Our second book isn't even really a book, its a series of issues. Read as much or as little as you want!

Red Sonja (1977 run) by Frank Thorne (artist) and Roy Thomas (writer)

Read the first issue here, and click the drop-down box for more!

The Summary:
A series of one-shot adventure starring Red Sonja, She-Devil With A Sword.

The Goods
In short, it's pretty wild, and a far departure from what we see now-a-days. The compositions are all loosey goosey and constantly trying new things. The color palettes range from realistic to highly stylized. And overall it really knows the high-adventure pulpy tone it goes for and sticks the landing consistently.

In Summary
Whereas the last Book Club Comic, Seconds, was very grounded in realism with a touch of the supernatural; Red Sonja is absolutely the opposite. High-adventures, very surface-writing made to entertain and dazzle rather than examine the human condition. I picked it because its so removed from today's comic landscape: A very fun romp with little continuity and a lot of experimentation.

You can only read the first issue if you want, but there's 16 others if you're really feelin the poetry and tone of it all.

Also bump. In case anyone forgot.

This season, Karrin's got a handful of minor changes. New hair, more mature style. Can't be a party-kid forever. Not when ya got a town-within-a-city to run.

News & Events / enterVOID Book Club!
« on: Oct 22, 2017, 09:16 PM »
It's about time we had one! And as enterVOID's newest and firstest Official Comics Coach, it's my duty to get that ball rollin.

The premise is simple. Each month, I'll toss another book in here, explain a little bit about it; maybe toss in some things to look out for or things it does well.

This is becoming a thing because heck, we all make comics, but not all of us read comics. Or, at least, read a lot of comics. True, inspiration can come from anywhere, and a comic that only draws on comics for inspiration is a bit of a circlejerk, but ya'll gotta consume if you're gonna produce. And I'm gonna make sure that Consumption Junction is jam jacked with the good shit.

So without further ado, our first book,
Seconds, by Bryan Lee O'Malley

You can buy the book here on Amazon.

Or if you're broke, here's one that's hosted online fo' free.

The Summary:
Without giving too much away, it's a pretty cozy slice-of-life with a smattering of supernatural elements under it all.

The Goods
The big reason I'm recommending this and it's our first book is because it's very dialogue-heavy and panel-dense at times but actually never feels that way. It's a hard trick to pull off, but if you can pick up how O'Malley drafts his conversations and how each shot and panel is staged, you can really unlock the key to making a mundane conversation look super appealing. In this day and age of less-fighting more-friending, knowing how to keep us reading through the luls in action is an absolute must. But don't be mistaken, it's not all a talk-fest. There's plenty of action and supernatural craziness to spice up the inter-character drama. That being said, it's ultimately about people, their choices, and how they impact those around them.

In Summary
I'm not gonna quiz anyone afterward and I'm not gonna grill anyone who doesn't read each month's book. This is solely for your benefit and you can take it or leave it as you see fit. You're free to dip in and dip out as books catch and lose your interest.

That all being said, if you'd like to discuss what you liked, or didnt like, about a book and why, the community would appreciate it, and we'd all have another perspective to see from.

THE INCUBATOR / Re: Desichan's Characters
« on: Sep 24, 2017, 08:20 PM »
I'm gonna crit as I read to keep any advice and reactions pretty fresh, so here-a we go.

Pg1:
Alright, honestly, not a wonderful start. The wibbly wobbly lines don't really convey the sturdiness of a house or any structure really, unless it was made of play-doh or all melty n stuff. Which hey, it might be, but then you'd really have to underline that. And in the next panel---it's like night and day. Your character's all fine, smooth lines and clean edges. Man. If only the environment looked as crisp as this girl, you'd have a bonafide winner on your hands. It sorta makes me rethink the backgrounds as something you really tried to cut corners on, or just didnt care enough about to really put the time in. But, continuing on. Mom cracks an egg on a pan, I could use a bit more contrast between the panel itself and the border around it, otherwise it sorta reads like one giant panel, especially with the text balloon overlapping both.

Pg2:
Alright, new page our protagonist's at--a door? I assume door because of panel 2, but the closeness of panel 1 could really make it be anything. There's no defined door knob/handle, no doorframe, and no silhouette so really drive home *this is a door*. It continues into a panel of some kinda janky perspective with our protag sorta blown a bit to the right? But her silhouetes sorta cut off and she doesnt have a hand on the door anymore so the panel-to-panel actions sorta lost. Then she's...cut on the face with...oh its an axe. Or knife. This isn't good indeed. Originally I thought it was a sharp piece of paper because the knife's got no really defined edges or anything really spelling out KNIFE for me. I won't dock ya for the 'this isnt good' because its ambitious, even if its a bit confusing without a balloon tail or something. Then she slams the door---definitely look up some sound effects becuse that SLAM really doesn't sell the impact of a door slamming, and reads more like a note in a notebook, rather than the sound of wood-on-wood.

Pg 3.
Expression shot. Not bad, nothin really wrong with it. And then the last panel---I've got no real clue what's goin on or what it's supposed to represent.

Overall, I've really gleaned no insight on what your character's about, their stances, their possible quirks or powers, or anything really.

I'd tl;dr this whole dealio but I've found people tend to jump right to those and skip the Why aspect. I realize that a lot of this stuff sounds super negative and can be a whole lot to handle all at once, but that's absolutely not the way it's meant to be taken. I'd really love to see you improve and bang out a comic you're really proud of, and this just doesn't seem like that. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say you got real excited when ya saw everyone else's cool peeps and wanted to knock out a comic asap so you can join the fun. But! I digress. A second swing at this is absolutely in order, just really make sure to tell us who your character is and what she's all about.

