Might as well give this a shot.  I wonder if Jii's available... if he'll want to be my mentor, that is.

...is.... is that a yes or a no lol

It's a cute bear! Real talk tho I'm busy and Idk what twists and turns life may take me on but FOR YOU SHEN, ANYTHING. Just hmu on skype whenever ur free and we'll figure something out : )
_

Also Just wanted to put this out, especially for people like Evi and Shen who maybe wanted to Mentor but this thread moved too fast-

I've had a lot of thinking about this nd going forward it will be better for anyone who wants to be a mentor to start their own thread. We'll need to talk to the mods about maybe having a mentoring sub-forum? Just do the threads don't clog everything else up. We'll still finish this trial just to be sure we've got the general format right.

But! the idea would be each mentor runs their own process however and whenever they like, so they could run it for three months or just one week if they wanted. This also means the mentors could go for it whenever they have free time, and trainees would have more opportunity's at different times (IE inksword having to go on a roadtrip wouldn't be an issue cause diff mentors would be running at diff times!)

So that will probably be the format this takes in the future : ) so don't worry if you missed it this time around.

AITE SO

Looks like It's nearly decision time Mentors!!! Some of you have already accepted some trainees, which is ace! I hope ur all getting connected and chatting with each other as a warm up ; )

THUS FAR it looks like
Hats: Wu and PaintedPaws,
and maybe Jiisuri: energy.

(Then there's possibly me: Shen and Skulls: me as time allows?) If anyone else wants to apply to Skulls, since I'm crazy busy so wont be taking much of her time, please go ahead!

We've still got some people interested in trainee-dom, who are as yet unclaimed by a mentor. If there is a mentor willing to take on INKSWORD, even though they do not have access to art materials for a short while, please let us know!

Same goes for DANSOME, who doesn't have a preference of mentor either, so any mentors without applicants should snap up these trainees, please!

I also agree. I'm just making comics through trial and error at this point, and guidance would be really helpful.

Hiii everyone!!

Since seeing so much vibe around this thread we're discussing running another go of this alongside a rumble roulette. Trainees will have to take part in the roulette and mentors will help guide them through the process.

We've still got a few of the ins and outs to discuss but please watch this space :)

I would love to hear more! Like what qualifies as a mentor and what qualifies as a trainee for example? :0c

First post updated as below:

MENTOR AND TRAINEE REVIVAL:
The purpose for this scheme is to have more confident members share their abilities and knowledge directly with members who want to level up their comic-making game. A mentor will take on a single trainee - every person teaches and learns differently, so each process will focus on being tailored to the needs of both teacher and student.
Mentors and Trainees get paired up based on what each individual expects from the process. Ultimately, Mentors are going to have the final say on who they take on as their Trainees, but Trainees can apply to the mentor of their choice. Each trainee will only be able to apply to one mentor at a time.
Once the process has started, you will be entered into a mentor/trainee-specific rumble roulette. This means both mentor and trainee with have a common goal to work towards. Only the trainee is formally entered into the tournament but - mentors: you will be expected to guide your trainee to victory!
After this, we’ll review the process and ask the participants to let us know how they got on with an open discussion in the thread, or an anonymous review for both mentors or trainees.

TIMINGS:
25 July to 8 August - mentor sign-ups
9 August to 16 August - trainee sign-ups
17 August - mentors must decide and announce any accepted trainees no later than this date. Mentors can formally accept trainees any time they like before this. Please post in this thread to confirm.
20 August - Roulette tournament starts (deadlines as follows):
1 week drawing time
1 week voting period
5 September - debrief and discussion in thread

MENTOR SIGN-UP APPLICATION FORM:
1-How much work you would expect to be doing: (Realistically, how much of your time can you offer them?)
2-How much work you would expect from your Trainee(s): (Will you be forcing them to work x amount of hours a day, or will you allow them to dictate the workflow?)
3-What you would like to see from your Trainee(s) when they apply: (to help you decide who to take on. Think about: their skill level?
how long have they been on Void? Do they have a character? Have they battled before?)
4- Your preferred method of communication with your Trainee(s): (Are PMS or discord the best way to contact you? If they're going to need a microphone or webcam to work with you, let them know!)
5- Do you have an area you consider your speciality?: (EG self-promotion, inking, writing, colouring, composition, time management
etc?)

I'll sign up as mentor

MENTOR SIGN-UP APPLICATION FORM:
1-How much work you would expect to be doing: (Realistically, how much of your time can you offer them?)
Its sort of up in the air since I'm job hunting but I'll try to add a couple hours a week, I can work with them to put together a schedule or we can wing it based on whose not too busy
2-How much work you would expect from your Trainee(s): (Will you be forcing them to work x amount of hours a day, or will you allow them to dictate the workflow?)
Depending on their level and what they want to improve at will have different levels of commitment, a couple hours a week should be alright
3-What you would like to see from your Trainee(s) when they apply: (to help you decide who to take on. Think about: their skill level?
how long have they been on Void? Do they have a character? Have they battled before?)
Preferably someone who has battled so I can get a sense of what they would need to be working on, any skill level
4- Your preferred method of communication with your Trainee(s): (Are PMS or discord the best way to contact you? If they're going to need a microphone or webcam to work with you, let them know!)
Discord, if we doin colouring a google hangout would be good, webcam not necessary
5- Do you have an area you consider your speciality?:
colouring, maybe story pacing

Since I just started a battle, I’m glad the timeframe for this is relatively long, as I’d love to participate. I’m honestly not sure if I’d make a better mentor or trainee though. Not to derail the thread, if anyone wants to discuss this, @ me on discord.

