Title: Muscle May
Post by: otakutaylor on May 01, 2018, 09:43 PM
(https://orig00.deviantart.net/e890/f/2018/121/e/1/muscle_may_cover_by_otakutaylor-dcaeoc2.jpg)

Muscle May is a draw every day challenge, with a new muscle to draw every day!

Doesn't matter if you do a single sketch or a whole page of practice, whatever you want to do to work your drawing muscles, drop it in the thread.
I'll be drawing along with you, and trying to post some useful references to help each day.
You don't have to draw each day either, jump in when you want and out if you're done.
Plus, on each muscles day, at your request, you can ask for me to critique what you've drawn. I'll try to give what tips I can and/or redline your anatomy if you'd like!

Some examples of the muscle practice I've done before: https://sta.sh/21la461xb80f?edit=1

My recommendation is to spend around a half hour, and draw your selected reference 3-5 times, rather than spend all that time on one drawing. It's easy to get lost focusing on making your practice sketches look good, when we're focusing on form and accuracy. and remember, muscles are WEIRD. Often what's correct looks wrong, and what looks incorrect looks cooler. Check out contortion videos if you wanna be grossed out on the limits the human body can by pressed.

Oh, and of course, I'm not claiming to be a master of muscles here, It's just my... personal focus. ^_^ So if I make a mistake in drawing, representing, or critiquing a muscle please let me know! I'm here to get better just the same~
(yes, late start due to work today delaying my getting this all setup. so day 2 will count for both. I'll post the second as soon as I finish with the first.)

Alright let's get started...
Day 1: Sternocleidomastoid
https://orig00.deviantart.net/79ed/f/2018/122/e/6/mm1_by_mrpr1993-dcahkro.png (https://orig00.deviantart.net/79ed/f/2018/122/e/6/mm1_by_mrpr1993-dcahkro.png)

Day 2: Triceps Brachii aka Triceps
(https://orig00.deviantart.net/b890/f/2018/122/5/3/mm2_by_mrpr1993-dcahks1.png)
Hm... the second one turned out kinda.... tricky to me? ^^; Since I read your info, I might ask for a critique about this bit.

Day 2: Triceps
(https://orig00.deviantart.net/05b9/f/2018/122/3/6/day_2_triceps_by_otakutaylor-dcahkcc.jpg)

Muscle 3: External Oblique  aka the bottom zippers and the love handle muscle.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdominal_external_oblique_muscle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUHjijIsvgg  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWf7_MUiJCQ  -  Proko Videos

Obliques are quite a pickle sometimes, and one of the most frequently misdrawn for effect after the abs themselves. Plus they often blend together when not flexed.

https://gyazo.com/a8a7c9f95c9399d4226ed9e60b57d862   fade in/out to maybe help? dunno if that's useful.

Triceps are an oddity with their horseshoe shape on the arm but an important part to remember is that their job is to straighten the arm by pulling the tendon in the middle of the horseshoe up, to pull on the connection at the elbow. It's rare they're flexed to visibility on most people outside of intentionally showing them off, but when they're being used they flex and bunch up more at the top of the arm where their mass is, leaving that indentation of the tendon visible along with the more spindly sections that trace down the side to help keep the arm from rotating at the same time. The biggest catch in your attempt is it seems like you bulked out the lower section instead on your attempt. It's also important to remember that on all but the most wrecklessly buff characters, like say yours and mine, if the tricep is flexed, the bicep is not. You'll rarely if ever see any significant bump on the bicep side. Props for including the brachioradialis and extensor carpi radialis longus, *I did have to look up the names* also called the ridge muscles, to show the twist and thickness of the forearm.

Muscle 4: Tibialis Anterior aka your shins best buddy  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibialis_anterior_muscle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SpcOewmR5s   really cool painting on the leg example of it's placement.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3FsiatmBDU This dude has huge shins!
This one is new to me, by name and focus. So we're all going in a bit blind on this one! But it's useful for learning how the shin bone "sticks out" of the muscles as it's the only real protection your shin has. Since we don't need to bend our foot "up" very often, we've got no other muscle protecting the shins. Which is why it hurts SO GOD DAMN MUCH when you hit it.

Muscle 5: Trapezius  aka Traps or the muscle that eats your neck.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trapezius_muscle
Getting into one of the "fun" muscles, the trapezius is the muscle that dominates the upper back and curls around the top to give football players those MASSIVE shoulders that prevent them from moving their heads.

Hairball and now Drumstick know that when Tsumi's too exhausted after a workout to get up is the perfect time to demand pets.
Drumstick is just a little too excited sometimes. hehe.

