@ Vanilla: Your comic felt very random to me, I felt like your character's personality and such didn't show through at all, probably because the interaction was so short. I also wasn't sure what was the rebellious behavior. I felt that your last comic was stronger content wise.
@ Runic: Your character is always entertaining and I like following the continued story. I did get a lot of the anime references. I didn't get the riceball/donut thing until you mentioned Pokemon. It's been so long and I watched that as a kid so discrepencies like that often fall into obscurity because as kids we really don't think about it very much. On some pages, there was a little too much anime stuff like with the arrows pointing to various things. I really liked the 2nd to last page with the whole watch subbed vs. dubbed, you really hit on the anime fandom with that one. XDD
Looking forward to seeing what you both will do in the future.

@william_duel well in my defense, I've been trying to play more on the aspect that she's trying to rebel from her squeaky-clean boring sidekick role- so she smokes, goes out with guys, kisses girls, etc. She's trying to not be anime-ish, but sometimes it just slips out. But I admit this tourney has been 100% not my best work, but I'm using it to experiment a bit and get a feel for what works with my comics- and all in a week's time! I'm sorry to hear it's not liked, but I'm really just trying to feel my way around.

Actually I did see Pokemon as a kid. Never saw anything about riceballs though, so it must not be in most of the episodes.

I however really enjoyed your side of the battle Runic, the references were not entirely lost on me and the Pokemon joke made me laughl. I think this was probably the strongest entry you had artwise in this fight, though I'd definitely attribute that more to the clean lines and solid colours rather than the style of colouring you had been using previously. The tones worked nicely for you. Style wise it was nice to see you really play up your opponents character by doing something you don't really do. Maybe pay a bit more attention to the BGs, the interior of the pub was nice, but then the outside could have used more detail. However what I do like is the way you handled the buildings in the BG with just solid colours. Some of the figures look a bit off here and there but I am going to pin that to being a bit uncomfortable with the style. I gave you the edge here.
Vanilla, I think whats here is alright, it didn't really make much sense to me though. I don't quite get what you were going for here. Maybe there was a reference in there somewhere I am just not getting, or the humour was lost on me but it didn't click with me. Art wise the characters looked alright enough, but there was practically no backgrounds at all in this comic whatsoever. Maybe would have been nice to see you more ambitious? Though I can definitely attest to the fact that a week is not that long to do stuff.

I'm going to admit I haven't liked Abura Oribu at all this tourney. Probably cuz the hipster thing just isn't my thing but mostly because the character is largely nonsensical. All of these comics have been this "look at me I'm wierd". Which is ok and all but it gets tiring and repetitive pretty quickly. Aside from that, the character's back history and concept aren't even used in the slightest. Vanilla could probably make a thousand characters and the comics might all be this. Who the character is doesn't matter and it's really just style over substance.

Thanks guys. I admit that these pages were difficult. And my attempt to fit the whole anime scheme of things was kind of lost. Not my familiar (or favorite) style.
The thing I learned in college but keep forgetting when doing comics. KISS. Keep It Simple, Stupid.

I guess Cherubas never saw Pokemon as a kid, which had the most obvious doughnut/riceball reference. Basically when anime was still new and shiny and on the rise, US localization didn't know what to make of the riceballs, so basically you had a lot of animes, especially Pokemon, calling the Japanese treats doughnuts, despite the fact that they don't look like any doughnuts that anybody might know of. Runic's humor in this comic is basically playing up the anime aspect of Abura's character and basically it's perception and references in the US fandom. Even the style was switched to a more anime centric style to reflect this. Which is why I said 'too much anime' earlier. I think in this respect, you lost out a bit to the theme Runic. Too many references that a lot of people might not get. Good effort though.

Vanilla - I really prefer your flat computer shading. The hatching added nice texture in some places, but just looked sloppy in others. But, yey ladie kisses?
Runic - I'm gonna echo Cherubas's comment on consistency, it was rocky. Abura specifically, and especially in the last few pages. I'll chalk it up to crushing deadlines. Just missing the thunder from your past entries.

I KNEW there was an explanation!
Vanilla, if there was a reference other than spontaneous girl on girl action, I missed it. Your art does have a manga-ish feel that, obviously, works with the character, but I'd still like to see the lines a little cleaner. A lot of your feathering looks like scribbles. Also, you might want to use some of the solid black that Abura's shirt and hair are getting in your background to give it a little more variance and um... Prettiness. I know, it's a joke for me to say anything about someone else's background. If anyone on this website remembers my name after I leave it will probably be because I was "that guy who always had the worst backgrounds" but just consider me an expert on what NOT to do then, and a background in a uniform line weight with no blacks is part of that, I think. If you tighten up your lines and stuff though, I think your style is going to really make you stand out as a competitor.
!!
Runic, I also missed your reference. I read the comments here, something about rice ball doughnuts, but when I first read it it seemed extremely weird to me that the one person of the group that I would expect to recognize something like that seems to be the one person who doesn't. I understand now, and I can see that you were playing to the audience that would understand the reference (believe me, all of my comics have been littered with references that probably won't be caught by everyone) but it would probably be wise to rely mostly on general stuff to avoid confusing dimwits like me. There was something really awesome about page 4, though I can't put my finger on what exactly... Maybe it was the bartender. Anyway, some of your character proportions were a little wonky and I think you'd benefit from a little more consistency in that department, but I felt your backgrounds were done very well. I felt as though I constantly knew where each character was in space. Not only that, but they all seemed to make the characters stand out a little and helped to direct my attention to the right places.
Overall, good job you two. I think it's always fun to see two wildly different spins on the same encounter.

She was actually asking if she wanted a Lightning Bar brand energy bar. She bought more than she could eat.

To be fair, it doesn't SAY "light". Maybe she's really generous and is going to give the girl a lighter.

@vanilla be sure to watch your continuity. Why would Ridley give your character a lit cigarette and then offer her a light? Every time I read your comic that part jumps out at me.

Vanilla- quaint and cute. My only gruff would be the cluster of textures came of kinda staticy.
I'm not exactly sure if VOID is key on continuation of previous stories. I'm use to doing that over at War for Arcadia.
But I hope you all enjoy these two comics!

Runic: I doubt many will get the reference I put there in the second page.

I got it. I find people being hung up about localisation of a children's show that aired ten years ago funnier than any of the stuff 4Kids actually did though.

It's encouraged! There may be a handful of people that don't like it but you're allowed to do whatever you want on Void.

I doubt many will get the reference I put there in the second page. If you'd like you find out just do a youtube search for pokemon donuts. 4kids hates rice balls.
It also helps if you know of my previous comics during this tournament to explain a few things.

Sorry that you could not go on as well. The gag about the owl still makes me chuckle. I will have to sketch Ridley chowing down on an owl!
