Title: FAQ: Questions About Void? Post Yours Here!
Post by: Angie on Jun 09, 2010, 10:04 AM
Questions About Void?

I often get asked the same questions a lot, questions that aren't in the FAQ or the answers just aren't readily available at the site. So I thought it might help to just have a handy little informal FAQ on the boards where people can ask stuff and get answers and new people will have a little easy to find reference for questions they may have!

You can pretty much ask anything about Void, it doesn't have to be technical! Maybe you just want to know what a now inactive artist is up to or you have questions about what happened in a recent battle. Anyone is welcome to ask a question and anyone is welcome to answer a question.  I'll compile the questions and accurate answers in the first few posts. To make things easy, I may edit the answers into your initial post.

All that I'm asking is no trolling, no flame bait, and no drama, any of that will be removed. This thread is to help out new and old Voiders alike so let's keep it clean!

If you don't want to post the question yourself and are afraid of people thinking you're a n00b or something you can totally PM me your questions as well!

How are the Ranks calculated?
We use a combination of elements that are each weighted equally to rank both Characters and Artists - comics completed, matches won, and scores earned from voting.

Each of the three pieces counts as 1/3 of the final score, with Characters and Artists being ranked by this score in descending order.

How characters are ranked has changed several times since VOID began, with each revision to the calculation was an attempt at best capturing a Character's or Artist's standing in the community.

I want to start a special event, tournament, 3 way, etc.! How can I do this? Do I have to be a mod to start one?

Nope! All you have to do in order to start an event is send Toast a private message (http://entervoid.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1) For special events and 3 ways it's preferred that you already have the people to do it ready to go.

If you want to start a tournament, it's very helpful to outline what you have in mind or write out a little test post, for example

"THE BEST TOURNAMENT EVER

The best tournament ever is to see who is the best ever. There will be X participants duking it out across X rounds! Winners receive a special title and money!

Deadline to sign up is at X and drawing time begins X
Drawing time is X amount of time
Defaulters/incompletes get X punishment"

If the mods see you're serious and have everything laid out already, it's very likely your tournament will come to life. It never hurts to show that you have people interested in doing it as well!

For more on this, please see Roflqu's How to Guide (http://entervoid.com/index.php?topic=11414.0)

I really want to cameo someone else's character in my battle! Do I need permission?

The short answer is no.

The long answer is you don't have to, but it never hurts to contact the artist for permission. Most VOIDers are fine with their characters being cameo'd in other comics, but every once in a while someone doesn't like it. If the character plays a significant role in your comic it's a good idea to give the artist a head's up.

But regardless, there is no rule saying no cameos allowed and there is no rule saying you have to get permission.

A Void fighting game/animation/movie would be awesome! Has anyone ever done one? Can I do one?

A Void fighting game has been talked about numerous times on the site. While some sprites and backgrounds have been made in the past, a full fighting game has never been finished.

As for an animation or movie, Mamoru (http://entervoid.com/index.php?action=profile;u=365) actually did a rather nice and complete Void animation. I still have the file, but would need his permission to throw it on Youtube or something. That's the only one I'm aware of beyond the old Flash battles.

You are more than welcome to attempt to do any of the above, provided it's not for sale because then it gets messy copyright wise.

Has anyone ever released a Void book? Can I do one?

The closest there's ever been to a VOID book is the Anthology (http://entervoid.com/index.php?topic=11786.0).  Prior to that, there was the Pulpo line of anthologies, which featured many VOID artists, but the stories were not VOID related.

As for making your own or throwing all your battles into a book, this is where it gets complicated. If you were wanting to do an actual VOID comic for profit featuring your VOID character, you can, but you can't really feature anyone else's characters. For example, if I wanted to release and sell a book that stars Angie, my own character, and features no other VOIDer's creations, I can (and have (http://indyplanet.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=5578)!) as I am tied to no one else's copyrights. But your battles feature other people's characters so unless you're wanting to track down a bunch of people, get their permission, and potentially share the profits with them, that's a no go.

I found *insert random bug or problem* on the site! What do I do?

Post them in the handy dandy Bug Thread (http://entervoid.com/index.php?topic=10753.0) and Toast will address the problem as soon as he can. Just remember that some problems may take longer to fix than others so it can be a while if it's something effecting all the battles.

My battle failed to upload! What do I do?

There's a nice little guide I wrote up here (http://entervoid.com/index.php?topic=10641.0), that covers most of the problems the uploader may have and how to fix them. If none of the solutions work then toss me a private message on the boards.

My character is listed as inactive/retired, how can I unretire them?

You can go to your character's page and in the upper-right is the current status.  Mouseover on that, and click the link for Unretire. In some situations, your character was retired or made inactive because you lost a scar match and never updated the design sheet. In that situation, obviously update your character's design sheet.

If, for whatever reason, you're just unable to unretire your character, contact Toast (http://entervoid.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1) as he is the only one with the power to make characters active again.

I'm new and just got in, how does VOID canon work?

There is no official VOID canon. Part of the fun of the site is doing whatever you want. Some people like myself have storylines going on, but no one can force anyone to follow a strict storyline.  Also, if you lose a battle you are not obligated to follow the story of your opponent. You can make whatever you want canon, just try to be classy about it.

Do the characters have to actually fight in the comic?

Nope! It's actually encouraged to think outside the box. The content is all up to you, the only requirement is that both characters are present somewhere in the comic.

Do I HAVE to show my opponent's character in the comic?

Yes, or else the comic doesn't go up and you receive a default. You're more than welcome to do Beyond Battles for solo comics!

Do my comics have to take place in Void City?

