GO FOR BROKE! / Re: AxeLord - Cleaving Art Trauma in the face

The proof is in the pudding. Guess I'm going to have to figure out how good I can make pudding.

GO FOR BROKE! / This WILL be the intro
« on: Sep 13, 2014, 01:48 PM »
Okay so I've been trying to find a groove to sit into that I enjoy. And after listening to Vcast and reconsidering how I view Max and how I need to present him to others these are the beginnings on what will be his intro comic (sans 3rd page).

I'm posting the raw illustrations in case some of you have input before I move on to inks.

GO FOR BROKE! / Not A Matter of Art

Observe

After giving an effort (note that I didn't say 'best') it has become increasingly clear that I really don't care for making comics. This is strange because I want to make comics. The process is dull to me. I believe that is due to the fact that I'm just leaping into something without really respecting what I'm trying to do. I've sketched, and illustrated traditionally for years now. And, for some reason, I deemed it a requirement to utilize a tool that I am unfamiliar with to produce 'completed' art with. An unreasonable standard. I'm very good at setting those. So I must determine whether I am going to learn how to use digital tools better, or stick to my guns. This will mean no color, and I don't use a lot of black. So I'm not sure how that will go.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

GO FOR BROKE! / Progress Report
« on: Jul 18, 2014, 01:39 AM »
Alright, here is page one of the Intro about half done. Much coloring/highlights need to be applied and adding some missed details here and there. It took me about 5 hours to get this far. I'm wondering what other voiders think of that. Probably way to slow but that is why I'm asking.

Just an update, my back decided to rebel against me and I lost about a week on my back in recovery. I have been drawing but I've fallen a bit behind. here are some sketches that I did for the random hero generator JAM that Wei started. They aren't finished enough to post there.

Thanks CrackingSkulls and Pineapple Pocky for taking a moment. It's true that I set a higher than necessary standard on these comics. I should try to find a mood that is just loose and fun to do. I'll see what I can come up with :D

GO FOR BROKE! / Starting on the Intro
« on: Jun 30, 2014, 06:39 PM »
Well I've started on the intro comic and I can't seem to get a good flow going. Nothing seems to come out right and that slows things down. I've hit these kind of ruts before. I cant' seem to nail down a style that I like and can produce consistently. Here is a progress image.

OK, so I've returned after 2 some-odd years to EnterVoid. To be honest I am rather hesitant to start back up. After entering the 2012 invitational I made some discoveries and learned some things. And now I'm dusting off my old character and going to try and make something of the commitment 2 years past.

I've revamped the character bios images and will be doing an intro comic. I could go on and on why I haven't posted anything or why I didn't follow through. That doesn't matter. What matters is progression. I want to progress. There are artist on here that I truly respect. And to be frank I am no where near what I want to be.

SO HERE COMES ROUND 2

Honestly what I'm looking at here is pretty solid. you've got a nice look going in this piece. If a comic were drawn in this style I would be compelled to read it. As for Critique, that depends on where you think you need to grow.

At a glance I would say that there isn't a consistent light source (a problem I have as well). It's all very vague in that sense. You may get a more gentle/softer look and feel if you varied some of your line weights, in the hair for example. Lastly, use your lines to convey the sense of an object. Here I'm looking at the tiara/crown. It feels like it should be finely crafted, the lines for that object alone feels to chaotic.

Again looking good, just my opinions, keep at it. :3

It's fine to plan big exciting comics, but set those big exciting comics as your goal for down the line. If you can't do 3 finished comic pages, you're not going to suddenly become awesome and crank out 30 pages in a week. But it's something that can definitely happen down the line. Know your limits, but keep in mind you can gradually increase those limits. Do a complete 3 pages comic this time, next time shoot for 4 pages, then 5 on the next battle, and so on. If you can't surpass 5 pages, keep working on it until you can.

It's fine to set a cool story as your goal down the line, but if you just got into Void or have never managed to finish a comic on the site, don't even think about a big lengthy back story for your character. Remember, no one cares about your character, who they are, where they've been, etc. until you make us like them through your comics, and I'm not going to like them if all I've seen from you are sketches and excuse pages. If you're the type that wants to do a big storyline for them, don't even start planning things until you know you can do it. Getting to do something exciting story wise for them can be a nice goal to work towards, so I definitely recommend not allowing yourself to overthink things until you'll be able to do it.

I can't even begin to thank you for this. The solutions to problems often stare us in the face and we don't look back.

With the invitational going on, I know I can't participate in this for a bit. But I am eager to put what I've learned here to practice.

New here? / Re: INTRODUCE YOURSELF
« on: Mar 19, 2012, 10:27 AM »
Well I've already signed up so may as well fall in. Names Mark, I live in the blessed USofA. I'm a graphic designer professionally. I illustrate on the side. Always had a knack for drawing, but I've never had the drive to really commit to anything. I love writing stories (that never get read), so sequential art seemed like a good step to head in. Failed at several OCTs, got better, but not quite where I wanna be. And now I'm here, hoping to give myself a good kick in the pants towards a more comic-y future.

Alright lets see if I can do this

Deviantart Account: http://ExemplarX3.deviantart.com

Max is a loner, having little interest at first glance in social contact. He strives to avoid it. However he is not incapable of it. Possessing a harsh mentality is a defense he's developed to keep himself distant, due to his low self esteem.

Max's powers are broad spectrum psionic abilities (i.e. Telekinetic, Telepathic, Pyrokenetic, Cryokenetic, Psychometabolic, etc...) boiling down to one generalized phrase. Mind over matter. Which is Max's power in a nut shell, not only can he do just about anything his mind can fathom (short of manipulating reality at a molecular level). The level of proficiency displayed is that of a seasoned master in the use of his powers. Though the origins of his abilities are shrouded in mystery with his own past.

Max has come to void to "lose himself" in a chaotic world.
