLE to achieve something I can look at without frothing in the mouth. Show me that effort achieved within an explosion of RAW UNINTERRUPTED WORK!

3-What you would like to see from your Trainee(s) when they apply:
A willingness to learn and not sass me or attempt to throw a million theories at me when I assign you the task! We will talk improvement and critique and theory shit when you are done with it!

4- Your preferred method of communication with your Trainee(s):
Catch me in the Deviantart chatroom we have. Hangouts if you want.

5- Do you have an area you consider your speciality?:
SPEED MAH BOI! UNDER ME, YOU SHALL TRAIN TO COMPLETE YOUR STUFF SPEEDILY NO MATTER THE COST! EVEN IF YOU FAIL YOU WILL LEARN! THEN YOU GET FASTERRRRR!

*ahem* yelling aside, I pride myself in sketching out stuff from my head really quick. Is really sketchy, but the idea is there and can be refined. I've seen too many people sketch WAY TOO SLOWLY for a sketch. Find me if you wanna undergo speedy sketch training!

6- How many trainees would you like to take on?:
I'd say 3 max.

Hi all! I'd like to throw my hat in the ring for a trainee spot!

I would like to request MyHats as my mentor if possible and my information is as follows:

Availability: I work a 9-5 job (EST) but have a few hours every night to work on stuff (more on weekends). I also sketch during the day and am happy to work for as long as possible/needed in my free time.

Skill: I've been casually drawing characters for awhile but I'm a bit of a beginner in terms of putting those characters in environments (my perspective needs some work for starters). Normally I just draw the character floating in space or in a gray room but I'm ready and willing to learn and happy to do whatever it takes!

Communication: I have FB messenger and also google hangouts and am available daily. If there's another method of communication that's preferred I'm happy to get/use whatever.

Tools: I use photoshop and Procreate (iPad app) for all my digital work.

Art examples: I don't have active characters yet but they are submitted and awaiting approval. Other examples of my work can be found on Tumblr thepawsdraws.tumblr.com (http://thepawsdraws.tumblr.com)I have an art tag there as well as a devart paintedpaws101.deviantart.com (http://paintedpaws101.deviantart.com)as well as an incubator thread here for my characters.

If there's any other info needed I'd be happy to provide it! Thanks!

All right, I'll throw my butt in.

1-How much work you would expect to be doing: Honestly, minimal. I'm pretty accessible for chat, etc., but I won't have time for concentrated periods of training time.
2-How much work you would expect from your Trainee(s): I expect trainees to be self-motivated, and therefore leave amount of work up to each trainee; however, I would like us to work together as a team (including trainees working with each other where appropriate and desired), so coordination is important
3-What you would like to see from your Trainee(s) when they apply: I'll accept any skill level, but I at least want to see evidence that you're willing to commit and stick to any goals/schedule we agree upon. Existing work is probably the best way to show this, but I'm flexible.
4- Your preferred method of communication with your Trainee(s): Google Hangouts would be ideal for group trainings/practice sessions; otherwise, I'm easily available through Skype, Google Chat, PM, or email.
5- Do you have an area you consider your speciality?: Handling perfectionism or other things that keep you from just working; managing time and expectations; finding your own voice
6- How many trainees would you like to take on?: I want to establish a group of trainees who can help each other just as much as I help each of them. I'll tentatively put my limit at 5 trainees, but could be swayed to increase that number if there's enough interest. Just be ready to work with your peers and receive less one-on-one interaction than you might with a different mentor.

I hope my "group of trainees" method is acceptable. I'm super busy, but I want to help, so this is the best way I can think of to accomplish that.

It's a cute bear! Real talk tho I'm busy and Idk what twists and turns life may take me on but FOR YOU SHEN, ANYTHING. Just hmu on skype whenever ur free and we'll figure something out : )
_

Also Just wanted to put this out, especially for people like Evi and Shen who maybe wanted to Mentor but this thread moved too fast-

I've had a lot of thinking about this nd going forward it will be better for anyone who wants to be a mentor to start their own thread. We'll need to talk to the mods about maybe having a mentoring sub-forum? Just do the threads don't clog everything else up. We'll still finish this trial just to be sure we've got the general format right.

But! the idea would be each mentor runs their own process however and whenever they like, so they could run it for three months or just one week if they wanted. This also means the mentors could go for it whenever they have free time, and trainees would have more opportunity's at different times (IE inksword having to go on a roadtrip wouldn't be an issue cause diff mentors would be running at diff times!)

So that will probably be the format this takes in the future : ) so don't worry if you missed it this time around.

AITE SO

Looks like It's nearly decision time Mentors!!! Some of you have already accepted some trainees, which is ace! I hope ur all getting connected and chatting with each other as a warm up ; )

THUS FAR it looks like
Hats: Wu and PaintedPaws,
and maybe Jiisuri: energy.

(Then there's possibly me: Shen and Skulls: me as time allows?) If anyone else wants to apply to Skulls, since I'm crazy busy so wont be taking much of her time, please go ahead!

We've still got some people interested in trainee-dom, who are as yet unclaimed by a mentor. If there is a mentor willing to take on INKSWORD, even though they do not have access to art materials for a short while, please let us know!