Nope! You can have your comics take place anywhere!  Despite being a crowd favorite, the use of VOID City within the comics produced for the site is in no way mandatory. Comics may take place in any setting as desired, and you may use the setting of VOID City when and if or however you choose.  Want your comics to take place in the 50s in Russia? Go for it! Want your comics to take place in an alternate dimension on Planet Kittens? Go for it!

Save for certain tournaments or special match types selected by the Artists, comics can be about anything, take place anywhere, and be about almost anyone and where anything can happen.

I want to submit a character team, is that okay?

That's totally fine. Just make sure that you put however many characters you have on the design sheet. Also, you don't have to put both/all the characters into every battle. Just obviously, one of them needs to be present.

Is there a Void school, police force, mall, etc.?

This kind of goes hand-in-hand with there not being an official VOID canon (http://entervoid.com/index.php?topic=11260.msg189942#msg189942) as well as having comics take place wherever you want (http://entervoid.com/index.php?topic=11260.msg189945#msg189945). If you're wanting to use places other people have made, there's a thread with some of them here (http://entervoid.com/index.php?topic=7093.0)

As for a police force, the somewhat official police force of VOID is the VCPD and some of the information can be found here (http://entervoid.com/index.php?topic=9946.0)

But again, Void is what you make of it, so you're welcome to make your own locations.

I lost my character in a death match, what now?

You make a new one.

Once upon a time, artists were allowed to resurrect dead characters, but that's not the case anymore.  Dead characters can still be used in Beyond Battles, but not regular matches except very rare occasions like the Speed Resurrection Tournament.

If you're attached to a character at all, don't put them in a death match. Same goes for scar matches, if you don't want to deal with the results don't do it in the first place.
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!
Post by: Angie on Jun 09, 2010, 11:36 AM
I already have a character in but want a second one! Is that okay?

Sure! But only if you've battled several times with your previous character. In the past, some artists would continuing making new characters but would never use them, so we frown on artists that make new characters without using their existing ones. If you have some battles under your belt with your previous character, then go for it.

Don't try to go overboard though, one of the only people that has successfully had a ton of characters and used them all several times is Hiemie. So unless you're Hiemie it's usually a good idea to just stick to 1-2 characters.

there no art skill level, right?

I mean beside at least knowing how to draw
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!
Post by: (Pi) on Jun 14, 2010, 02:09 PM
"Knowing how to draw" is a little vague, so I'll try and clarify.

We want to know that you can draw comics, which means you should be able to render humans and environments consistently, and have some level of "completeness" to your work. We're not looking for professional level skills at all, we just want to make sure that you'll be able to functionally illustrate comics for the site on a deadline.

If you're still wondering about what we accept, take a look around the fighters currently on the site. There's a pretty diverse assortment of styles and skills, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Set up a character in the Incubator, and people here will help you tune up whatever you need.

Make whoever you want mayor or seize the title for yourself! Since the last official mayor's artist hasn't been around on Void in a long time I think it's safe to say someone can take the title for themselves at this point. Or people can make a tournament and battle over who gets to be it.

So, in anticipation of the upcoming Chia-hua battle I went to the character section to see how he stacks up and noticed that he didn't appear on the page until I enabled everyone past and present. This confused me because he's clearly active and yet he seems to have no rank. It's fun to see where my character stands in relationship to other characters, but it loses some of its charm when I find out that in addition to the 200 retired or dead characters who score higher than me there are also characters still competing who humbly outrank me in silence.

Anyway, the question is, why do some people have no rank at all?
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!
Post by: (Pi) on Sep 09, 2010, 04:02 PM
Chia-hui is currently listed as "Retired," even if he's in a battle right now. I think carlito must have retired him and not changed that status when he got in another challenge.

as for no rank at all, i think there's a difference (technologically) between being "active," "inactive," and "retired." not totally sure though, kevin will have to explain it further.
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!
Post by: Angie on Sep 09, 2010, 04:24 PM
Inactive=you've been inactive for 6 months or more
Retired=you've intentionally retired your character or been forcibly retired due to a loss in a scar match
Active=you've been active in the past 6 months

Chia-hui is currently listed as retired because Carlito retired him after submitting his battle.

Characters that have gone into inactive lose their number rank on the ranks but if you click "view all' on the ranks you can see technically where everyone stands, just you lose your number when you become inactive/retired. If you want to see the rank of characters that are currently active/counted towards the ranks you simply just click characters and that's anyone that is counted on the ranks. Even if the inactive people don't have a number, what you see on "view all" or "view retired" is the accurate listing of where everyone is overall.

So right now Angie is #1 on the ranks but that is only because the 3 people who are above her went into inactive/retired so she is technically ranked 4th overall. But because she's an active character she is first on the active characters board.

That make sense? haha

If you want to know your rank just look at the active characters list since there's a good chance a large chunk of the people who are no longer listed aren't coming back so you shouldn't worry about beating them.

Actually, Inactive is forcibly retired to scar matches or other circumstances. Retired is done passively and you can trigger it yourself. To become Un-inactive, you need to contact Toast after doing what was required of you.

It's really odd that it's that way then, since 6 months without activity would mean being inactive technically. The names should probably be switched around.

I am wondering something about the GO FOR BROKE and Art Jams sections of the forum that has been bugging me from when I started to post.

I am thinking of posting some more of my work and I am wondering if I am putting as much work in them as I should. So I was wondering:

When you post something in the GO FOR BROKE how many redraws do you before you post it? And for that matter how many redraws and redesigns do you go through on a finished or at least cleaned up piece for the Art Jams?

Any input on this would be great.
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!

Go For Broke is just your own personal little hellhole.  You can put half finished sketches or whatever in there, don't have to be finished.  You can have progressions or whatever.  Art Jams usually are finished and polished, though it depends on the theme and rules of the jam.  Just put up whatever you feel comfortable putting up.

