Crafty:  Much improved from your opening volley, I think it's safe to say you specialize in animals and your character is well suited to confront them. Lovely work for the most part, as an avid fan of the National Geographic I think you've captured the thrill of the hunt perfectly and your animalistic skills outshine the sapiens or proto sapiens as the case may be. Solid colors and nice environs make up for some loopy line work that could use some tightening. Altogether a cute little tale, I dig the angle of having Ehren act as protector and Elswer as a naive child. Can't wait to see more. Keep up the biology research!

Tof: I admire your willingness to be so experimental in materials, its exploratory and it shows. Hone those grey tones and inks. Perhaps finding a happy middle ground between your blanche whites and your too black center masses in the grey will improve your overall contrast. Your otter pops and fishy faces are endearing, but the story structure of a phone IM convo doesn't persist enough to be coherent. It feels like it needs another page or so to fill out the vignette.

J.Vandermeer: Not from Europe, huh? Specialized teeth would make him thylacoleo carnifex, but he's lacking the thumb claw!
*shoves glasses up bridge of nose*
Nyar.

EDIT: WAIT NO! THUMB CLAW PRESENT. Le durp.

I was going to say! I thought maybe I had made the thumb claw too subtle. I'm glad you were able to pick it - yes she's a Thylacoleo Carnifex, commonly known as the Marsupial Lion. c:

I enjoyed both of these. I agree with Con on yours, Crafty. This was a huge improvement from your first round. Keep it up!

Thanks for the feedback guys. And I really enjoyed your entry Tofu, I was laughing a lot. And you portreyed Els perfectly. C:

And also:
J.Vandermeer: MY HONOUR IS AT STAKE, HERE. I want to say the stalker is a member of the panthera family... panthera leo spelaea being my best guess. Look at the size of the beastie! He seems like quite a marsupial, on the other hand... but... his lack of dirk teeth...
Quote

Actually, you were on the right track with marsupial. I'm no expert on denistry, but I'm not even sure if this guy is supposed to have 'dirk teeth'. The animal's very peculiar tooth formations did leave scientists confused as to whether it was a carnivore or a herbivore (or both). They had rodent-like incisors, as well as flat, pionted teeth for shearing and tearing meat and small molars, if my memory serves me correctly. Its size may have been exaggerated in the comic, but it's no possum - it was incredibly muscular and preyed on megafauna, such as diprotodons and giant flat-faced kangaroos.
Also, seeing as Els is supposed to be from Ice Age Europe, she shouldn't ever even hear about this beast. But my fondness for the animal won over my obsession over correct information. And this is Void, I'm probably the only one who cares. XD
...
You're right. I AM a huge nerd.

Crafty, this was a huge quality boost from your first tournament round in my opinion and I really enjoyed it. I think the colour really helped define the characters from the background which is a problem that you had before but it doesn't reoccur here. Good stuff. I might take a bit more time to strengthen your line art or so make it blend a bit more with the colouring because right now it strikes me as a bit ragged.

Tofu, I agree with J's thoughts here. I really like how this character reads, but it's a bit jarring to see where the penwork ends and the inkwash or thicker pen begins, like where he has a lot of small details on his face and neck area but then the lines suddenly become very thick around the torso. The rush I can see, but it was still an enjoyable read for me. I like the light washes put on the fish and the faces and whatnot, I dig the traditional style.

Can't wait to see more guys.

Thanks for the feedback, J! The markerwork is actually ink washes--unfortunately, I couldn't get them as consistent as I wanted to.  Backgrounds were neglected due to me rushing the whole thing, which did hurt the rest of the entry in the end. I didn't think about slinging shadows underneath characters for some reason (uh oh!) so thank you for catching that!

As for commenting on the actual battles, I will say that the final panels of BOTH of your comics made me laugh out loud.

Tofu, your markers aren't as smooth as they could be. I'm don't know how to use the blasted things, myself, so kudos for tackling a tricky medium. You've already addressed this, but obviously the backgrounds are pretty sparse. Shadows, even, to suggest that character's aren't floating, would help greatly.
Ehren continues to be a loveable character and I adore the way you write him, and your recent flush of activity has me all atwitter. Keep it up!
That mackerel is huge. JUST HUGE. Size counts for something, I see.

Crafty: Your character has a dog for an erstwhile companion and so I am completely biased in my love for you. <3 In addition, you are a huge nerd, and that's rad. Way to collide worlds, girlie.
Again, you've already addressed most of what I could critique. Time management is a big deal. I would like to see you approach backgrounds as a part of your lineart stage, perhaps? You don't need to ink them, but I do think they should be considered earlier than your colouring stage.

Nice showing, folks. I WANT TO DUEL YOU BOTH.

Don't worry Tofu. I have to say, mine was pretty rushed too, but my only excuse is bad time-management skills. I think the whole comic suffered from that, especially the backgrounds, especially towards the end.
Despite that, the experience was enjoyable. It's been a while since I attempted a colour comic!
Anywho, I do hope for a next time. One day I would like to do a comic that isn't super-rushed. XD

On a slightly unrelated note, any paleo-nerds here? Can anyone identify the beasty terrorising innocent cavegirls and their pets? : D

Uploaded four days ahead of schedule due to the fact that I'll be at a convention for those four days--and I won't be near a scanner or the internet. I'm really sorry that this is super rushed, Crafty. Maybe next time.
