Also, praise be to whatever powers are up there for manga really getting big in the States.Ê Before, I'd have to hunt for the titles I wanted at import bookstores--now I can just run to a Borders and grab the titles I want.Ê Of course, this can be a problem, too (Tokyopop tends to license a lot of crap just to license it and put it out 'cause people will buy manga), but companies like Viz tend to put out a metric shit-ton of quality material.
The reason Tokyopop has second grade titles in the US is that Viz has better established connections with the publishers in Japan than they are. Because of that, of course the Japanese publishers like would give their more popular titles like One Piece, Naruto, Bleach etc. etc. to Viz first and leave the second grades for Tokyopop. However, even though their situation is like that in US, Tokyopop can still get the main titles in other countries like their branch in Germany and distrubute those titles in that region. Interesting how manga gets spread in the west.
Still, I have to admit, I prefer Viz's tranlastions than Tokyopop's, it's a no wonder that the Japanese rule them out for the best.
