Reviews / Re: So what comics are you reading?
« on: Jan 13, 2012, 05:05 PM »
i just read habibi too, but i'm not as sold on it... I got bored with the story a little more than half way through and sort of skimmed to the end, I don't know why... agreed on it being gorgeous, though...

Chunky Rice is still my favorite comic from him, at least in story :D

I went with Artist A.. the concept is simple, funny and done well... I'm attracted to the clean lines and flat color. One complaint is that the cape seems not very cloth-like; it kind of appears stiff like a shell or something.

Artist B is super nice, too... looks almost like a still from some anime-inspired cartoon... Poor eel(??)...

Artist C, good movement but I think it could be even more exaggerated... Something you could try is changing the perspective to have it look like he's moving out toward us.. Nice stuff, though

Oh my, I love all the entries! Thank you very much, mysterious mystery artists!

Artist C: Great pose! It suits him. It is also nice that the background is the galaxy he is supposed to be protecting. ..er, that is the milky way, I think? :o A very nice drawing, thank you!

Artist B: Great movement and lighting :o! There are lots of things to like about the picture, like the small cogwheel casting a shadow on galaxy cow's arm, and the other mechanical parts flying by... I am curious as to just what he is shooting at. A fun take on my character, thank you!

Artist A: This one is my favorite! It is perfect in every way. My one complaint is that it is not an actual LucasFilm game that I could play. And also that there is nothing in his inventory. What! But srysly, the style is perfectly suited. And I love the command center with the panels showing galaxies and different planets and stuff. That is my other complaint: I am jealous that I didn't come up with this myself. >:0

Bill Watterson .. for his gestures, facial expressions

R.Crumb

Art Spiegelman

Jaime Hernandez. for his ladies.

Mike Mignola

Jason.. clean line, understated actions/low-key-ness

I realised i can't think of any major lady artist influences... what does that mean? :o

I think you should sketch more lightly.. it looks like you are pressing pretty hard, which actually gives you less control... Don't kill the paper. D:

The inked drawing is nice... good lines on the figures. One gripe is that the boat looks flat, though.. I think the planks need to curve more, and maybe you could actually show a little bit of the other side of the boat in front.

I also thought Batman TDK made a good point about how it's easy to write for characters that have dimension... it brought to mind some recent issues i've been having and how it might be related to that, haha.

so, in the suicide wolf interview, you said that social contemporary philosophy was an influence to your comics.. could you kinda go into that? I don't know anything about contemporary philosophy(or any kind), could you explain a little about it and why it's an influence?..

is that a good question . -.

when you say mass do you mean weight or volume?

if weight, you will have trouble doing that here as the character seems to be floating.. His feet don't appear to be planted on a surface and he actually looks like he's tilted a bit.

If volume, lineweight can help a little with that, but mostly it's about contours. in this drawing you show contours in the joints of his knees and pelvis, his wrists, and the top of his head showing that his limbs/head are cylindrical.. so that communicates some volume. however, other places look a bit flat, such as his chest. perhaps you could work in some elements that will "wrap" around his torso in order to communicate that volume.

does that make sense? :/

lineweights are really a secondary thing.
