I was a guest at a con this past weekend and got to see a bunch of friends.

we had a Kigu party, I'm the cat of course.

the nicest fan on the planet knew I'm a big Fire Emblem fan and gave me a Lucina amiibo signed by her voice actress.

a bunch of us went to Cupcake ATM which is exactly what it sounds like. We were very sad to learn they sold out of cupcakes.

picture a friend took of the artist panel I was on. It was Katrina Hadley (storyboard artist on MLP), Ishi Rudell (animation director on MLP), Jenn Blake (penciller on the MLP comics), and me.

The site is moving insanely slow the past few days. I know it's not just me. It's making it hard to look at anything on the site.

News & Events / New Battle Type: Annihilation!
« on: Oct 10, 2015, 04:39 PM »
A year or two we cracked down on certain Month of the Dead matches by banning death matches against dead characters. These battles were banned because it was considered to be unfair as there was no risk to the dead character. But after much discussion, we figured out a way to make these kinds of battles possible by introducing a new battle type:

Enter ANNIHILATION battles!

This type of battle functions as a normal death match for living characters, but a dead character will be completely Annihilated from the site if they are to lose. What does it mean for your dead character to be Annihilated? The dead character will be never be able to be used competitively on the site ever again, or for any comics that will work in favor of your rankings and achievements. This includes Month of the Dead, Speed Resurrection Tournament, Beyond Battles, or any special events and battles where dead characters can otherwise participate. This is the highest stake match on the site and there is no going back. Are you hardcore enough to put everything on the line?!

So the character can't be used AT ALL??

The character can still appear as cameos in other comics, but cannot be used for any vs battles, nor can they be the star character of Beyond Battles. As Artist comics do not apply stats for rankings or achievements, your character can still be used for Artist comics.

BONUS: Death Scar Matches now allowed!

Scar matches will be allowed using dead characters as well under the appropriate battle conditions (Month of the Dead, Speed Resurrection, etc.). You cannot use these dead characters again until the scar has been added to your design sheet and implemented in your next pages.

I wonder if we should bring back the feature that keeps pages from uploading too big? I know before the limit was way too small, but I think 1000-1200 pixels wide max wouldn't be unreasonable. We've had a lot of comics uploaded recently that displayed at 3000 pixels wide and up when they weren't meant to be that large, so it's worth considering.

2nd-to-last call for anyone still on the fence!

By the way, am I the only one seeing a bunch of imgur broken links around this thread??

I think imgur got compromised at some point today? Any time an image from there popped up my antivirus blocked it. I'm sure it'll be fixed.

Jobs / Tool for Commission Pricing
« on: Sep 14, 2015, 11:55 AM »
Every now and then I get asked the best way to price your commissions. Well, there's a handy tool that's been floating around that should help you get a general idea of what to make your prices.

http://www.online-stopwatch.com/cash-clock/

Start the timer, and draw/ink/color something so you can get a general idea of how long/how much you should be charging. Do not under any circumstances charge prices that amount to you getting less than minimum wage per hour! You are worth more than that! I see so many amazing people online charging way below what they should, and it not only hurts the artist, but everyone else. By under charging, you give other people the impression that dirt cheap prices are the standard, and it robs the people that charge reasonable prices of work.

I get that there are always going to be people the charge way too little, and you may feel like you're charging too much. If someone is too cheap to pay for your work, they don't deserve you. So please use this tool to get a good idea of what your prices should look like!

People love fanart and cute stuff. The standard seems to be prints at most the cons I've done. And yeah, it is kind of hard to push original stuff, so you need to be a good sales person to pull it off. Most of the cons I table at I just sell all my comps from the books I work on, but I also sell some of my original creator owned books. My advice is you need to be able to explain your book or other original work in 1 sentence. ie I sell a cute book called "The Adorable Mini Adventures" and my pitch to people is always "It's a cute slice of life story about a woman and her monster girlfriend." People don't want the back story or anything, they just want the gist of what it's about.

Make sure to have small runs as there's nothing worst than spending a bunch printing a ton of books and having a bunch of boxes sitting in your house until the next con. It's better to sell out than have tons of left overs. How many exactly is up to you. Going from the size of the con I wouldn't do more than 50 of either book you're planning unless you intend on doing more cons in the near future. With this being your first con, you're testing the waters to see how many sales you can make.

For fanart you don't necessarily need to do what's big that year. If anything, you have more competition that way. I would just make fanart for something you personally like. There's bound to be fans of what you like out there and going to a bunch of tables that all have the same exact series and character everywhere is bland for me as a consumer.

I don't have anything terribly recent Void wise, but I do have some web comic stuff I've been slowly chipping away at. Before is from the intro, after is from the web comic.

I used to do a mentorship in the form of the boot camp

http://entervoid.com/index.php?topic=11708.0

but mine was specifically made with the intent on getting people better at meeting deadlines, so it was more hardcore. But if anyone wants to set up a similar mentor program, they're free to start a thread for it! If there's enough people that want to mentor people I can always set up a sub forum under Void U for it. Just remember that being a mentor requires a lot of commitment, so consider your schedule before taking it up. (I stopped boot camp because I've just been too busy)

The Welcome Wagon Tourney would definitely be the most beneficial to the community I think, so we should see if we can make that happen.
