THE INCUBATOR / Re: Desichan's Characters
« on: Sep 21, 2017, 01:06 PM »
Sure.  We'd never reject a concept.  If you enjoy it then by all means go for it.  Id love to see an intro comic soon.

Design sheet is fine.  But before you're ready to submit it please make sure not to cut off the feet.  It's important that your opponent be able to get the full profile.  On to comics.

I generally enjoy these sorts of concepts.  So I'm interested.  Design sheet is good so far, hoping to see some pages soon.

Another pro tip: If a Buddhist monk shows you an amulet, it's not a souvenir for you to take.  Those dudes are fast and will chase you down.

The museum of natural history has these WEIRD rules about not touching exhibits...which really if they were so concerned theyd do a better job keeping them out of my reach...amirite?

Jobs / Commissions on Social Media!
« on: Jul 08, 2017, 07:11 AM »
Hey guys,
I'm sorry I'm not always on top of things.  I kinda didn't know this section existed.  So what I want to do is this.  I'm one of the people on staff who is primarily concerned with our social media output.  So from now on, if you put your commission info in this thread I will do my best to blast it on tumblr and facebook and get the word out.  It would also make it easier for me if you put it on a handy dandy infographic like many of you already do.  I notice the thread hasn't been used in awhile but I want to change that.  So I want to help signal boost your needs!  Just keep at it and I swear I'll try to do a better job of following along.  If you post and you haven't noticed it on social media for a few days please feel free to IM me and be like "Fuckin' Duel, where's my shit?"

Since stuff on this thread is pretty old, I'll put out newer info from this point forward.

« on: May 16, 2017, 12:15 PM »
I haven't read everybody's arguments yet but I want to say that the mods have discussed this on and off again.  It is certainly an eternal problem and ultimately I don't think there is a concrete solution to prevent all defaults ever.  Communication between artists can definitely let them cancel and plan ahead of time.  As someone with a spotty record and his own depression issues I understand.  But I think the big problem with serial defaulter is that it makes them less approachable.  Event participation is decided often enough on records and I dont think its a big surprise to say that people with better records are often chosen.  Mostly I just want to say it is a point of discussion and this is indeed a healthy discussion to have.  Just know that of our discussions a point that has been stressed is that people might get a warning beforehand if they continue that way.   No one is getting a surprise punishment.

I like it.  You have a good design sense.  It shows in Miwesa and in this character and I totally wanna battle you some day in the near future.  With names, my strategy would be to decide on a cultural heritage and look for a meaning that matches it.  (i.e. Usagi Tsukino, Japanese, literal meaning Rabbit of the Moon)  Or one of my favorites is to take names from popular myths or fiction (Cassandra, Ophelia, etc.)

Generally Void has always encouraged Show Don't Tell as a philosophy when making comics.  More often than not this will reflect in people's critiques and voting patterns.  We're working in a visual medium so it only makes sense that we as artists want to improve on our visual storytelling abilities.  So we've always encouraged Show Don't Tell around here.  But as someone who reads a shit ton of comics, I can definitely tell you there are comics out there that do the opposite on a regular basis.  There are super exposition heavy comics out there and many rely on it.  There are experimental comics out there that try to balance prose with comic storytelling.  I'm not gonna judge someone either who needs to squeeze in a little exposition for their story to have build up that you can't get through in a few pages on a deadline.  But I feel that while you're here in Void, you should always strive for Show Don't Tell because as you push yourself in that direction you will improve on your own skill and on your ability to tell a story visually.  It's a matter of honing your skills and always aiming for something higher.

The Outlawer The Vigilante

He was just a man going for a walk.  But then he was mugged for the money in his wallet.  And that was when the Outlawer was born, waging his one man war on crime.  Working out of his personal garage, the Outlawer builds big guns and high tech weaponry to aid him in his quest.  Using his rocket boots, he soars through the sky while dispensing explosive projectiles to destroy his foes.  His large shoulder pads are bulletproof and thus he is bulletproof.  All bullets will bounce off of his shoulder pads.  Beware evildoers!  You will be OUTLAWED.

Hey Dudes and Dudettes,
So we're about two weeks or less from my original deadline.  I hope there are people already working on their entries or still planning to.  If you need more time, we can work it out but I need to know.  So I'd like it if people who were planning on submitting would either post here or email me at WilliamDuel@gmail.com to tell me that you're doing an entry and an estimated page count and if you'll make it by the deadline or will need more time.  This project is near and dear to my heart so I'll do what it takes to make sure it succeeds.

Can I draw demons with dicks?

Like with your dick or other dicks?  That's a level of talent I'd be jealous of.

So I feel like I'm not doing a good enough job explaining what I am rejecting in terms of gore.  Like if you can pull off Bernie Wrightson levels of disgust and messed up then that's great, I love that

The stuff that I am actively avoiding is stuff that would be considered offensive.  Examples like Crossed.  Crossed is a comic series I hate and for the life of me I can't understand why it exists.  It is basically about Rape Zombies.  In one comic I had the misfortune of reading, the main character who is a serial killer amidst this rape zombie epidemic is casually stewing a woman's breast.  Do. Not. Want.  I don't want entries that could be considered torture porn, I don't want entries that are thinly veiled misogynist fantasies for dissecting women, I basically don't want ero guro for this.  All of that has it's fans and it's time and it's place but just not this book.

I also feel like me saying PG-13 is giving people the wrong idea.  There is a lot you can get away with there.  It just doesn't need to be explicit.

(It's late, will finish tomorrow)

Johnny Cool does not remember his past, nor his childhood nor his parents.  He doesn't remember because he was born yesterday.  Built with a patchwork body from various people and given mechanical arms, Johnny was simply born with innate knowledge and personality.  His genius creator is presumed missing or dead.  But Johnny isn't concerned about the past, but about defining his present and creating his future.  Using his gifts, he opened a small and modest private detective agency in order to make a living and to experience life by taking on any job no matter how big or small.  But on the side he must contend with a mysterious agency which seems to want to observe and capture him in order to figure out the secrets of his body.

His arms can become a hundred different gadgets or tools but many of them are unknown to Johnny to himself.  His arms seem to ignore the Law of Mass Conservation and he can create large and complex mechanisms.  He constantly wears his mask because it supplies him with environmental data and a link to his arms and their functions.  But he also wears it to hide his face which resembles a patchwork quilt just like his body which has various skin tones.  He's tougher and more durable than a normal person, presumably modified in order to support the weight and strain of his mechanical arms.  But he can still bleed and be hurt like a normal person.

Even though she's dead... ;;

Oh wow this is cool!  Thanks so much for the fanart!  I do still plan to tell more of her story in beyond battle format...if I get around to it.  It's still rattling around in the back of my head so hopefully someday I'll get to it.  But thanks again!  This is great.
