EnterVOID Anthology Cover Contest (CLOSED)

EnterVOID Anthology Cover Contest (CLOSED)
« on: Nov 05, 2011, 12:10 PM »
As you may have seen, a Void Anthology is in the works and it's going to need a cover! If you haven't heard about it, you can read all about the anthology at http://entervoid.com/board/index.php?topic=11786.0

The Prize

the winner will get their work as the cover which is a nice way to show off and get your work promoted.

All of the covers you guys make will show up in the book, but only one will get to be the actual cover.

Deadline
January 5th, 2012The deadline has come and gone, if anyone still has an entry they're hanging onto and wants to squeeze in you can, just show me that you have something.

Who Picks the Winner?
I will be choosing the winner. I will be consulting the council for their opinions, but I will have the final say. No amount of kittens, chocolate, coffee, or fanart will be able to influence my opinion. I will be choosing based on color choice, clarity, how eye catching it is, solid execution, and how appropriate I feel it is for the book. (because of this, I will not be making a cover myself)

Requirements

-Entry must be in color and done in RGB
-Must be 300 dpi
-Must be 7X10.5 if it is not a wrap around
-You may do a front cover or an entire wrap around, information on wrap around covers can be found at http://ka-blam.com/printing/index.php?page=Specs_trades
-You may do the text if you choose so, if you do, it must contain "EnterVOID Anthology Volume 1" on it. Text must be clear and fit the aesthetics of the cover. So obviously no scribbles/comic sans.
-Collaborations are fine, just don't use this thread to set them up.

Here is the part that will separate the weak from the strong! The big challenge with this cover is the cover cannot be character based. This is because I want the book to feel like it's one big communal project. A sweet pin up of Agent Black and James riding on the back of Angela Rudell in her monster form as they fight a herd of the Baron's zombies does not reflect community. Try to create a design that you feel represents Void as a whole, it can be as simple as your interpretation of the city. In the event you do want to do a large city shot, characters are fine, I just don't want them as the focus. If you do use anyone else's characters, you must have them fill out this form http://www.hbreckelcolors.com/images/contractrough.pdf

The only other case where characters are allowed is if you do a shot of a ton of characters. This is to just prevent someone from doing a pin up of 5 characters doing cool shit. Again, this is a representative of Void as a whole community. And when I say a ton, here are examples

http://entervoid.deviantart.com/gallery/?set=22547652&offset=72#/d9nfsv
http://entervoid.deviantart.com/art/VOID-Banner-epic-13280973?q=gallery%3Aentervoid%2F22547652&qo=87
http://entervoid.deviantart.com/art/Epic-Poster-Jam-Entry-144235439?q=gallery%3Aentervoid%2F22547652&qo=74

Or you can try to create a new crest like Lysol's here

If you wanted to do something that focused around Void, here are some great examples of comics with covers that fit that criteria. Again, you can include characters in this sort of cover, but notice they are not the focus, they are part of the environment. It's a far cry from a flashy pin up of two characters stabbing each other

Cool I will have to think of something cool for this. Maybe get a little experimental.

Sweet! Already got an idea fresh in my mind. Just hope I can execute it.

But yeah, two questions;

How many entries may we submit?
And in terms of doing the title/text logo, may we use fonts from places like blambot?

You may submit as many entries as you like. Due to how challenging this will potentially be, the more entries the better.

And fonts from blambot are fine. Really with the fonts I would just like to see something that is legible and fits the cover. Just obviously avoid the big design no nos like Comic Sans, Papyrus, Old English anything, etc.

What would be the estimated width of the spine?

I can't give the exact size of the spine at the moment until I know the final page count, I'm estimating 0.44-0.56 inches

Dumb question: Where do we need to send our cover submissions? Do they get posted here, or are they emailed to you?

Post it here! I doubt anyone is going to steal ideas and it might get the ball rolling on submissions.

Werkin' on it. It's in a real rough, rainbowey state, only found time to start it yesterday. GONNA BE A MAD RUSH TONIGHT AFTER WORK I THINK.

And yes there was some sort of method to my madness as to who I placed where on this thing haha.

Theo: Lovely! I'd just move the entire thing a bit above so that you have some breathing below the sink.

Orange: Lookin good, BUT the middle down chain is annoying the hell of me, it just looks placed for convenience sake, contrary to the other chains, it's not matching the void padlock.

Yeah it was bothering me too, I might just have Syke overlap Basil or vice versa and keep it open instead.

Well if you end up needing more time let me know, don't want you to have to rush it to meet the deadline.

The same goes for anyone, as long as you show me progress I will give you more time.

Gonna axe the chains I think. Finally got the text sorted out, simplified the emblem because of the way I did the text etc etc. Colours and other stuff is still not exactly final.

It's...getting there.

Coming along nicely! The deadline has come and gone, it looks like we only have 2 entries. If anyone else wants to squeeze in let me know, otherwise this is it once Orange finishes his! Will add the two entries to the first post once Orange is finished and the council will decide on the winner.

Orange, it looks great!
A few things to think of though: I love details as the next person, and they are great in here, but Imo the colors also being a fruit salad as this might get AGINST the cover, too busy you know? (Still nice tho)
I have a sugestion, if your eyes can still take it, why not use the grayscale version of your tumblr post, but with the entervoid logo colored? I think it could be neat (I mean, how I imagine it in my head with your artwork). Worth trying!