Muscle 8: Brachioradialis and Extensor carpi radialis longus  aka the ridge muscle or "that bulgy thing connecting the forearm and upperarm that isn't the elbow."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brachioradialis
These two dictate a lot of how the arm twists in drawings and adds a lot of depth when flexed. and while technically separate are usually conveyed together.

Muscle 11:  Extensor Digitorum Longus and Extensor Hallicus Longus  aka upper toe muscles  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensor_hallucis_longus_muscle
Desi made it hard on us today. hehe. I just picked two, but there's a lot of little muscles in the toes, on top and bottom of your feet to flex and move your lil piggies.
We're focusing on the ones that start up in the leg, the tendons stretching across the top of the foot, and stretch the toes out when flexed. Because they're on occasion seen on very veiny feets near the "toe knuckles"

Finally we're on to the muscles that make Tsumi who she is. Those gigantically broad shoulders!
I've learned and re-learned and re-learned these muscles over and over, realizing each time there's more to the shapes than I had thought before.

Muscle 16: Tongue  aka not technically the strongest muscle in your body, but we like to think it is. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tongue
ok, so no, we're not going in depth on the tongue, it's STUPIDLY complicated to draw all the muscles inside and around the jaw. Just doing some practice on one of the most flexible muscles in the body to remember that there's a lot of little muscles in the face that while they might not get focused or really buff are useful for knowing how the face emotes.
(careful googling reference for this one, there's a lot of gross examples)

Muscle 25: Brachialis aka Biceps best friend  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brachialis_muscle
Arms two days in a row, because the Brachialis is an important part of what makes biceps peak.
and yes, your arms have Biceps Brachii, Brachialis, and Brachioradialis all next to each other. Because that's how you name stuff...
Just be lucky we aren't going any deeper into the Biceps, they have a long and short head, and the long head is the shorter one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mO70v8F9VeQ - this dude does a great video series on workouts, but he draws the muscles on himself to show how they work. It's great for seeing where they're supposed to be and where they move when you flex.

Muscle 27: Tensor fasciae latae aka I had no idea there was a muscle there until gluteus maximus day. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tensor_fasciae_latae_muscle
This little guy attaches to a important tendon that runs from your hip and the top of your butt muscle down the outside of your thighs to your knee.
very rarely significantly seen, it is the farthest "out" muscle for your hips/butt area and important for side kicks and learning how the torso and legs connect.

Muscle 31: The Heart
Of course I had to be cheesy on the last day.
I spent this whole month drawing what I love, learning about it, and somehow stuck with it every single day.
This has been an amazing experience for me, and I hope somehow it helps others as much as it's helped me.
Thank you to everyone who supported me through these exercises. (mostly on discord, which is why it's not in this thread btw)
So for tomorrow, just draw what your heart tells you.
(or an actual heart, if you really want too...)

This has been an incredible help to me, and something I certainly should have done earlier.
Oh, and If you ever need muscle/anatomy practice you can still drop it in the thread here! Though I'd recommend poking me on discord too, just in case. ^_^

Hopefully I'll see you all in this thread next year!

We're back again! Muscle May 2!
Every day a different muscle, some will be repeats from last year, others will be new. All depends on what needs a little more flexing.
Same as last time, jump in wherever you need, and I'll do my best to help you figure out how to flex those art muscles.
Don't forget to check last years entries for more examples and references.

Nice work Arts~ and I look forward to seeing your stuff Inky!
Also, in a bit of a "why didn't I realize this earlier?" moment, I finally found out why that gap in the sternum and clavicle is rarely pronounced. There's a muscle layer covering the lot of it. Might make a whole day out of it later, but introducing the Platysma: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platysma_muscle
(https://thumbor.kenhub.com/2yBmYj_V-UYlxqZ09JI-ro-rEMg=/260x260/filters:fill(FFFFFF,true):format(jpeg)/images/video/en/attachments-innervation-functions-of-platysma/JKf93yGpgwmTqgZY24zjg_Platysma.png)

This thin layer from the chin to the clavicle bone near completely covers the neck muscles. While it's job is mostly just moving the jaw, it and the skin on top of it smooth out a lot of the bumps and lines in the average neck. Obviously, bodybuilders who workout those muscles have definition that shows through this, but it's presence helps explain why that gap between the sternum and clavicle connection of the Sternocleidomastoid is usually only visible in the most extreme flexes, and instead looks more like a smoothed bump.

I tried to show how that functioned on your piece Arts, hope you don't mind the Redline.

The Sternocleidomastoid is a muscle I've learned and re-learned each time I tried to it seems. But the Platysma covering it is often not shown in diagrams when you're learning these muscles. Since it'd cover them all up and be hard to see, it makes sense, but it shows I've got more to learn here too.

Time to start on the Triceps~