How many iterations or redraws do you go through before you are satisfied with it? I mean just a personal quota as I know it varies for everyone.

Depends on the picture, sometimes I can nail it in one go, sometimes it takes a few sketches before I have a suitable base.
That's just me though, I don't think anyone is going to give you a solid answer on that. Just try and push yourself with each picture to make it look better than your last and you'll figure it out on your own how many you need to do.

Redraws are for most part pointless really, unless you have a boss telling you to do it, such as a company, paying thing.

Your drawing proccess should be:
-Idea thinking
-Idea get (if it's a comic, this should be your script instead)
-Idea roughed up (THIS step is where you're supposed to redraw as much as you need untill you get a composition done, no need for a detailed drawing here, you can do small versions, you call it Thumbs oftenly)
-Idea drawn. Try NOT starting over. After finishing it up, see what were the good and the bad points, and then apply what you learned in the NEXT drawing.

The general idea is: right now you're drawing for free, for purely experimental purposes, so yo ucan fail as much a possible in order to grow. The other detail is that working in an old piece is OVERWORKING, so always move on. The next one will be better than your previous one, and eventually everything you did now will HOPEFULLY look like shit in an year. That will mean you got a lot better in the meantime.

Hey all! I'm new to the site and just got my character approved, but before I battle I wanted to ask about a couple things if that's cool!

1. When you challenge someone to a battle, are you supposed to message them first to ask about their availabilities and etc.? If not, how do you choose an appropriate length of time for battles to take place in?

2. I understand the concept of the hitlist but I'm not really sure I understand it on a social level. What kind of message do I send to people when I put them on my hitlist, is the connotation negative, as in "I want to beat you and your character" or is it sort of just telling the person you want to do a battle against them in the near future, or is it potentially both? Just wanted to know since there are a few artists I like and would like to battle at some point.

Thanks in advance!

1.Nope! If they're not available they'll just decline it. If you're specifically interested in anyone just toss them a PM if you want to be courteous. For your first battle I recommend the longest deadline you can get.

2.I always take it as either someone wants to "watch" my work or they're interested in battling me. I always take it as a positive.

Oh no, another noobie xD I'll try to be as discreet as possible until I find my feet, lol

Right my question is thus;

If you have friends who are writers but not artists, and they're interested in taking part in VOID, can you enter as a writer/artist team? Everything is collaborative, one writes/scripts, whilst the other illustrates, could even be a two-character team, etc.
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!

They'll first need to create an account on Void. It is possible for them to do collabs with you by setting up collab beyond battles through Toast once a character gets in. I would think it's not outside the realm of possibilities to do actual battles like that, but it again has to be set up through Toast, same with submitting a character that way.

http://entervoid.com/character.php?id=1743 is a writer with a character

*edit-oh yeah there was http://entervoid.com/character.php?id=1519 who I believe had a writer and an artist http://entervoid.com/view.php?id=1924&side=1&iid=15 but did not do it officially. I think it would be best for people to do it through official means so both people get credit plus your opponent will be aware they're going against 2 people.

Does the character submitted have to be designed solely for Void?
I have a character of mine from a comic I do, and I would like to use her, but I can't find much of anything about that. She's an original character, just for a different world.

You can use whoever you want :). People have brought in characters from other things they've made before and have used them here.

You don't have to have your comics take place in 'Void City' that is not mandatory....it is just a commonly held construct.

We do insist on original characters and original content......no posting the same comic here and on WFA or whatever.......but it isn't neccesary to retool an exisiting character of your own creation just to fit what you suppose is our mold......you comics are your comics....they may contain whatever original characters in what ever context or setting you choose.

However, some artists are very possessive of their exisiting characters and get itchy and sore when other artists screw around with them.....and there is no creme or ointment for that....so if you think you might not like anyone else getting their grubby fingers all over your character....you might wanna choose to create a new one just for comics on this site

Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!

Beyond battles are comics that you can do solo! While they are graded they don't effect your rank really and are a chance to focus on doing what you want to do. You do have to have a character in in order to do them and can set a deadline up if you like. I am infamous for doing billions of them, here is one I did last year

http://entervoid.com/comic.php?id=2946

Some people use them as an opportunity to finish up previous battles as well. There are also collab beyond battles where you can team up with another person and do one comic as 1 unit.

This can explain everything way better than I can, but I took this from the FAQ on the main site:

Quote
Beyond Battle:
This type of Comic is VOID's way of letting artists progress their character's stories outside of challenge-based Comics. An artist may submit a Beyond Battle at any time, and it will be displayed for viewing along with the rest of the Comics currently available for Voting. Points will be tallied and go towards your overall Class and Rank, however no wins or losses are involved, as there are no opponents. Your Comic may feature anything you like, but keep in mind that it is always a good thing to be respectful to other artists and their creations, meaning, if you plan to use another artist's character in a large plot, it may be wise to consult them first, to avoid any conflicts later on down the line. Also keep in mind, as this is solely your work, the VOID Council will have to approve it first before it goes up for voting. The purpose of Beyond Battles is quality, not quantity, so please submit only finished works that truly reflect your current skill and ability.

I'd suggest a read up on the FAQ, even if some parts I -think- are dated. Its been a while since I looked at it, but it gives you a general idea anyway.

http://entervoid.com/FAQ.php (http://entervoid.com/FAQ.php)

Edit: Whoa, ninja'd. Which thats rare to happen because it usually alerts me when someone has posted before me haha.

It used to be possible to see a list of someone's comics and what the average stats for each was, handy for picking out the exceptionally well-drawn or creative comics. Is there still a way to do that or was it discarded in the update to the site?