Same goes for DANSOME, who doesn't have a preference of mentor either, so any mentors without applicants should snap up these trainees, please!

Since seeing so much vibe around this thread we're discussing running another go of this alongside a rumble roulette. Trainees will have to take part in the roulette and mentors will help guide them through the process.

We've still got a few of the ins and outs to discuss but please watch this space :)

First post updated as below:

5- Do you have an area you consider your speciality?: (EG self-promotion, inking, writing, colouring, composition, time management
etc?)

I'll sign up as mentor

MENTOR SIGN-UP APPLICATION FORM:
1-How much work you would expect to be doing: (Realistically, how much of your time can you offer them?)
Its sort of up in the air since I'm job hunting but I'll try to add a couple hours a week, I can work with them to put together a schedule or we can wing it based on whose not too busy
2-How much work you would expect from your Trainee(s): (Will you be forcing them to work x amount of hours a day, or will you allow them to dictate the workflow?)
Depending on their level and what they want to improve at will have different levels of commitment, a couple hours a week should be alright
3-What you would like to see from your Trainee(s) when they apply: (to help you decide who to take on. Think about: their skill level?
how long have they been on Void? Do they have a character? Have they battled before?)
Preferably someone who has battled so I can get a sense of what they would need to be working on, any skill level
4- Your preferred method of communication with your Trainee(s): (Are PMS or discord the best way to contact you? If they're going to need a microphone or webcam to work with you, let them know!)
Discord, if we doin colouring a google hangout would be good, webcam not necessary
5- Do you have an area you consider your speciality?:
colouring, maybe story pacing

2-How much work you would expect from your Trainee(s): (Will you be forcing them to work x amount of hours a day, or will you allow them to dictate the workflow?)
My trainee will likely dictate the workflow, but it's useful to set some sort of goal, which in this case would need to be daily, since it's 1 week deadlines. I'll be working on my own comic at the same time, so we can sort of keep each other going.
3-What you would like to see from your Trainee(s) when they apply: (to help you decide who to take on. Think about: their skill level?
how long have they been on Void? Do they have a character? Have they battled before?)

I don't care how long you've been here, or whether you've battled before, though familiarity with how the site works is a plus. Obviously, having a character is kind of a prerequisite, unless the ensuing tourney is to be an artist battle, in which case it's not a factor, and I'm happy to help with character ideas. Beyond that, I would prefer some general technical proficiency. We're working on the comics making process, not learning to draw. For that, Loomis is a far better teacher than I.
4- Your preferred method of communication with your Trainee(s): (Are PMS or discord the best way to contact you? If they're going to need a microphone or webcam to work with you, let them know!)
Discord is the best general method, but I'm all for skyping and whatnot if you're working traditionally or just hate typing or whatever.
5- Do you have an area you consider your speciality?: (EG self-promotion, inking, writing, colouring, composition, time management
etc?)

I think I give pretty good writing feedback, and I'm a good editor. Layout and composition are the hardest work of making any comic, but I have a pretty good eye for it. I will physically beat bad fonts and word balloons out of you. :3

Know what? I'm free to be a mentor.

1-How much work you would expect to be doing: (Realistically, how much of your time can you offer them?)
I am on almost all the time except when I am sleeping. That said, I am on a southeast asian timezone, so you might have to seek me at the late of night.

2-How much work you would expect from your Trainee(s): (Will you be forcing them to work x amount of hours a day, or will you allow them to dictate the workflow?)
The schedule depends on what kind of person you are. I'll be asking you how you intend to work on it, and I'll throw you deadlines for certain milestones based on it.

3-What you would like to see from your Trainee(s) when they apply: (to help you decide who to take on. Think about: their skill level? how long have they been on Void? Do they have a character? Have they battled before?)
The most important thing I want to see is the absolute willingness to better yourself and get this thing done to the end. I want to see this bear fruit. I'd also prefer that the person under me actually made sure they do indeed have time and energy to do this. If you currently have a day-job crunch period, or family matters to attend to, you really shouldn't be doing this right now.

4- Your preferred method of communication with your Trainee(s): (Are PMS or discord the best way to contact you? If they're going to need a microphone or webcam to work with you, let them know!)
Discord. I'm on the Entervoid server.

5- Do you have an area you consider your speciality?: (EG self-promotion, inking, writing, colouring, composition, time management
etc?)

Comic panel and dialogue pacing. I'm also an alright person to bounce story off of. Other than that, I can offer advice over pretty much anything and point out any major fixes to make.

MENTOR SIGN-UP APPLICATION FORM:
1-How much work you would expect to be doing: (Realistically, how much of your time can you offer them?)
few h a week! I would expect 3-4 updates per week

2-How much work you would expect from your Trainee(s): (Will you be forcing them to work x amount of hours a day, or will you allow them to dictate the workflow?)
however many hours it would take them to complete the stages of work (it would be different depending on how many pages they want to make!). I would more likely give them completion goals rather than timescale goals.

