GO FOR BROKE! / InkyBrain's Sandbox
« on: Mar 09, 2021, 04:27 PM »
My little sandbox of Void-related (including potentials) art, designs, and characters.
*Made a new thread since I couldn't find my old one.

+ Lovechild 2021
Strigoi; tournament collab w/ Kubo
First on the chopping block, is a feature of the concept and design work I did for my collaboration with Kubo in the first round of Lovechild 2021.
Making up a series of varying designs for a multitude of monsters ended up being a lot more work than I anticipated. While I for some reason have much less issue drawing creatures than I do humanoid characters, developing unique monsters, all different with few reoccurring themes was a challenge. Nevertheless, I'm quite happy with what I was able to make in the given time. Though intending to have general design sketches for every single monster, I decided instead to focus what little design time there was on the primary beasts: Demon Strigoi, Curse-bite Monster Strigoi, and Reverse Curse Monster Todd.

Demon Strigoi: I wanted to keep this design relatively simple in theme, something that struck the viewer as immediately "demonic" without being too standard either. Blizzard's Diablo game series ended up being an huge inspiration for this design, most especially for the hulking form as to showcase some range in Strigoi's transformation abilities. The colored head there was supposed to be for Curse-bite Monster Strigoi, but I felt it seemed more standard demonic, and thus applied it to that design instead.

Curse-bite Monster Strigoi: Although having a general idea of how I wanted this design to look, I played around with a few different ideas. Ultimately going with a fleshy tentacle monster, I had considered pressing some religious themes with more mystifying headgear (which I inevitably gave instead to Todd). The idea was for Strigoi's transformation powers (from Wendigo) to combat with Todd's curse, while that underlying and unknown presence of Emmelia's DNA did its "magic." This resulted in a form which not only took Todd's power, but adapted it into an even more utilizable ability, while still retaining some feral nature and a passive need to make MORE. Eventually, I fleshed out the design with something that wasn't too terribly strenuous to draw in multiple panels, but still embodied those traits.

Reverse-Curse Monster Todd: Wanting Todd's monster form to reflect Strigoi's while not appearing too similar, I stuck to the long-bodied build and slapped on 8 more arms. I really enjoyed this look because it felt more symbolic in nature than Strigoi's monster hivemind feel. I had planned to showcase a continued ability to utilize demonic magic and sigils, but the time crunch required some cuts. The head in particular both Kubo and I were quite pleased with, giving him a sinister animal skull feel as a nod toward one of his pops: Gold. I also really wanted to incorporate Todd's curse into the design, with a subtle reflection of his caring nature - hands grown onto his face in perpetual disdain. I wish I'd managed to render that look a little more naturally, but time again became a looming factor.

All-in-all, had a lot of fun with these designs, and working with Kubo was an incredible experience - he's been one of my favorite Void artists for a very long time, so the pleasure was all mine!

Please sign Emmelia up as an entrant.
...Also yes, Ozias, but on the condition that he'd be unaware of being signed up, or unaware that this is a blind date signup. :B

And some other random shit, featuring some Void relevant beauties.

BUCK! --is not his son.

Satari

An old version of Emmelia, and what she'd look like if I still drew her like that today. lawl.

Tron-style Ozias, and what he'd look like today. Not too bad.

The lovely Kiteria~

My sweet bitey babe, as we know and love her today (sans the lopped off hair from a scarring match years ago)

And of course, gross duo~

Badger, I love love LOOOOOVE yours! Freakin' gorgeous!

Now for some not-so-anticipated Fremmy: THE LOVERS.

What it means to pull the Frank and Emmelia "The Lovers" Tarot Card:
Romance is complicated, there's no question. Sometimes we feel out of control of our feelings, and our heart runs away, leaving behind our sensibilities. Sometimes it's a good experience, sometimes it's bad. Love knows no bounds, and these lovers are particularly boundless.

When in Balance: Your love is fierce, so much so it may be frightening to others. Go along with it, embrace your partner and celebrate your wild passion and intimacy, and let others watch in envy. Your love is in balance, and that burning happiness is ecstasy.

When out of Balance: Dissatisfaction is lingering amongst you and your partner. Consider what you or they might be missing, and pursue new experiences together. Worst case scenario, your heart has run too far and your rational mind needs time to catch up. Detach, meditate, and rediscover parts of yourself. A truly loving partner will still be waiting when you return.

LET ME FIGHT 'IM.

I love just about everything on this character, and I actually disagree with the need to look "worn in" despite coming from a dystopia. Given he's a villain and even mentioned as sadistic, I'm immediately reminded of the intimidating soldiers of our own history, whose uniforms were often pristine and reflected the "perfection" those power forces liked to convey. It's intimidating, and seems to fit what you're going for very well. That being said, you could maybe do something unique with his hands to reflect that he is often prone to using them versus his actual weapons; maybe some attachments or corrections that almost distract from that well kept appearance.

My only beef is with the smile. I like to defend that people use what they're passionate about in designs regardless of how often it might be used, but I immediately thought this was a redesign of "The Smile" here on Void. He even has the extended eyes (although not diamonds) and the super curved smile. His build is also fairly similar. Maybe there's something you can edit to make him appear less like that character-- that being said, this is technically a preference thing, so I definitely encourage you to disregard this if you're quite happy with your character. Also, I'd love to see them fight!

Looking forward to seeing your intro and more of this guy!

Every day I'm strugglin'... But at least I'm still drawing! Just posting this here in case anyone is interested.
Commissions are open indefinitely - so long as I can keep the money coming in. Which means personal projects and VOID comics in between.
Feel free to save and share with anyone! Every little bit helps!

Kiiiiiiiinda wanna do something with this, but I'm not sure if the perspective is quite right. The weight of his stance seems off.
Also I'm totally posting this shamelessly for topless Ozias reasons.

I still wanna stay active on here in some way, and not just in the Discord chat, so I'm gonna try and post some art stuff, focusing namely on themes relevant to the characters I have submitted, and any I intend to submit (currently one).

This is a commission, and I feel like the luckiest person in the world, getting to include my own character -- the Ozias Krane.
Who is the lovely lady, you ask? Well that'd be spoilers. But I'm beyond excited to get to draw and make up armor. This is actually a contribution of sorts to my original universe that in some distant, perfect future, I'll turn into a comic.

Holy f-ing shit, I finished the roughs for Ozias's intro. On to to inking, and then I may actually do color. Who knows, maybe I'll have him ready by 2019! :P
But really though, hopefully in two weeks because I've got company visiting this week. Here's an obnoxiously sloppy couple'a panels!

I really like this design. Your comics are pretty great, so not worried on that front.

I hope you keep his submission name as Man Meat.

SORRY TO DISAPPOINT,
but I will not be doing that. LOL!

Here I am again, pretending that this go around will be the time I stick around for real. Ha ha ha...ha.
Anyway, a thousand years later I actually finished this character sheet. Its actual size is larger, so the text will be easier to read.
Thoughts on any tweaks before I move on to redoing/finishing the intro comic?

And for the thread's sake, here's some other character designs that may poke into Void comics for my own amusement, but will likely not be submitted.

From left to right:
Izhiphid, an enormous zombie queen whose pheromones both attract and control the undead.
Roz, an emotionless battle android and hyper computer; annoyingly intelligent.
Jo, technically the main character of my stories; a vastly powerful and evolving mutant/alien hybrid thing.
Odelia, your genuine wasteland queen; she runs a town of mutants both refugee and militant.

Not a whole lot of dudes, you see. But that's kind of part of the world.