I think Cherubas is looking for the stat details - individual percentages for each of CRE, ENT, and QUA.  And a page displaying that hasn't been re-built for the new site yet.

There should have been an email with an explanation ... double check your spam folder just in case?  If it's definitely not there then let us know, it may be some bug in the site... it happens! Sorry about that!

If you would like an immediate explanation, I can send you a private message about what needed to be worked on if that helps. :)

Hey everybody! I was just wondering if you have two characters can they have separate design sheets? Or do they have to be on the same one?

Its the question of how do you mean "two"
Is it one Character how is actually a team?
Or do you have allready one character and want to do another one?

If it is the first one they should be both on one design sheet.
But if it is the second it will get his own design sheet.

If you have two characters that are in a team, you can only have them on one sheet. It's okay if the sheet gets large, just be reasonable. I have a lot of stuff on Angie's, but it's not a 1MB file http://entervoid.com/images/fighters/927/angiedesignsheetnewcolors.jpg

I want to do a Collaborative comic.  How can I set up that?
If you want to work on a comic for the site with another artist, any in capacity (e.g. writer & artist, two artists, artist & colorist, etc.), only Toast can set that up for you.  Just send him a quick message (http://entervoid.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1) with all the details of characters and artists involved, start date, length of drawing time, and match type.

He wants desperately to put the power in your hands, but hasn't figured it out quite yet.

Cancelling a Match
If it is necessary to cancel a match before the deadline, each combatant must agree to the cancellation and contact a Battle Manager or Administrator. If not all the participants agree, the match will continue and not be cancelled.  If you wish to cancel a match, please have your fellow participants contact a member of the staff, as we will not seek them out for consent.

Tournament matches and other special events cannot be cancelled once they've entered the Drawing period has begun.  Additionally, no match can be cancelled within 24 hours of the deadline.

We don’t like cancelling matches but we prefer them to defaulting (which nobody likes) and understand that sometimes prior commitments and unpleasant surprises do arise.

Please be aware: repeated cancellations may result in action being taken by the Council.
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!
Post by: Angie on Jul 08, 2012, 09:40 AM
Remember it is your responsibility to get your opponent to contact us with their consent if you need a comic cancelled. The battle managers won't track people down for you.

TOASTY EDIT: This has been added to the original post.

I cant seem to find it in the new site, as it made the transition or is this no longer a thing?

Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!

There's not.  I reassigned Galvosaur to Dawg since he created the characters, and would have to set up any matches using an NPC manually.

NPCs were briefly a thing a few years back, but died on the vine so I never did much more with them.

If your character has some sort of personal transport like I space shuttle/ fighter jet/ chopper kind of thing, that has to be included on the design sheet as well correct?
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!
Post by: Angie on Jul 22, 2012, 04:16 PM
Unless the vehicle is physically part of the character then no. You can include it if you like, especially if your character is going to be in the vehicle a significant amount of time. But otherwise it's not required.

Hey guys,

Uhhh I had a character in the VOID invitational and because I'm a can't-time-manage butt pants I had to drop out because of RL things :/
BUT NOW
I decided to make an intro comic and such and move on from my failed invitational endeavours, buuuuuut it forever says my character has no intro story, though I have the pages uploaded... do I have to submit her anew?
Actually a clean slate would probably be nice but I don't know what the go is on that >3>
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!
Post by: Angie on Sep 22, 2012, 08:11 PM
If it's an intro for the character that's already in, just submit it as a beyond battle.
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!
Post by: EyeAmPhibian on Oct 02, 2012, 05:14 AM
Ok guys. I really want to be a bit more open in my comics, I was wondering if I could submit a PLACE rather than a CHARACTER as as design sheet.

Just so I could focus on world building and lots of characters rather than a specific character. I feel it is too limiting.

My idea is a disused theme park which has a potentially large cast of characters that I may introduce through more comics, also of course, when battling, other people's characters may get involved.

For the sake of clarity, if it were possible, could I just add segments onto my design sheet after comics to represent certain characters?

I can get much more specific about details if you like but I don't want to shower you with the ideas if this is not a possibility anyway.
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!
Post by: E.W. Schneider on Oct 02, 2012, 05:37 AM
I don't think there's anything technically wrong with that, but your design sheet would have to be pretty detailed. I think you would also need to present maybe a cast of characters to work with it.
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!
Post by: Wei Ingnan on Oct 02, 2012, 05:00 PM
I'm gonna have to go with 'cast of characters' as opposed to trying to submit a location as a character ......you are getting unnecessarily hung up.......the Approval Committed is not going to judge your entry on the merits of your character...rather the merits of your entry itself....

Just focus on preparing the best example of your current ability and once you have been approved you can develop and expand any cast or setting within your reservation comics as you see fit

OK.......I didn't originally realize you had already gotten a character in.....with your current status you can post Beyond Battles and have Artists Battles about pretty much anything yer little heart desires without having to worry about design sheets....so go ahead and develop settings and character and whatever..... go make comics
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Your's Here!
Post by: Kuro on Oct 02, 2012, 06:18 PM
Yeah I say go the artist battle/beyond battle route. If you've already got a cast of characters in this place, why shoehorn in someone else's? Just tell a good story. If the setting's important, focus on that.

Oh wow. That sounds perfect. Thanks for the replies everybody. I basically didn't understand the exact rules and regulations of beyond battles and artist battles which is probably why I didn't think of them. I will be sure to read up on the rules of it.
I was just wondering, if I am posting these comics up on Void, the reason being because I feel it is such a great community and really love the critique and inspiration of the people on the site, would I still be allowed to publish the comics outside of Void as long as I am not using people's characters?
I just really want to experiment with doing a regular webcomic and self publishing through print...