3-What you would like to see from your Trainee(s) when they apply: (to help you decide who to take on. Think about: their skill level? how long have they been on Void? Do they have a character? Have they battled before?)
have the basic comics skills and finished pages to prove them! I don't mind if they don't have a character or hadn't battled

4- Your preferred method of communication with your Trainee(s): (Are PMS or discord the best way to contact you? If they're going to need a microphone or webcam to work with you, let them know!)
email or discord PMs - can also arrange to video or voice chat if they would like that. :)

5- Do you have an area you consider your speciality?: (EG self-promotion, inking, writing, colouring, composition, time management
etc?)

Experimental forms are my favorite thing out there and silent comics and horror stuff (but this doesn't mean that if you ware interested in something else I will not be able to help you!). I deal with all aspects of creating in my own work so will be able to help with every stage. I have a masters in comics creating and currently doing a PhD,  so you are getting a pretty damn sweet deal :P For that reason I can also talk to you about comics theory if it's something that you are interested in, or recommend lots of other sources.

I hope I don't scare y'all away! Angieness mentored me YEARS ago and it was one of the best experiences I had on the site and I would love to give back! :)

We'll just make it an ourobouros of mentor/trainees.

Haha there's nothing stopping anyone from being both if they want to, other than time commitments. ;)

On a more serious note, please keep in mind that usual battle rules for the roulette will apply. They'll just be regular battles between the trainees, with the mentors on hand to verbally advise. This means that hands-on assistance, such as redlining, isn't allowed on any work to go into the battle. A mentor could draw out what they would recommend and the trainee could draw from that, but direct work by the mentor would be unfair.

Thanks to everyone who's applied so far!

Good point on redlines, Pomo. Yeah, if I ever catch anyone using my drawovers in the final page, you’re getting the stick.

Thanks to everyone who signed up to be a mentor!
Potential trainees, now it's your turn!
Fearn, Jiisuri, Heathen and Shen have offered their guiding hand in battle - please post on this thread if you'd like to be a trainee, and who you'd ideally like to have mentor you!

Ahhhh. Well, I really want to keep leveling up, so I'm gonna try being a trainee. Hope that's okay.

I struggle mostly with panel composition, storytelling, and pacing. Sometimes dialogue. And framing scenes.

Based on their mentor profile about experimentation and their more strict update deadline, I think I'd like to choose Fearn if at all possible. Although all the mentors have something nice to offer. I do not know if we get second choices, but if we do, I'd also love to work with Heathen.

Thank you for considering me!

Okay, giving this a shot anyway.

Writing's a huge problem for me, so I'd at least like to find a way to improve upon that.  Time management's another thing worth looking into improving as well.

That said, I'm fine with anyone,, but if I really had to choose, I guess I'd go with Jiisuri.

The prospect of one week terrifies me as I struggle with 4 weekers and getting around 4-5 pages but I need to try this. I work full time but would like to screen share on google share and discord is by far the best way to contact and keep in touch with me. I use all digital and currently using clip studio. I get off work at 8 PM EST monday- wednesday, I have thursdays off, get off work Friday 6 PM, and Saturdays 3 PM

I will be aiming for 2 fully inked pages. So my focus would be on need helping making construction of characters; which i'm terrible at doing consistently, and have no idea what I'm doing when I break down characters into shapes or how to really apply that. however I have managed to salvage that but I end up making it worse with my inks which are also really bad. So the main things i need help with are inks and construction and lines of action. The things I need the least help with are writing and layouts (only because I constantly redo them so I will need help anyways since I know I need to redo my writing a couple times or at the very least the dialogue). while i do also really need help with coloring and shading it's not feasible to try and do that in this time for me. I'm also super slow so really i would like ways to do my stuff smarter since I feel like a lot of what I do is just really inefficient.

For mentors Heathen and Jiisuri both have inks I like but I'm so poor with them pretty sure any mentor can help level up my stuff.

I would like to apply as a Trainee.

I struggle mostly with making characters interact with the environment around them, and giving them dynamic poses and lines of action. I tend to start off invested, and then slowly drop off and procrastinate the longer I have to stay focused, so having a mentor to kick me back into action would be really helpful.
Also I tend to read more indie comics and zines, so I don't have much experience with Industry Standard comic rules and formats.

My first choice for a Mentor would be Heathen, since I feel like he would be able to give me the blunt honesty I need to improve. But anyone else would be good too, if you believe you know things I need to learn from.

Awesome I welcome it, sides the idea of a 1 weeker is a scary prospect as well but I still need to go for it.

Thanks Shen and Heathen for making selections.

Jiisuri asked me to pick for him, so since a energy was the first person to request Jii by name, Jii will mentor Energy.

Fearn is MIA right now, but as the deadline has passed, I'll pair Fearn with Yarn witch, and Yarn was the first person to ask for Fearn by name. Fearn will mentor Yarn.

You'll be put into two battles, which I've randomised as below:
ASTRO VS ENERGY
ARTS VS YARN

You have 1 day to decide between yourselves if you want to use characters, and who you'd like to use and post in here letting us know. If we don't hear by then, then the mods will set these up as artists battles.

Thanks and good luck!!