MENTOR SIGN-UP APPLICATION FORM:
1-How much work you would expect to be doing: (Realistically, how much of your time can you offer them?)
I will be available weekdays after 5pm Pacific Time, anytime on weekends, I'll put in as much as you can, and I'm happy to do redline drawovers.
2-How much work you would expect from your Trainee(s): (Will you be forcing them to work x amount of hours a day, or will you allow them to dictate the workflow?)
My trainee will likely dictate the workflow, but it's useful to set some sort of goal, which in this case would need to be daily, since it's 1 week deadlines. I'll be working on my own comic at the same time, so we can sort of keep each other going.
3-What you would like to see from your Trainee(s) when they apply: (to help you decide who to take on. Think about: their skill level?
how long have they been on Void? Do they have a character? Have they battled before?)

I don't care how long you've been here, or whether you've battled before, though familiarity with how the site works is a plus. Obviously, having a character is kind of a prerequisite, unless the ensuing tourney is to be an artist battle, in which case it's not a factor, and I'm happy to help with character ideas. Beyond that, I would prefer some general technical proficiency. We're working on the comics making process, not learning to draw. For that, Loomis is a far better teacher than I.
4- Your preferred method of communication with your Trainee(s): (Are PMS or discord the best way to contact you? If they're going to need a microphone or webcam to work with you, let them know!)
Discord is the best general method, but I'm all for skyping and whatnot if you're working traditionally or just hate typing or whatever.
5- Do you have an area you consider your speciality?: (EG self-promotion, inking, writing, colouring, composition, time management
etc?)

I think I give pretty good writing feedback, and I'm a good editor. Layout and composition are the hardest work of making any comic, but I have a pretty good eye for it. I will physically beat bad fonts and word balloons out of you. :3

Know what? I'm free to be a mentor.

1-How much work you would expect to be doing: (Realistically, how much of your time can you offer them?)
I am on almost all the time except when I am sleeping. That said, I am on a southeast asian timezone, so you might have to seek me at the late of night.

2-How much work you would expect from your Trainee(s): (Will you be forcing them to work x amount of hours a day, or will you allow them to dictate the workflow?)
The schedule depends on what kind of person you are. I'll be asking you how you intend to work on it, and I'll throw you deadlines for certain milestones based on it.

3-What you would like to see from your Trainee(s) when they apply: (to help you decide who to take on. Think about: their skill level? how long have they been on Void? Do they have a character? Have they battled before?)
The most important thing I want to see is the absolute willingness to better yourself and get this thing done to the end. I want to see this bear fruit. I'd also prefer that the person under me actually made sure they do indeed have time and energy to do this. If you currently have a day-job crunch period, or family matters to attend to, you really shouldn't be doing this right now.

4- Your preferred method of communication with your Trainee(s): (Are PMS or discord the best way to contact you? If they're going to need a microphone or webcam to work with you, let them know!)
Discord. I'm on the Entervoid server.

5- Do you have an area you consider your speciality?: (EG self-promotion, inking, writing, colouring, composition, time management
etc?)

Comic panel and dialogue pacing. I'm also an alright person to bounce story off of. Other than that, I can offer advice over pretty much anything and point out any major fixes to make.

MENTOR SIGN-UP APPLICATION FORM:
1-How much work you would expect to be doing: (Realistically, how much of your time can you offer them?)
few h a week! I would expect 3-4 updates per week

2-How much work you would expect from your Trainee(s): (Will you be forcing them to work x amount of hours a day, or will you allow them to dictate the workflow?)
however many hours it would take them to complete the stages of work (it would be different depending on how many pages they want to make!). I would more likely give them completion goals rather than timescale goals.

3-What you would like to see from your Trainee(s) when they apply: (to help you decide who to take on. Think about: their skill level? how long have they been on Void? Do they have a character? Have they battled before?)
have the basic comics skills and finished pages to prove them! I don't mind if they don't have a character or hadn't battled

4- Your preferred method of communication with your Trainee(s): (Are PMS or discord the best way to contact you? If they're going to need a microphone or webcam to work with you, let them know!)
email or discord PMs - can also arrange to video or voice chat if they would like that. :)

5- Do you have an area you consider your speciality?: (EG self-promotion, inking, writing, colouring, composition, time management
etc?)

Experimental forms are my favorite thing out there and silent comics and horror stuff (but this doesn't mean that if you ware interested in something else I will not be able to help you!). I deal with all aspects of creating in my own work so will be able to help with every stage. I have a masters in comics creating and currently doing a PhD,  so you are getting a pretty damn sweet deal :P For that reason I can also talk to you about comics theory if it's something that you are interested in, or recommend lots of other sources.

I hope I don't scare y'all away! Angieness mentored me YEARS ago and it was one of the best experiences I had on the site and I would love to give back! :)