Personally, that's what I like to think of Beyond Battles for--practice--like when we had our First Issue Challenge :) As long as you're not using anyone else's characters, I'm pretty sure you'd be allowed to get those BB comics printed.

Ah well, I haven't actually voted on mine (because I didn't know what I would give myself), but the little voting boxes are under my comic when I view it. Perhaps its a case of if I actually tried to use them they just wouldn't work?

I've come across this too, and as a test, shit voted myself when battling someone else. It doesn't affect the scoring on either side as far as I've tested, so I assume it doesn't work at all.

But I can imagine it would cause confusion to some, so yeah it's best to get that sorted out.

Yeah I've noticed/brought this up before I think once. For some reason when a character is new and the intro story goes up it doesn't realize that you are the owner of the character on the comic page. Everything after that though works, its just on the intro comics.

I have a few questions! Mostly because I can't figure out how to use the new site because it's been AAAGES since I was here uAu;

>What size, absolutely, do the design sheets have to be? I found "around 800 pixels squared," but is there an absolute size they cannot be? Is it bad if some are a little over that? I assume width-wise it's for the forums so as not to stretch, but is it bad if it's a little taller? I need to practice drawing small again u___u or just shrinking down my stuff once it's done.

>One of the admins mentioned that you can do anything for a comic. Is there a place I can find specific guidelines on handling NSFW or 18+ stuff? I don't necessarily want to just come in here and draw porn, but the character I would like to submit has a habit of being naked often and I didn't want to get in trouble/wanted to know if there was a censorship or age-protection thing going on here. As an artist I sometimes forget nudity can be offensive so I just want to make sure in case I do something wrong LOL

>Once more, what are the dimensions of the comics? It's 800 wide by... is it 1000 tall for max? xAx;

>I know ideally you're supposed to post finished stuff in the Incubator, but I was wondering if I could post a "polished" and colored rough just to get the idea/feedback before I lineart and finish it up? It's alright to do that, yes? Considering my lineart takes me hours and I don't want to lose some time having to go back and fix stuff [especially if it's major] if I have to. Time conservation, really! I hope that's ok.

>ONE LAST THING- phew! I'm currently going to college, but I'm on my winter break as of now. I know production of comics will come to an extreme slow when school starts back up, so I was wondering... We don't have to post a certain amount of drawings a day/week or whatever, right? It's just when we get challenged? Because I would absolutely LOVE to join and practice my deadline AND comic skills (I'm bad at managing personal deadlines so VOID could really help me out) but I can't promise I can be 100% active when not in a battle. ;____;

Thanks! I look forward to submitting a character! [Edited because I forgot to finish a sentence <___<]
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Yours Here!
Post by: Angie on Jan 07, 2013, 10:02 AM
There is no set guidelines for page sizes, just you ideally want your pages to be below 500KB. Pretty much as long as it's not stupidly massive as if you didn't resize you're fine.

There is no specific guidelines for adult material on the site. We have had straight up porn and rape and gore on the site. I think as long as it's not going to get you arrested if you draw it, you can draw it on the site. (so yeah, no child porn)

You don't have to do a specific amount of comics. You just have to do a comic once every 6 months to avoid getting marked inactive. Nothing bad happens if you're marked inactive, I believe you just need to battle again and you're fine.

The Winning and Losing poses were for a feature to be implemented that never was.  So it's an artifact of a bygone era.  But enough people have it so it sticks.  It's not essential and basically if you want to do it for fun, you can.

What is the site's policy on submitting characters we've used in previous things? Like, we used then in a previous comic, or they were our player character in an online game.

Also, do design sheets and intro stories have to be drawn by me, or can they be collaborations too?

that's totally fine as long as they don't violate copyright laws.

Well, how do you plan on doing comics on void? If you want to write AND draw, then I would say your intro and design sheet should definitely be 100% drawn by you.

We do have artist and writer teams (see Starker http://entervoid.com/index.php?action=character;id=2020 who is a character that belongs to EvilEye, the writer, but is drawn by Roflqu.)

We definitely encourage collaboration, it just has to be clear to your opponent WHO they are up against. Do you have a friend you were planning on collaborating with? What's your plan?

As long as it's not a fan character or infringing on anyone else's copyright, you can use any character you have already made. So a character from a comic you made would be fine, but not a character made for an online game. For instance, my character Angela Rudell I used for years for my own stuff prior to Void. But I couldn't submit my WoW character as they belong to Blizzard.

Design sheets and intros must be drawn by you unless you get permission from Toast to have a collab character.

What if I don't make references to the game at all? Or 'write around trademarks?'

For instance, if I change this character's story, could I theoretically submit him?

What I was thinking was a series of team-ups/collaborations with different artists and their characters, but those would probably be classified as "beyond battles".

I did like those tag team battles you guys had earlier this year. Maybe could do some of those.

No fan characters at all are allowed, just due to copyrights.

now hold on a second.  Adapting your online character to void is fine as long as you remove all references to the original game.  I noticed that it was a Champions online RP character and as long as the back story has nothing to do with Millennium City/Dr. Destroyer/anything else in the game, you can use the design.

Hell, my own character Bullet Princess had her humble beginnings as a Champions Online character.

And how much customization does Champions Online provide? If it's just a matter of you threw an outfit together that the game and the outfits exist in reality, that would be fine. However, if the designs are unique to the game like in something like World of Warcraft

it gets a little messier. The armor and weapon designs are clearly Blizzard's so I couldn't just straight up use those. Even though I got to choose what my character's hair looked like and what clothes she's wearing, obviously the armor itself is unique to the game.

If you were allowed to design everything yourself I could see it being okay. But if there is anything pre-done in there, you would need to heavily modify it.