We might wanna aim to make like an Itinerary Lite or at least a rough plan for stuff.

Museums close around 5:30, bookstores close between 8pm-10pm.

We might wanna filter in to a museum at around noonish, maybe a bit before noonish. Spend 4-5 hours in it. Grab somethin light to eat on the way to the bookstore. Shop-hop between the bookstores for another 2-3 hours. Then grab some dinner and vamoose.

Or at least that's my rough outline of the ideal Saturday.

I know there'll be some stragglers left over on Sunday, and, depending on the weather, I may or may not be there Sunday as well.

We might also wanna make a quickie discord server for the meetup and/or exchange cell numbers.

I am down for any and all pizza-ing.

And I will personally confirm the American Museum of Natural History and Metropolitan Museum Of Art both have "suggested" prices. As I spent many a day handing the poor clerk a $5 bill and holding my hand out for an entry pin. It's okay, they're used to it.

But also, lemme pitch to ya'll:

Kinokuniya
A super awesome home of manga and japanese goods. 3 Floors, top floor's manga, mid floors artbooks, basement is art supplies and lil shit.

The Strand
I think they're still considered the largest bookstore in the city? Point is, they're huge, have discounted books, and a large, large comics section.

Forbidden Planet
Literally right next to The Strand. One of the older comics shops that just moved to it's new location a stone's throw away from the original.

Punching up this list - though not sure I'm applicable. I have a script down already for the first part of a trilogy. I'd like to get my ass kicked and have a workshop to at least get it thumbnailed and started (It's about a 21 page Google doc so I don't expect to bootcamp the whole thing). It's part of what will be the biggest comic thing I've ever done before, just really too worried about how good the script is and too nervous about it still to get any art down on paper. Vs Invyn and Jasper was great but I think I need the CRUNCHTIME.

AYYYYYYY don't worry, you're totally applicable. Lemme know if ya had a time you wanted it out by and we can work ya into the schedule.

spit spat, time to chat / Re: Defaults
« on: May 18, 2017, 03:28 PM »
Pasting my idea from the discord so we got The Receipts:

"just have a little thing next to a users name and/or character just labelled
BATTLE READINESS

green is someone who hasnt defaulted/incompleted for the past 5 battles,
yellow is someone whose done one
orange could be 2
red could be 3"

Cause like, a traffic light is a universal symbol. Even if you're fresh to the site, and you see some people with greenlights next to their name, and some with red lights, you're gonna know Something's Up, and can take a deeper dive in.

Posted the student list!

Alouise is the newest to the site and newest to comics so they're goin first!

Then, its a tie between Syraxis and Pitafish, mostly depending on whose available when.

Then Rhimwill's right after that cause she's already awesome.

With the recent demand for More Bootcamps in the 'Defaults' thread, I thought now's the time to start my own (with Pyras's blessing).

So without furthur ado...

The long and short of it is basically:
I'm gonna teach you how I make comics.

After your battle or your BB is complete, you're free to hold on to everything you've learned and cherish it forever, or say "fuck that noise" and you do you. Ideally, you take what works for you and ditch what doesn't. Hell, most of my method is comprised of a buncha other methods smashed together. So no hard feelings there.

The only real requirement to sign up is that you gotta want it. Like, you gotta really want it. I've got no issue spending a lotta time with someone who can sit there and tell me they wanna do comics the rest of their life and wanna put in the effort. That's the ideal. If it's just some passing fancy and you wanna pick up some tips and tricks and finish your comic 'whenever', then this ain't the camp for you.

Here's gonna be the basic run-down for each student (And an overview of the process for any passersby):

We make a time table.
You tell me how long you wanna work on this and we'll start figuring it out from there. In a one-week battle, I'd advocate for: 1 day of scripting, 1 day of layouts, 2 days of lineart, 2 days of color, 1 day of wiggleroom.
Writing
I'll help you out with formatting your comic script. Comics are one of those weird mediums with no set format to their script. But in the scripting phase we won't be thinking in panels, just in pages. Worrying about the breakdown is the next step, so cluttering your mind with anything other than plot, pacing, and character dynamic would just be extraneous.
Layouts
Here's where we take that script and break it down. As long as you know where each page stops and starts in your script, you can allot exactly as much space as needed for your panels. Important panels are bigger, small actions and movements are smaller. At this time we'll also be thinking a lot about proportion and perspective. The more accurate and closer your layouts are to rough pencils, the less work you need to revise in the lineart stage. At this point we'll also be experimenting a lot with moving the camera around to get the most storytelling out of the least work. It's about working smart, not hard.
Lineart
With accurate-enough layouts, you can ink right over em and skip pencils entirely. Which is an incredible timesaver. But this would also be where any tightening of the layouts would be. Ideally, in this step, we'll delve into heavy shadows, aka "Spot blacks" and how they can direct the eye and aid composition in framing the important elements of a panel--while also blacking out the areas you don't want to, or, don't have time to draw. Work smart not hard, people.
Colors
Arguably, the easiest and most fun part. At first, we'll probably relegate it to one-color-per-scene, this way the reader can easily tell when we've moved the story, and the artist can focus on making all their color choices look good in relation to that One Color. Then we can delve into coloring your lineart to soften it up, the importance of soft-shading vs hard-shading. Stuff like that. Plus general polishing. The polish really can push something from really good, to really great when done right.

TL;DR
You want in? You gotta be serious about it. You're learning my method of makin comics good-n-fast and workin smart not hard.

People who really need the help will be picked first, with people I've got the most confidence in coming in later. I'll probably only take one student at a time but we'll see.

Right now its Tuesday, and I'll probably make my first choice of student on Thursday.

Student List (In Order Probably):
Alouise
Syraxis
Pitafish
Rhimwil
