So let's talk about Dragon Ball

I don't know if I "get" Dragon Ball/ Dragon Ball Z/ etc.

Is it something that you had to watch/read when you were younger? I started reading the manga last year and really enjoyed it for a while, but then it began to get bogged down with interminable fights (the Tenchi Budokai stuff, over and over again) until that seemed to be all it was. I understand that shonen manga isn't, not should be, aimed at a 31 year old man, but with the new Dragon Ball thing cropping up I'm seeing a lot of people get excited about it. Is it nostalgia that's fuelling this? Or am I just too old to be interested in reading these fights over and over again?

I literally only know Dragonball through Dragonball Z Abridged and that's pretty hilarious.

I'd love to hear the opinion of someone who's actually a current Dragonball fan, but IMHO most of it is nostalgia. All the action and power ups are really fun when you're a kid, but there's definitely a feeling of not enough depth to the story from what I've seen as I've grown up. I still want to watch the new version myself, but I think that's mostly because I just enjoyed it as a kid and that's it.

A big part of it is all the nostalgia. But Dragonball/Dragonball Z came up with a lot of the things you see in modern anime/manga, so when you go back to it after everyone else has refined its formula it might not seem as exciting to a new fan. It's kind of the same thing as when you go back to watch old shows or movies or comics that established certain tropes/standards/techniques. At the time they were fantastic and ground breaking, but 30 years later it might not seem as good.

I agree with the nostalgia angle and with what Angie said about the 30 years later it may not be that great. I was first introduced to DBZ when it aired on Saturday mornings and weekday mornings with Pokemon, Sailor Moon, etc. and I loved it. Just recently I watched it through again with the original Ocean dub and I can't even believe how I watched it repeatedly when I was younger. I did enjoy the Battle of the Gods movie that came out a year or so ago though.

As to the forever long power-ups I remember reading somewhere that those were mostly to fill time because the original anime was being released in pretty quick succession after the manga and as a result the studio needed to stall for time/push the major plot points out longer. I don't know how true that is but I recall hearing that somewhere.

I'm kind of excited for the new anime and will probably watch it. I've heard decent things from other friends of mine who liked DBZ growing up so I figure why not. I also hear the limited release Resurrection F movie is pretty good.

But yeah, I totally agree with Angie on the not really holding up over time thing. I'm not sure which series/version you watched but the newer dubs seem to be a bit better/less ridiculous than the Ocean dub of old (if you're watching dubs and not sub).

I love the original Dragon Ball a lot, it is by far my favourite. I used to be more of a Dragon Ball Z kind of guy, but even then I only really liked that up to the end of Cell and then I was kinda done with it (even though I did watch it to the end). I used to absolutely hate Dragon Ball GT but I don't think I really gave it much of a chance, because now I kinda prefer it to Z which I know a few people will find blasphemous but whatever. The fact that Dragon Ball GT opened up with them actually looking for Dragon Balls as well as the fact that Goku's Super Saiyan 4 form actually utilizes the Saiyan monkey heritage is fucking rad. Battle of The Gods with it's lame GOKU WITH RED HAIR as the ultimate form was a letdown in comparison to me when stacked up against Red Monkey Man Goku.

I don't hate Z though, I just find it my least favourite. But I am excited to see more of Super, but I am gonna wait until it's dubbed. As far as anime goes the only one I am really keeping up with right now is NINJA SLAYER YEEEEEEART...but I might check out the Resurrection of F film whenever it releases outside of theaters.

As it stands though, having recently watched all of the original Dragon Ball it still stacks up well for me. I still enjoy it :)

Dragonball Z and Sailor Moon and others were on Toonami when I was in high school, and every day i would watch them, and the next day i would go talk about it with my friends at school, and soon some of the nerd boys figured out i was this goth chick who drew anime and loved Dragonball Z and they wanted to hang out with me, and thats the story of how I met my husband lol. we sat in jewelry class every day and talked about Pokemon and DBZ. we brought action figures and kept them in our work boxes lol. Fifteen years later we got married. So yeah its got a bit of a special place in my heart haha.
As for Dragonball I did not watch it as much, but they are doing a re-animate like the Sailor Moon re-animate, and I got a scene in it. I drew Bulma and Oolong.

I named my cat 'Goku' if that counts for anything.

(I don't really care for Dragon Ball Z but I love Dragon Ball)

I love the Dragonball series for the most part, GT was mostly forgetable and I grew up with Z over the original so it holds a special place in my heart

DBZ Abridged helped respark my love for the series

Battle of the Gods I loved alot, great humor, Beerus is a fantastic and fresh kind of villain for the series

yeah pretty much just love it all :| It's one of those guilty pleasures

Yeah defiantely the thing you have to recognize is that the series was made for a young audience and while it starts out with magic and adventure, the action scenes is what held it together for a lot of us when we were younger especially when there was a chance that Goku could lose in DB.
Also the soundtrack on the original is pretty dated but for the Latin-American audience it felt like a Kung Fu Soap Opera.

Bakuman, another Jump Manga, sorta touches on this eternal trend of Shounen Jump manga starting out one way only to end up becoming battle manga. (i.e. DB, YuYu Hakasho, Bleach, One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh, ect)