Champions Online offers a HUGE amount of customisation. It's probably the game's best feature.

For instance, here's another character I made in it.

(I also made two robots, an alien and a Batman-type vigilante)

In fact, you should see what this guy does with the creator. (http://co-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=223561)

Man, if they made the character creator a separate program, it would be the perfect tool for character design. Make a model in 3D, then you can turn it around and get references from different angles!

Yeah.....I'm gonna have to go with....WTF!?.....WHY?
enterVOID is all about original material...so you need to take the opportunity to stretch your creative muscles...cuz there is a big difference between using 3rd party material because of your own shortcomings/inexperience and being lazy when designing a disposable character

We are as a community all about D.I.Y. and getting better by doing...so we don't approve of shortcuts....and we don't accept people trying to weasel around inadequacy

Somehow i think my words were twisted in a way i did not intend.

I believe using the character creator is fine for getting inspiration for characters.  After all, you still have to draw the damn thing yourself.  That pokerface character had a good costume as far as using the in-game engine goes, but drawing it out yourself there's more to what you can add than what the creation system allows.

Whether the idea came from a generator, your own head, a coffee stain, it's still your idea.  And as long as there's no copyright violations it's fine.

TLDR

YOU STILL HAVE TO DRAW THE DAMN THING

Of course the in-game character is just a starting point. I already see a few ways he can be improved...

On the topic of copyrights..

Now, drawing a big-eared mouse with red trunks and call him "Mark Mouse" is gonna land you in a world of trouble.. but what are the rules about copyrighted characters /material being displayed in your comics? for example if a character wears a Mickey Mouse t-shirt or has a Mickey Mouse poster on his/her wall? What if your character gets knocked out and hallucinates meeting Superman? What if, for a one-shot comic, your character eats a lot of mushrooms and dresses up as Batman?

I guess what I am trying to say is: I understand that characters should be original but up to what point can we include "copyrighted material" in our comics? Or is it just off the table, period?

I remember at the time when some of us were creating the EnterVOID anthology, we were specifically told to NOT put in any copyrighted material of any sort into our comics.

I think its due to the fact that the anthology was a profit-based product, and because of this you avoid copyrighted material at any costs to keep you out of trouble from the fat cats.

However, personally, because our webcomics here on enterVOID are not on the commercial market, they're free for anybody and everybody to read, I'd find it more acceptable to have copyrighted material in your work because you're not making any money from it - heck, it's essentially free advertising for them.

It's not off the table. Parodies are fine and legal. I would encourage everyone to try to avoid copyrighted material though. Most people swap out a brand name and create things like "Void bucks coffee". I would use copyrighted material sparingly and for parody purposes only.

So essentially... Mickey Mouse poster? Sure, whatever. Comic about Batman? Ehhh... maybe not.

Yes, you the character will become "double dead". Next year, you will have the opportunity to become "triple dead". Only when you have achieved the rank of "quadruple dead" THEN you may then piece the heavens. Piercing the heavens before you have reached quadruple dead is strictly against the rules.

Hello! I have a question concerning characters--

I plan on creating a character team of 2 (possibly 4, depending on the answer to this query), and each character has a friend that I plan on cameo'ing often (though, for the purpose of comics and battles, they will not be the focus of storyline/comic). Because the 4 are closely related, I plan on putting the tag-alongs on the ref sheet and including some extra information in the biographies, however... Well, the 2 extra characters belong to some friends of mine-- I do have permission from both to use them on EnterVOID, however all drawing/writing/scripting on here will be done by me. I guess what I mean to ask is,  with permission is it alright for me to include these characters on EnterVOID despite the fact that my friends do not plan on participating themselves on the site artwise, how much detail about them would be acceptable for me to put onto the team profile, or should I simply treat it like a 4-man team?

Team characters are perfectly fine. As for permission for your friends' characters, as long as you have permission from your friends to use them, you'll be fine.

Ooh can I ask some things?

- Do you actually have to kill your opponent's character in the comic in a death match?

- Can scars in a scar match be a psychological scar? As in, can you change your opponent character's personality? Or do all changes have to be physical?

re: Death Matches
The only condition is that your opponent must die in the comic. You're free to be creative in how it happens, even if it means your fighter doesn't actually kill the opponent.

re: Scar Matches
Copied from the User Guide: "These matches give you the opportunity to change your opponent's design. The loser of a scar match must receive a "scar" from their opponent, as described in the winning comic. The winner of scar matches escape unaltered. The only rule is that your opponent must be depicted receiving a scar in your comic."

A psychological scar on its own merits no design alterations, so I don't think that would fly. You could inflict a physical scar with the implications of psychological damage, but there is no rule that strictly enforces artists to change how a character is written.

You got a point there.

Scars are tricky, since your opponent can write around bigger things. The most common fix for things like missing limbs are mechanical prosthetics. Very few characters on the site haven't replaced their missing limbs. For THE BEAST, I gave him regenerating tentacles to replace his missing arm and worked his broken back into a character development arc that gave him back his rational mind and turned him into a cyborg.

So yeah, scars are a fantastic way for you to have some fun and to possible push your opponent to go in a new direction with the character they had never thought of.
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Yours Here!
Post by: Angie on Jan 03, 2014, 08:12 AM
No matter what, you need to give them some sort of physical scar to go with the rest so there is something to update on the design sheet. For example Angie received a psychological scar in Suit vs Angela Rudell but we still made sure she received a physical one to go with it.

Please don't comment on battles that you want a comic canceled! I don't always read battle comments until the battle is due to go up or I've been informed there's drama that needs to be cleaned up, so there is always the risk I won't see it and you'll get a double default. In order to cancel a battle please have both parties contact either me, Wei, Bobo, or Red (you both must contact the same person obviously) to let us know you want to cancel.

do they call things like the master of disaster tournament by that name?
If I ask is it okay to have other people's characters show up in the background of scenes instead of generic void denizens?
Is it okay to use different styles for different characters?

Howdy!

I haven't been active here in years. My old handle was Kaelin. I made a new account because I go by a new handle now.

My question! It's been five years. A lot has changed. The characters I once used on void have changed tremendously and I don't want the old iterations of them confused with the new. Is it possible to resubmit them on the new account and leave the old iterations retired? I understand if it's not preferable, I mean I can see how it would muddy things up and I'll be happy to accept no for an answer, but it doesn't hurt to ask!

it isn't unheard of for this to happen...more common than you might think and normally done without any real hooharrah...characters change...most artists simply change bio and design sheet and move forward....I think Rtv! for example re-designed his main character at least 4 or 5 times over the years as I recall...not even including scars and such

...I would suggest that if a division or reboot point is important to you.... that you simply retain the same account....change the design sheet and bio for each character and add a small notation in the bio re: all comics before such and such a date are representive of older versions of the character....or what have you

past your own personal preferences a division isn't even neccesary...people will see your design sheet and go from that ....anyone reading the old comics should be at least swift enough to read dates and make the proper asumption even without some notation in your bio....and any comments proving somthing contrary will allow us to identify and tag the more stupid members and then chemically sterilize them before placing them back into the wild.....most humane thing to do really

your proposed course of action just causes too much potential for confusion and I for one cannot get behind the idea of people just starting up new accounts for new versions of the same character....not a precedent I would want set

Hello, I tried looking around the User Guides and FAQs and these were some questions I couldn't find answers to:

-About the profile avatars: I haven't gotten any error messages, but it still is not showing up from what I can tell. What are the dimensions, and where should I upload the images to link to them in the Edit Profile settings? Also what is the "gallery" for avatars?

-Is there any way we could specify sorts of explicit material we really don't want to happen? Like for example, I am fine with gore, scars, violence, etc but I saw it mentioned and I am uh, very averse to the idea that people can rape my characters. Should that be part of my bio, should I say that when I discuss with potential matches, or do I have to tough it?

-What is the rule on characters who are initially ghosts, if their full abilities are outlined on a character sheet? Like obviously in a death match their spirit is gone, but is that too complicated? Should they just be alive?

Thank you!
Title: Re: Questions About Void? Post Yours Here!
Post by: Animeshen on Feb 12, 2015, 08:27 PM
-about the first one someone with more technical knowledge should probably answer ^^;

-that would I think be on a more personal level you discuss with your opponent. Like most characters, you'll know before you fight them if they are the "rapey" sort so you can just avoid fighting them, but if, say, you ended up somehow faced off with a molester character (of which by the way there are few but not none) in a tournament, you would probably just PM that artist and be like "look I kinda really don't want X to happen" and most artists will be respectful of that. Basically if you wanna fight someone but think theres a possibility of that, you can just contact the other artist, you dont need to put it in your bio.

-I'm pretty sure there have been other ghost characters, Hell most people thought my character was a ghost for her couple fights (my character STILL thinks shes is) so thats no problem. Obviously that means getting a little creative with scar and death matches but no, a ghost isnt too complicated =D

I believe the gallery of avatars is just recent ones you've used, so you can switch faster if you go back and forth. I think. I haven't really used that myself. If I recall it's supposed to be 100 by 100, 72dpi and either a jpg or a gif. Can't say for sure though, been so long since I changed mine.

Void is purposefully listed as a mature audiences only site because that kind of stuff might happen in comics, however most voiders are perfectly fine with agreeing to not draw a certain subject matter if you write it in your characters bio or mention is specifically. In fact, most voiders typically ask before doing something like that or its in their characters bio that they might do that. Pretty much you just have to talk to them and if you aren't comfortable, then don't battle them. though that can be hard in tournament settings. It is important to mention though that outside of the ramifications of a scar or death match, void has no established canon. So even IF something were to happen to your character in an opponents comic (or your own) and you don't want to acknowledge it. It's totally acceptable.

Ghosts are fine. The scar and death match rules are subjective for characters. A robot gets scarred and for whatever reason doesn't get himself repaired. a shapechanger gets an eye blown out, and for some reason he can't shapeshift that eye anymore. Whatever reasoning you come up with It's on that characters artist to make the scar visible somehow on their design sheet after losing a scar match. (that's why so many people on void ended up with robot arms/legs back in the past).

shrink down your intended image and try loading it again from an image host or other web location....  between 50 pixels by 50 pixels to 100x100 pixels is a good place to start

you are always able to discuss any and all terms with an artist before agreeing to a match and hopefully they will agree and stick terms(if you both agree you can even ask Staff/Council to enact/enforce special requirements to those )....scars and death however are only permanent in special matches...and if you are nervous about how a character is represented by another artist than you should be careful about who you have a match with(while coming to terms with the fact that is a BIG part of what we do around here)...because technically it is totally up to the individual artist what takes place in their comics with or without the consent of the artist or the fictional character...although I am not exactly certain who is talking about rape comics or how frequently that has actually happened....character context for one or two well established characters..... one or two idiots trying to push buttons and get attention along the way with individual comics maybe....nobody really to worry about anymore...... most of us aren't heartless assholes anyways

...and as far as death matches go...it doesn't matter what a bio or character sheet says or what the character design is; if an artist loses a death match their character is dead....if an artist loses a scar match their character has the scar as represented in the winners comic.....don't like it?..no problem.....don't enter special matches

EDIT: and I need to learn how to type faster
The scar and death match rules are subjective for characters.

...I think you mean the rules are NOT subjective for individual characters

Put the information about what is off-limits with your character right in their bio.

With the exception of one character that is literally a rapist, I can't imagine this current crowd getting THAT dark and creepy, but as long as you're open with communication about that, your wishes will most likely be respected. We're pretty nice B)

Ah, my bad wei. Might have used the word wrong. I mean that what reason a character has a scar in their storyline (or lack there of) is up to the artist who lost the match to depict.  But yes, the rule of if they have a scar or not does not depend on the character. If your character is given a scar, they HAVE to be drawn with it.

As an example, It doesn't matter if a character is a ghost, a robot, a shapeshifting being of cosmic power, or a brick. If someone gives your character a burn mark on the side of their eye in a winning scar match, then that character MUST have a burn mark on the side of their eye in your new design sheet and future battles. The ghost might be spiritually damaged, the robot might not be able to find a mechanic, the cosmic being might just think it looks awesome, and the brick might not care. But those are story reasons for it still being there, you can write whatever reasoning you want. As long as it's still there.

Sorry if I was confusing at all.

Sooo I haven't done this in a while... But can we still submit our own thumbs for battle? Who do we bother with them? Wei/Red since they post battles atm?

Not sure I will but in case I do ;)

Yeah, you have to email them to a battle manager. Actually we just made staff@entervoid.com so you could use that so we all see it.

Quick q about BB's/awards. Does doing a BB break your winning streak now? Is that something that changed in the last year?

It might, even though it shouldn't.  I'll be looking into this and more regarding Awards soon.

ok, so I noticed this morning that my comic battle vs pomo was tied at 50/50 with 14 votes, and checking it recently, the percentages have changed, but the votes have stayed the same.  Now, I'm assuming that this was removed as a result of suspected cheating, but I was wondering if there's an appeal system for something like that. For whatever it's worth I haven't asked anyone to vote in my favour but I know it's totally possible for a friend on the site to vote in a biased fashion - basically if someone legitimately enjoyed my comic enough to give me that score, I'd obviously appreciate their vote.

It's quite possible that they gave pocketmouse an unfairly lesser score. Example being you got all 10's and she got all 1's or something like that. If that's the case, it'd be taken down for being done in bad faith.

There is no appeal system. Generally when we find something fishy we issue a warning which removes the offending votes. In instances of something really amiss like a bunch of shared IPs voting, it's discussed among the council.

Hello, Aingie. I submitted a charaer to Void some five years back, never battled with said character, and have since lost touch with it. I was curious as to weather or not I could substitute my old entrant and intro comic for a new one, or just submit a new character all together. Thank you for your help! 8)

There's nothing stopping you from redesigning the character! However, if it's going to be essentially a brand new character you may as well just submit a new one. That way we can see how your comic game has improved since your old submission!

Ah yes. I wouldn't want to completely erase the old character. You'll be seeing me in the incubator very soon! Thanks again.

4 questions

1. Can I use traditional art? Or does it have to be digital?

2. Can my character be my Fursona? Or do I have to create one specifically for void?

3. Are Original Species based characters allowed?

4. Can I use my fandom oc? (Undertale, Homestuck, Pokemon, etc.)

5. What happens when a character dies? Can they be revived?

1. You can use traditional, digital, and anything in between. As long as it's artwork it's A-ok.
2. You could use a fursona as long as it's your own original design. The characters you want to put on the site are completely up to you.
3. It's not just allowed but encouraged. There's a myriad of other original species on the site, if you want to make one then go for it.
4. Fandom characters aren't really allowed. We want people to create their own content.
5. When a character dies, they cannot be used unless it's a beyond battle (Non competitive comic) or when it's October, in which they can be active during the whole month. They can be resurrected in certain tournaments should you want to revive one. Considering though that characters only die in certain types of battles, I wouldn't be too concerned over it.

I hope this answered your questions, feel free to ask more if there's anything else you're curious about.

Thank you!

Elaborating on this:

entervoid is a community both collaborative and competitive, when you make your character you give your opponent allowance to interpret your character how they feel for their comic. Inevitably, your character may be placed in a situation you may consider "out of character", or that you otherwise find objection with. Understand that a) there is no offense intended from the opponent, and b) there is no official canon, so you can choose to ignore the story decisions of comics at your will (except of course for the results of Scar and Death matches). Knowing this, make sure you are not so personally attached to the character you submit that it would bother you to see them in situations outside your control

If I am allowed, I would like expanding a bit on "you give your opponent allowance to interpret your character how they feel for their comic. Inevitably, your character may be placed in a situation you may consider "out of character""
Um, as you read on the front page, VOID is known to be directed at Mature audiences, therefore it is possible to have your character installed in a comic, and story, that may revolve around Romance, Smut, Gore, Death, and so on. Pretty much depends on the type of character, and the artist.
However, most of us are pretty open minded, and do not mind being told NOT to do certain stuff with a character.

For example, (and apologies for using myself as an instance) I have a Lust Demon/Incubus character. That character is MEANT to portray Sexual Scenes, so when fighting me with that character, it is most likely I will draw something which will include some kind of Intimation between the fighters/characters.
However, you can always PM, or make me know through any other way that you would prefer that I avoid drawing pornographic content of your persona (and/or fursona, etc)

Um.

I think that's it.

P.D.
Oh! There is also a thing where two or more artist can collaborate. VOID is not always about fighting each other, you can always pick a more cooperative route and team up with a partner or group to just tell stories and have fun. Drive a plot for several characters, or just crackshipping, or follow a certain rule, etcetera.
Sky isn't the limit in here, you can come up with whatever you want.

You make your own decisions and adventures in VOID, after all.

With that said, welcome aboard. We hope to see your illustrations and Comics soon. ^^
